Description

When the same tool call reaches the daemon worker from multiple installation scopes, matching invocations now share one policy evaluation, activity record, telemetry emission and exact reply, including exit code, stdout and stderr. Requests with missing or invalid stable IDs evaluate independently; changed runtime or enforcement metadata invalidates reuse.

Fixes #58
Relates to #534
Relates to #621

Changes:

  • src/hooks/worker-server.ts: deduplicates by CLI, event, session, tool-use ID and runtime identity; duplicates release the registry queue while waiting, and failed or over-budget owners release waiters to fresh queued evaluation. Completed replies expire after ten minutes.
  • src/hooks/daemon-client.ts and src/hooks/worker-server.ts: share the existing 30,000 ms caller response budget. The pending-owner cap is derived by subtracting a named 10,000 ms fallback reserve, yielding 20,000 ms.
  • src/hooks/handler.ts and src/hooks/custom-hooks-loader.ts: establish reuse after config and source loading, include rewritten source graphs and enforcement state in identity, defer duplicate load telemetry, and preserve ordinary evaluation when identity cannot be established.
  • __tests__/hooks/worker-invocation-dedup.test.ts: 43 tests using real worker sockets, the policy evaluator and activity store, including exact replies, identity isolation, source/metadata invalidation, retry and queue progress, expiry, and a stalled-owner duplicate reply before 29,999 ms.
  • CHANGELOG.md: records the deduplication fix under the current release.

Validation: the focused dedup test file passed 43/43 tests at 0480e7e36bfa1b7776b3e993be33b2ba7b7d944f. Retained failing-first and mutation results show the new deadline assertion failing with all 42 other cases passing when the fallback reserve is absent, and the teardown cleanup assertion failing while the test's temp root is kept. Whole-branch review found no blocking issues; coverage opportunities remain for successful completion near the cap, late-owner/retry ownership, and varying the shared caller budget.

CI for this exact head passed all 26 jobs, including lint, typecheck, the unit matrix, build, e2e, Rust and SDK integration checks: CI. Supply Chain also passed. The full build and suites were not run locally during final review.

Known limitation: the reserve provides time for fallback evaluation; queue delays, loading and slow policies can still exhaust the caller budget. The deadline regression covers a stalled owner with normal deny fallback, rather than a universal end-to-end deadline guarantee.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Repeated worker requests with the same verified invocation and policy context now share evaluation results, activity records, and replies. Successful results are reused for up to 10 minutes.
    • Matching requests wait for an in-progress evaluation, then retry if it fails or takes too long.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Changes to policy or runtime context prevent reuse of an earlier result. Requests without a valid stable invocation ID continue to be evaluated independently.

📝 Walkthrough

The worker now coalesces hook evaluations with matching stable invocation identities. It verifies runtime and policy identity before reusing outcomes, shares replies for pending or completed invocations, and retries when an owner fails or does not complete. Calls without stable identifiers continue independently.

Changes: Worker invocation deduplication

Layer / File(s) Summary
Verify runtime identity for reuse
src/hooks/custom-hooks-loader.ts, src/hooks/handler.ts, __tests__/hooks/worker-invocation-dedup.test.ts
The loader records custom-hook source fingerprints and supports deferred load telemetry. Hook evaluation attempts reuse only when source fingerprints are defined and passes runtime and policy state to the reuse callback. Tests cover source-graph and enforcement-metadata changes, and fallback when fingerprinting fails.
Coordinate duplicate worker requests
src/hooks/worker-server.ts, src/hooks/daemon-client.ts, __tests__/hooks/worker-invocation-dedup.test.ts, CHANGELOG.md
The worker shares invocation results, releases the queue while duplicates wait, retries after an owner failure or timeout, and retains successful results for ten minutes. Tests cover request identity, replies, expiry, and recovery.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

For directly linked issue [#58], the worker deduplicates matching invocations across installation scopes. Matching requests share one policy evaluation, activity record, telemetry emission, and exact reply. Requests without valid stable IDs evaluate independently. Runtime and enforcement identity changes invalidate reuse. The focused tests cover duplicate records, telemetry, statistics-related outcomes, reply fidelity, identity isolation, retries, queue progress, and expiry. These changes address duplicate dashboard entries, inflated counts, duplicate telemetry, and repeated latency in [#58].

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The worker coordination, shared response budget, handler and loader identity tracking, integration tests, and changelog entry support the runtime deduplication objective in [#58]. No unrelated change is demonstrated by the supplied evidence. References to [#534] and [#621] do not add active directly linked coding requirements.

A rabbit watched requests arrive,
The matching calls shared one reply.
It checked each hook and policy,
Then let the waiting queue run free.
When owners failed, retries took flight,
And stable calls stayed cached just right.
