docs: replace bare except: with specific json.JSONDecodeError in example
Catching JSONDecodeError teaches best-practice and avoids masking unrelated errors.
Also returns line/column to aid debugging for users following the example.

Refs: #281

This keeps the example concise, uses a precise exception, and gives line/column context for faster debugging (without over-explaining). The snippet already imports json, so no extra import lines are needed. The example type-hints data: str with Pydantic, so TypeError isn’t expected; if they do want extra safety, we can widen to except (json.JSONDecodeError, TypeError) as e:.

📝 Walkthrough

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added a new example demonstrating a Data Processor node that accepts JSON input and supports Transform and Passthrough operations.
    • Shows structured JSON output with processed flags and clear success status.
    • Includes robust error handling with informative messages (including line/column) for invalid JSON and serialization failures.
    • Helps users understand expected inputs/outputs and how to configure and interpret results.

Walkthrough

Adds an Operation enum and a DataProcessorNode example to docs/docs/exosphere/Index; the node asynchronously parses JSON from inputs.data, handles JSONDecodeError with line/column info, processes TRANSFORM or PASSTHROUGH, and returns a JSON-encoded Outputs.result and status.

Changes

Cohort / File(s) Summary
Exosphere data processing node
docs/docs/exosphere/Index
Added Operation enum (TRANSFORM, PASSTHROUGH) and DataProcessorNode with nested Inputs/Outputs. Implemented async execute() that: parses inputs.data (JSON), logs and returns an error status with line/column on JSONDecodeError, constructs transform or passthrough result, serializes to JSON into Outputs.result, and returns success or error status.

I hop through fields of brackets bright,
I nibble errors late at night.
I shape the data, send it on,
Transform or pass — the work is done.
If JSON cracks, I warn with light. 🥕🐇

Title Check ✅ Passed The title “Issue #281 Fix JSON error handling” directly describes the main change of replacing a bare exception with a specific JSONDecodeError handler and aligns with the PR’s focus on improving JSON error handling in the docs example. It is concise, clear, and summarizes the primary intent without extraneous detail.
Description Check ✅ Passed The description clearly states that the pull request replaces a bare except: with a json.JSONDecodeError handler in the example, explains the rationale of teaching best practices, and notes the addition of line/column information for debugging, all of which directly match the changes in the documentation.

4-8: LGTM! Imports are complete and correct.

All necessary imports are present, including BaseNode from the correct package (exospherehost). The past review concerns about missing or incorrect imports have been properly addressed.

10-10: LGTM! Standard logging setup.

Using logging.getLogger(__name__) is the recommended pattern for module-level loggers.

12-15: LGTM! Well-structured enum.

The Operation enum correctly inherits from both str and Enum, making it compatible with Pydantic validation and JSON serialization. The docstring clearly documents the purpose.

20-27: LGTM! Well-defined Inputs model.

The Inputs model is properly structured with appropriate types. Using the Operation enum for the operation field ensures type safety and validation.

29-36: LGTM! Clear Outputs model.

The Outputs model is well-structured with clear documentation of the fields and their purposes.

41-49: Excellent! Specific exception handling achieves PR objective.

The code now catches json.JSONDecodeError specifically instead of using a bare except:, which is exactly what the PR aimed to fix. This prevents masking unrelated errors while providing helpful debugging information (line and column numbers) to users. The logging call with exc_info=True aids observability.

51-55: LGTM! Clear operation processing logic.

The enum comparison using is is correct, and the logic clearly differentiates between TRANSFORM and PASSTHROUGH operations.

58-65: LGTM! Proper serialization error handling.

Wrapping json.dumps in a try-except block prevents crashes from non-serializable objects. The error message is informative, and the exception is logged for debugging. This addresses the past review feedback appropriately.

67-67: LGTM! Clean success path.

The success case returns properly structured outputs with the serialized result and success status.

Summary of Changes

Hello @KatharinaJacoby, I'm Gemini Code Assist1! I'm currently reviewing this pull request and will post my feedback shortly. In the meantime, here's a summary to help you and other reviewers quickly get up to speed!

This pull request introduces a new documentation example that showcases best practices for handling JSON input within a DataProcessorNode. The example focuses on improving robustness by implementing safer JSON parsing with explicit error handling for JSONDecodeError, providing detailed feedback on parsing failures, and leveraging type-safe operations through Pydantic and Enums.

Highlights

  • New Documentation Example: A new Python code example for a DataProcessorNode has been added to the documentation, illustrating robust data processing.
  • Safer JSON Handling: The example now demonstrates best practices for JSON parsing by including a try-except json.JSONDecodeError block to gracefully handle invalid JSON input.
  • Detailed Error Reporting: Upon encountering a JSONDecodeError, the example logs a warning and returns a specific error message that includes the line and column number of the parsing failure, aiding in debugging.
  • Type-Safe Operations: The example utilizes Pydantic BaseModel for defining node inputs and outputs, and an Enum for supported operations, promoting type safety and clearer code structure.

Code Review

This pull request adds a helpful example to the documentation demonstrating robust JSON handling by catching json.JSONDecodeError. The example is clear and effectively shows how to provide useful error feedback. I've found one critical issue where a necessary import is missing, which would prevent the example code from running. I've included a suggestion to fix this. Otherwise, the changes look good.

9-12: LGTM!

The Operation enum is well-designed with the str mixin for JSON compatibility and clear value definitions.

14-24: LGTM!

The class structure and Inputs definition are well-designed with proper type annotations and clear documentation. Pydantic will enforce the Operation enum validation automatically.

26-33: LGTM!

The Outputs class is properly defined with appropriate string types for both the JSON result and status message.

35-46: Excellent error handling!

The JSON parsing error handling is robust with:

  • Specific exception catching
  • Logging with stack trace for observability
  • Safe attribute access with fallback values
  • Clear, actionable error messages

@KatharinaJacoby KatharinaJacoby changed the title Docs/jsondecodeerror example Issue #281 Fix JSON error handling Oct 1, 2025
This example shows how to implement a `DataProcessorNode` that validates its inputs with Pydantic models, parses JSON safely, and applies basic operations using an Enum for type safety. Errors such as malformed JSON or failed serialization are caught and reported with clear messages, while successful operations return consistent, JSON-encoded outputs.

Hey @KatharinaJacoby
Thanks for your PR, however I am unable to understand why we are adding this in index.

This issue was meant to be just change exceptional handling examples to handle specific exceptions in place of a global except statement.

haha- Sorry for going overboard. Do you want a PR with just the small fix:

try:
data = json.loads(self.inputs.data)
except json.JSONDecodeError as e:
return self.Outputs(
result="",
status=f"error: invalid json (line {e.lineno}, column {e.colno})"
)

or are you covered?

we should be good if all examples with except statement are changed to handle specific errors instead of global/all errors throughout the documentation.

We do not need to add a new example we can just add to except statements to already existing ones.

just to clarify - You'd like me to:
-Edit that one except: in docs/docs/index.md.
-Change it from the global form to the specific one for JSON parsing.

@KatharinaJacoby Yes, and any other except in docs.

I’ve updated the index.md example to use json.JSONDecodeError. While reviewing, I noticed there are ~36 other instances of except Exception: across the docs. Updating all of those looks like a larger, repo-wide sweep rather than a small example fix. To keep this PR focused, I’ve limited the change here to index.md. If a broader cleanup is desired, perhaps those files could be assigned to other contributors or tracked in a separate issue.
