feat(auth): let hosted MCP clients authorize with OAuth - #217
/mcp only accepted an x-api-key. That is fine for a client that can set a header, but not for the hosted clients that now drive MCP adoption: they read RFC 9728 metadata, discover an authorization server, and run authorization-code-with-PKCE. Without one they cannot connect at all, and the key path cannot be made to look like one.
What changed
/mcp now accepts a Bearer access token as a second credential, and both resolve to the same PublicApiCall (docs/adr/0024).
Authorization server: Better Auth's mcp() plugin, with jwt() (signing + /jwks) and cimd() (Client ID Metadata Documents). DCR is enabled too because current clients still use it.
Workspace at consent: postLogin.consentReferenceId answers the session's activeOrganizationId after a membership check; a member with several workspaces is sent to /oauth/select-workspace. The workspace rides the token as https://feeblo.com/workspace, and a token without it is refused, never defaulted.
Scopes: the Public API's own vocabulary. The token's scope claim maps through the same requirePublicApiScope a key is checked by, so a token and a key are refused by the same code.
Verification in @feeblo/auth: crosses the AuthHandler seam as claims-or-challenge, so @feeblo/domain still never imports Better Auth. The challenge is the provider's, so the 401 carries the resource_metadata pointer an MCP client follows.
No behavior change for keys: a missing credential keeps the documented MISSING_API_KEY body and gains the challenge header.
Budget: OAuth is charged per (member, workspace), not per token, so a client cannot mint tokens to multiply its allowance.
Discovery: apps/server forwards /.well-known/oauth-protected-resource[/mcp] and the issuer-inserted RFC 8414 path to the auth handler, which lives under /api/auth.
Consent UI: /oauth/consent defaults to the read scopes, renders the full advertised set when a client requests no scope, and refuses an empty acceptance (an empty scope would otherwise mean "grant everything").
Dependency bump
better-auth and @better-auth/api-key1.7.2 → 1.7.14; added @better-auth/mcp, @better-auth/cimd, @better-auth/oauth-provider at 1.7.14. The MCP plugin does not exist before 1.7.12 and peers on ^1.7.14.
The bump carries a forced migration: 1.7.0–1.7.2 required an account.issuer column that 1.7.3 stopped writing. Left NOT NULL, it rejects every sign-up. The migration drops the column and its compound index per the 1.7 upgrade guide.
Verification
pnpm check green (32/32).
packages/auth: 48 tests (new mcp-oauth.test.ts pins the resource URL against PUBLIC_API_MCP_PATH).
packages/domain: 1255 tests, including three new /mcp OAuth cases (handshake + tools/list, a scope-refused tool call, a grant with no workspace).
apps/server: 120 tests, including a new routers.test.ts that pins the discovery-path forwarding.
The full migration chain was applied to a fresh PGlite: 51/51 migrations, all seven oauth_* tables present, account.issuer gone.
Full pnpm test: one post-ui browser-provider flake (Chromium interception probe) under full-suite concurrency; it passes in isolation and is unrelated to this change.

Dependency addition / version change (approved up front)
Migration — irreversible in production; drops account.issuer
DCR is on — unauthenticated client registration. Mitigations: consent is never skipped, redirect URIs are exact-matched, the plugin rate-limits /oauth2/*, the MCP resource is the registration ceiling, and a registered client grants nothing until a member consents for a workspace.
Not in this PR
A connected-applications UI. Grants are revocable through /oauth2/revoke; access tokens are JWTs, so they live until expiry (1h by default) — recorded in the ADR.
Cleanup for abandoned DCR clients/consents. They reference the user, not the workspace, so they do not cascade with a workspace.
A real-JWT integration test for the verifier. The domain tests stub it; the verifier is exercised only end-to-end.
An end-to-end run against a real MCP client on a preview deployment.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
MCP clients can authenticate with an API key or an OAuth 2.1 access token.
OAuth sign-in includes workspace selection and a consent screen for reviewing requested permissions. Authorization requires an eligible workspace role and valid membership.
MCP clients can discover OAuth authorization details, and authentication errors include discovery information.
API keys and OAuth grants share Public API plan checks and rate limits; API keys remain required for other Public API endpoints.
Documentation
Updated MCP guides to explain OAuth sign-in, workspace selection, consent, and credential options.
The MCP surface only accepted an x-api-key, which is fine for a client
that can set a header but not for the hosted clients that now drive MCP
adoption: they read RFC 9728 metadata, discover an authorization server,
and run authorization-code-with-PKCE. Without one they cannot connect at
all, and the key path cannot be made to look like one.
`/mcp` now accepts a Bearer access token as a second credential, and both
resolve to the same PublicApiCall:
- Better Auth's `mcp()` plugin is the authorization server, with `jwt()`
(signing and /jwks) and `cimd()` for Client ID Metadata Documents. DCR
is enabled too, because current clients still use it; consent is never
skipped.
- The workspace is chosen at consent. `postLogin.consentReferenceId`
answers the session's `activeOrganizationId` after a membership check,
and a member with several workspaces is sent to /oauth/select-workspace.
The workspace rides the token as `https://feeblo.com/workspace`; a token
without it is refused, never defaulted.
- Scopes are the Public API's own vocabulary. The MCP gate maps the token's
scope claim through the same `requirePublicApiScope` a key is checked by,
so a token and a key are refused by the same code.
- Verification lives in `@feeblo/auth` and crosses the `AuthHandler` seam as
claims or a challenge; `@feeblo/domain` still never imports Better Auth.
The challenge is the provider's, so the 401 carries the `resource_metadata`
pointer an MCP client follows.
- A missing credential keeps the documented MISSING_API_KEY body and gains
that header, so existing key clients see no change.
- The OAuth budget is per (member, workspace) rather than per token: a
client could otherwise mint tokens to multiply its allowance.
Better Auth moves to 1.7.14, which is the first release with the MCP plugin
and the version its peers require. That bump makes the 1.7.0-1.7.2 required
`account.issuer` column unwritable, so the migration drops the column and
its compound index (the 1.7 upgrade guide), alongside the provider's
jwks/oauth_* tables.

Walkthrough
The MCP API now accepts API keys or OAuth bearer tokens. The change adds OAuth provider storage and configuration, workspace-bound token verification, shared scope, plan, and rate-limit checks, discovery routes, and web pages for workspace selection and consent.
Adds OAuth provider tables and migration changes, including removal of the account issuer column. Adds MCP token-verification types and an API-key-or-OAuth credential contract. API-key authentication delegates budget charging and plan enforcement to shared functions. Public API configuration now includes a normalized API URL.
OAuth provider and token verification packages/auth/..., pnpm-workspace.yaml, apps/server/src/app/layers.ts, apps/server/src/app/program.ts
Configures Better Auth OAuth, MCP, JWT, and CIMD plugins. The verifier checks token claims, workspace membership, and authorization role. Auth-handler setup receives the API URL.
The MCP middleware accepts API keys or bearer tokens, with API keys taking precedence when both are present. OAuth claims use the shared budget and plan checks. Rejected OAuth credentials receive challenge responses. Tests cover successful authorization, missing scopes, and token challenges.
Mounts three OAuth discovery paths on the auth handler and tests their routing. Adds workspace-selection and consent pages and registers the routes. Updates discovery content and documentation to describe both MCP credential types.

The stub verifier returns Verified for the registered token, so organizationId: "" reaches the downstream plan gate. That gate can also produce a 403. The status-only assertion does not prove that the real verifier rejected the missing workspace claim.
Add a direct test for the missing-workspace guard in packages/auth/src/mcp-oauth.test.ts. Alternatively, rename this test and assert the PLAN_REQUIRES_UPGRADE response if it is intended to cover the plan gate. The current auth tests do not detect a regression that allows a verified token without a workspace claim.

title | JWT
description | Authenticate users with JWT tokens in services that can't use the session
The JWT plugin provides endpoints to retrieve a JWT token and a JWKS endpoint to verify the token.
This plugin is not meant as a replacement for the session. It's meant to be used for services that require JWT tokens. If you're looking to use JWT tokens for authentication, check out the [Bearer Plugin](/docs/plugins/bearer). The JWT plugin's `/token` endpoint and `set-auth-jwt` header produce JWKS-verifiable JWTs for external services. They are separate from Better Auth's primary `session_token` cookie.
If you enable `session.cookieCache.strategy = "jwt"`, the `session_data` cookie still uses HS256 with your Better Auth secret by default. To make that cookie-cache JWT verifiable with the JWT plugin's JWKS too, set `sessionCookieCache: true` on `jwt()`.
## Installation
### Add the plugin to your **auth** config
````ts title="auth.ts"
import { betterAuth } from "better-auth"
})
```
`
## Usage
Once you've installed the plugin, you can start using the JWT & JWKS plugin to get the token and the JWKS through their respective endpoints.
## JWT
### Retrieve the token
There are multiple ways to retrieve JWT tokens:
1. Using the client plugin (recommended)
import { authClient } from "@/lib/auth-client"
const { data, error } = await authClient.token()
if (error) {
// handle error
}
if (data) {
const jwtToken = data.token
// Use this token for authenticated requests to external services
}
This is the recommended approach for client applications that need JWT tokens for external API authentication.
2. Using your session token
To get the token, call the `/token` endpoint. This will return the following:
{
"token": "ey..."
}
Make sure to include the token in the `Authorization` header of your requests if the `bearer` plugin is added in your auth configuration.
await fetch("/api/auth/token", {
"x": "bDHiLTt7u-VIU7rfmcltcFhaHKLVvWFy-_csKZARUEU",
"kty": "OKP",
"kid": "c5c7995d-0037-4553-8aee-b5b620b89b23"
}
]
}
#### Example using jose with remote JWKS
import { jwtVerify, createRemoteJWKSet } from 'jose'
async function validateToken(token: string) {
try {
const JWKS = createRemoteJWKSet(
new URL('http://localhost:3000/api/auth/jwks')
)
const { payload } = await jwtVerify(token, JWKS, {
issuer: 'http://localhost:3000', // Should match your JWT issuer, which is the BASE_URL
audience: 'http://localhost:3000', // Should match your JWT audience, which is the BASE_URL by default
})
return payload
} catch (error) {
console.error('Token validation failed:', error)
throw error
}
}
// Usage example
const token = 'your.jwt.token' // this is the token you get from the /api/auth/token endpoint
const payload = await validateToken(token)
#### Example with local JWKS
import { jwtVerify, createLocalJWKSet } from 'jose'
async function validateToken(token: string) {
try {
/**
* This is the JWKS that you get from the /api/auth/
* jwks endpoint
*/
const storedJWKS = {
keys: [{
//...
}]
};
const JWKS = createLocalJWKSet({
keys: storedJWKS.data?.keys!,
})
const { payload } = await jwtVerify(token, JWKS, {
issuer: 'http://localhost:3000', // Should match your JWT issuer, which is the BASE_URL
audience: 'http://localhost:3000', // Should match your JWT audience, which is the BASE_URL by default
})
return payload
} catch (error) {
console.error('Token validation failed:', error)
throw error
}
}
// Usage example
const token = 'your.jwt.token' // this is the token you get from the /api/auth/token endpoint
const payload = await validateToken(token)
### OAuth Provider Mode
If you are making your system oAuth compliant (such as when utilizing the OIDC or MCP plugins), you MUST disable the `/token` endpoint (oAuth equivalent `/oauth2/token`) and disable setting the jwt header (oAuth equivalent `/oauth2/userinfo`).
import { betterAuth } from "better-auth";
betterAuth({
disabledPaths: [
"/token",
],
plugins: [jwt({
disableSettingJwtHeader: true,
})]
})
### Remote JWKS Url
Disables the `/jwks` endpoint and uses this endpoint in any discovery such as OIDC.
Useful if your JWKS are not managed at `/jwks` or if your jwks are signed with a certificate and placed on your CDN.
NOTE: you MUST specify which asymmetric algorithm is used for signing.
jwt({
jwks: {
remoteUrl: "https://example.com/.well-known/jwks.json",
keyPairConfig: {
alg: 'ES256',
},
}
})
### Custom JWKS Path
By default, the JWKS endpoint is available at `/jwks`. You can customize this path using the `jwksPath` option.
This is useful when you need to:
* Follow OAuth 2.0/OIDC conventions (e.g., `/.well-known/jwks.json`)
* Match existing API conventions in your application
* Avoid path conflicts with other endpoints
Server Configuration:
jwt({
jwks: {
jwksPath: "/.well-known/jwks.json"
}
})
Client Configuration:
When using a custom `jwksPath` on the server, you MUST configure the client with the same path:
import { createAuthClient } from "better-auth/client"
import { jwtClient } from "better-auth/client/plugins"
export const authClient = createAuthClient({
plugins: [
jwtClient({
jwks: {
jwksPath: "/.well-known/jwks.json" // Must match server configuration
}
})
]
})
Then you can use the `jwks()` method as usual:
const { data, error } = await authClient.jwks()
if (data) {
// Use data.keys to verify JWT tokens
}
The `jwksPath` configured on the client **MUST** match the server configuration. If they don't match, the client will not be able to fetch the JWKS.
### Custom Signing
This is an advanced feature. Configuration outside of this plugin MUST be provided.
Implementers:
* `remoteUrl` must be defined if using the `sign` function. This shall store all active keys, not just the current one.
* If using localized approach, ensure server uses the latest private key when rotated. Depending on deployment, the server may need to be restarted.
* When using remote approach, verify the payload is unchanged after transit. Use integrity validation like CRC32 or SHA256 checks if available.
#### Localized Signing
jwt({
jwks: {
remoteUrl: "https://example.com/.well-known/jwks.json",
keyPairConfig: {
alg: 'EdDSA',
},
},
jwt: {
sign: async (jwtPayload: JWTPayload) => {
// this is pseudocode
return await new SignJWT(jwtPayload)
.setProtectedHeader({
alg: "EdDSA",
kid: process.env.currentKid,
typ: "JWT",
})
.sign(process.env.clientPrivateKey);
},
},
})
#### Remote Signing
Useful if you are using a remote Key Management Service such as Google KMS, Amazon KMS, or Azure Key Vault.
jwt({
jwks: {
remoteUrl: "https://example.com/.well-known/jwks.json",
keyPairConfig: {
alg: 'ES256',
},
},
jwt: {
sign: async (jwtPayload: JWTPayload) => {
// this is pseudocode
const headers = JSON.stringify({ kid: '123', alg: 'ES256', typ: 'JWT' })
const payload = JSON.stringify(jwtPayload)
const encodedHeaders = Buffer.from(headers).toString('base64url')
const encodedPayload = Buffer.from(payload).toString('base64url')
const hash = createHash('sha256')
const data = `${encodedHeaders}.${encodedPayload}`
hash.update(Buffer.from(data))
const digest = hash.digest()
const sig = await remoteSign(digest)
// integrityCheck(sig)
const jwt = `${data}.${sig}`
// verifyJwt(jwt)
return jwt
},
},
})
## Schema
The JWT plugin adds the following tables to the database:
### JWKS
Table Name: `jwks`
export const jwksTableFields = [ { name: "id", type: "string", description: "Unique identifier for each web key", isPrimaryKey: true, }, { name: "publicKey", type: "string", description: "The public part of the web key", }, { name: "privateKey", type: "string", description: "The private part of the web key", }, { name: "alg", type: "string", description: "The JWS algorithm this web key signs with", isOptional: true, }, { name: "crv", type: "string", description: "The elliptic curve this web key was generated on", isOptional: true, }, { name: "createdAt", type: "Date", description: "Timestamp of when the web key was created", }, { name: "expiresAt", type: "Date", description: "Timestamp of when the web key expires", isOptional: true, }, ];
You can customize the table name and fields for the `jwks` table. See the [Database concept documentation](/docs/concepts/database#custom-table-names) for more information on how to customize plugin schema.
## Options
### Session cookie cache
Set `sessionCookieCache` to `true` to sign JWT session cookie cache values with the plugin's locally managed keys. This requires `session.cookieCache.strategy` to be set to `"jwt"`.
jwt({
sessionCookieCache: true
})
### Algorithm of the Key Pair
The algorithm used for the generation of the key pair. The default is EdDSA with the Ed25519 curve. Below are the available options:
jwt({
jwks: {
keyPairConfig: {
alg: "EdDSA",
crv: "Ed25519"
}
}
})
#### EdDSA
* Default Curve: `Ed25519`
* Optional Property: `crv`
* Available options: `Ed25519`, `Ed448`
* Default: `Ed25519`
#### ES256
* No additional properties
#### RSA256
* Optional Property: `modulusLength`
* Expects a number
* Default: `2048`
#### PS256
* Optional Property: `modulusLength`
* Expects a number
* Default: `2048`
#### ECDH-ES
* Optional Property: `crv`
* Available options: `P-256`, `P-384`, `P-521`
* Default: `P-256`
#### ES512
* No additional properties
### Disable private key encryption
By default, the private key is encrypted using AES256 GCM. You can disable this by setting the `disablePrivateKeyEncryption` option to `true`.
For security reasons, it's recommended to keep the private key encrypted.
jwt({
jwks: {
disablePrivateKeyEncryption: true
}
})
### Key Rotation
You can enable key rotation by setting the `rotationInterval` option. This will automatically rotate the key pair at the specified interval.
The default value is `undefined` (disabled).
jwt({
jwks: {
rotationInterval: 60 * 60 * 24 * 30, // 30 days
gracePeriod: 60 * 60 * 24 * 30 // 30 days
}
})
* `rotationInterval`: The interval in seconds to rotate the key pair.
* `gracePeriod`: The period in seconds to keep the old key pair valid after rotation. This is useful to allow clients to verify tokens signed by the old key pair. The default value is 30 days.
### Modify JWT payload
By default the entire user object is added to the JWT payload. You can modify the payload by providing a function to the `definePayload` option.
jwt({
jwt: {
definePayload: ({user}) => {
return {
id: user.id,
email: user.email,
role: user.role
}
}
}
})
### Modify Issuer, Audience, Subject or Expiration time
If none is given, the `BASE_URL` is used as the issuer and the audience is set to the `BASE_URL`. The expiration time is set to 15 minutes.
Without a configured `baseURL`, direct `auth.api` calls have no issuer or audience to use, and the plugin logs a warning. Set `baseURL`, or set `issuer` and `audience` here.
jwt({
jwt: {
issuer: "https://example.com",
audience: "https://example.com",
expirationTime: "1h",
getSubject: (session) => {
// by default the subject is the user id
return session.user.email
}
}
})
### Custom Adapter
By default, the JWT plugin stores and retrieves JWKS from your database. You can provide a custom adapter to override this behavior, allowing you to store JWKS in alternative locations such as Redis, external services, or in-memory storage.
jwt({
adapter: {
getJwks: async (ctx) => {
// Custom implementation to get all JWKS
// This overrides the default database query
return await yourCustomStorage.getAllKeys()
},
createJwk: async (ctx, webKey) => {
// Custom implementation to create a new key
// This overrides the default database insert
return await yourCustomStorage.createKey(webKey)
}
}
})</excerpt>

A custom `jwt.sign` callback is rejected when its algorithm differs from `keyPairConfig.alg` during ID-token issuance. ... Better Auth now refuses HTTP redirects on the server-side OAuth requests it makes: token exchange, token refresh, client credentials, token introspection, and JWKS requests. ... Add the required `jwt()` plugin.
## MCP
### MCP moves to its own package
The MCP plugin moves from `better-auth` to `@better-auth/mcp` and uses `@better-auth/oauth-provider`.
What to do:
1. Install `@better-auth/mcp`, `@better-auth/cimd`, and the official version 2 MCP client or server package your application needs. Import MCP authorization and protected-request helpers from `@better-auth/mcp`. Replace the removed in-core client and adapters with `@modelcontextprotocol/client` or `@modelcontextprotocol/server`.
2. Add the required `jwt()` plugin. Compose `mcp()` with `cimd({ fetchClientMetadataResource, metadataProfile: "mcp-2026-07-28" })` for client registration.
3. Move options from `oidcConfig` to the top level of `mcp({ ... })`. Set one canonical HTTPS `resource`, such as `https://api.example.com/mcp`, and replace `resourceMetadataMappings` with that value.
4. Rename `withMcpAuth` to `requireMcpAuth` and `mcpHandler` to `createMcpProtectedRequestHandler`. Apply the protected-resource scope option changes.
5. Use the version 2 `createMcpHandler` with `legacy: "reject"`, wrap it with `requireMcpAuth`, and expose only `POST`. </excerpt>

## Remote MCP Server
`requireMcpAuth` verifies tokens against your Better Auth server's JWKS, so the MCP route can run anywhere as long as it can reach that JWKS URL. When the resource server runs separately from the authorization server, or uses a dynamic `baseURL`, use `createMcpProtectedRequestHandler` with explicit verification options instead of `requireMcpAuth`.
mcp-server.ts
`import { createMcpProtectedRequestHandler } from "@better-auth/mcp";
const handler = createMcpProtectedRequestHandler(
{
issuer: "https://auth.example.com",
audience: "https://api.example.com/mcp",
jwksUrl: "https://auth.example.com/api/auth/jwks",
},
async (request, accessTokenClaims) => {
// accessTokenClaims holds the verified access-token claims
return new Response(JSON.stringify({
jsonrpc: "2.0",
result: { sub: accessTokenClaims.sub },
id: 1
}))
}
)`
`createMcpProtectedRequestHandler` returns the same RFC 9728 `WWW-Authenticate` response for unauthenticated requests. Set `requiredScopes` in its options to require scopes; a token missing any of them receives the same `403` `insufficient_scope` challenge as `requireMcpAuth`. Set `challengeScopes` in the same options object to advertise a scope hint on unauthenticated challenges.</excerpt>

Node.js deployments can use the bundled transport shown above. Bun, Deno, Workers, and other runtimes must inject an equivalent transport that resolves each hostname once, rejects RFC 6890 special-use addresses, pins the approved address for the connection, and refuses redirects. The transport retrieves both the Client ID Metadata Document and discovery-owned resources such as `jwks_uri`. See the CIMD security boundary for the complete contract.
`mcp()` is the OAuth provider. Do not also register a separate `oauthProvider()` plugin in the same app.
Run the migration or generate the schema to add the necessary tables to the database.

`mcp()` also registers this identifier as a default client-registration resource. A dynamically registered client is linked to the MCP resource even when its registration request omits the non-standard `resources` field. Any `clientRegistrationDefaultResources` you provide are preserved, and the MCP resource is appended once.
If you implement `subscriptions/listen` across multiple server instances, provide the SDK with a shared event bus for that extension. OAuth clients, consent, authorization codes, refresh tokens, CIMD metadata, and DPoP replay detection still use durable state because they are authorization and security records, not MCP transport sessions.
`requireMcpAuth` reads the `Authorization` header, verifies access tokens against the authorization server's JSON Web Key Set (JWKS), and checks the signature, issuer, audience, and expiry. It also enforces RFC 9449 Demonstrating Proof of Possession (DPoP) when an access token is DPoP-bound. Unauthenticated requests receive a JSON-RPC `401` with the RFC 9728 `WWW-Authenticate` header, so MCP clients can start the authorization flow. Tokens missing a required scope receive a `403` with an RFC 6750 `insufficient_scope` challenge, which MCP clients use to step up their authorization.
The wrapper passes the verified access-token claims as a second callback argument, not as a database record. Set 0 on MCP to disable the overlap window.", type: "number", default: 30, }, codeExpiresIn: { description: "Lifetime of authorization codes in seconds.", type: "number", default: 600, }, }
## Remote MCP Server
`requireMcpAuth` verifies tokens against your Better Auth server's JWKS, so the MCP route can run anywhere as long as it can reach that JWKS URL. When the resource server runs separately from the authorization server, or uses a dynamic `baseURL`, use `createMcpProtectedRequestHandler` with explicit verification options instead of `requireMcpAuth`.
import { createMcpProtectedRequestHandler } from "@better-auth/mcp"; // [!code highlight]
const handler = createMcpProtectedRequestHandler( // [!code highlight]
{
issuer: "https://auth.example.com",
audience: "https://api.example.com/mcp",
jwksUrl: "https://auth.example.com/api/auth/jwks",
},
async (request, accessTokenClaims) => { // [!code highlight]
// accessTokenClaims holds the verified access-token claims // [!code highlight]
return new Response(JSON.stringify({
jsonrpc: "2.0",
result: { sub: accessTokenClaims.sub },
id: 1
}))
}
)

Point jwksUrl at the Better Auth JWKS endpoint.
apiUrl is configured as Better Auth's baseURL, while the default JWKS endpoint is under the auth base path. ${baseURL}/jwks can miss /api/auth and cause valid MCP tokens to be rejected. Keep issuer: baseURL; only correct the JWKS URL.

Review of #217 found that `consentReferenceId` checked membership only, so
any member could authorize an OAuth client and grant themselves scopes their
own role does not hold — `companies.delete` for a contributor — and then
call `/mcp` with the token. An OAuth grant is a workspace-wide machine
credential, so it now uses the authority that governs the other one:
- `roleMayAuthorizeWorkspaceCredential` derives the allowed roles from the
same ACL statement the api-key plugin checks on `/api-key/create`
(`apiKey: ["create"]`, owner and admin).
- The consent's workspace reference requires that role, and
`verifyMcpAccessToken` re-checks the member's role on every request, so a
demotion stops an existing grant.
- The workspace chooser filters to workspaces where the member holds it,
instead of offering a choice the server would refuse.
Also from the same review:
- `/mcp` now resolves the relative request URL against `API_URL` (added to
`PublicApiConfig`) before handing it to the token verifier; a DPoP `htu`
must be absolute.
- A verifier that throws (database or JWKS fault) is logged and answered as
`INTERNAL_ERROR` instead of escaping as an unlabeled defect.
- The consent page shows the requested OIDC scopes and lets the member
decline them, so only approved scopes are granted.
- `auth.md` and the MCP server card describe both credentials; the
disconnect instructions point at `/oauth2/revoke` and say an issued access
token lives until it expires, instead of a page that does not exist.
- `docs/public-api.md` separates refusals that answer the `/api/v1`
envelope from a rejected OAuth token, which answers a JSON-RPC error with
`WWW-Authenticate`.
- The workspace-claim guard is now tested through `parseAccessTokenClaims`,
the function the real verifier uses, instead of a stub that never reached
it.
The `jwksUrl` review finding does not hold: Better Auth's resolved
`baseURL` includes its `/api/auth` base path, so `${baseURL}/jwks` is the
mounted endpoint. A comment now says so.
Pushed 78fb2158 with the still-valid findings. Per finding:
Member could exceed their permissions — fixed. consentReferenceId now requires the same ACL statement the api-key plugin checks on /api-key/create (apiKey: ["create"]: owner/admin), and verifyMcpAccessToken re-checks the member's role on every request, so a demotion stops an existing grant. The workspace chooser filters to workspaces where the member holds it. roleMayAuthorizeWorkspaceCredential is derived from the ACL itself, not a second role list.
Verifier failure escaped as a defect — fixed. Effect.exit around the call: a throw is logged and answered as INTERNAL_ERROR instead of an unlabeled 500.
Relative request URL — fixed. PublicApiConfig now carries apiUrl, and the middleware resolves request.url against it before verification (a DPoP htu must be absolute). Covered by the existing route tests.
Consent hid the OIDC scopes — fixed. email, profile, and offline_access are shown and individually selectable, and only the approved set is sent.
/mcp refusals documented as the HTTP envelope — fixed in docs/public-api.md and auth.md: refusals after a credential resolves use the envelope; a rejected OAuth token answers a JSON-RPC error with WWW-Authenticate.
auth.md / server card said “API key only”, disconnect pointed at a page that does not exist — fixed. Both credentials are described, and disconnect is /api/auth/oauth2/revoke with the note that an issued access token lives until it expires.
jwksUrl under the auth base path — not changed; the finding does not hold. Better Auth's resolved baseURL is getBaseURL(API_URL, basePath) and therefore already includes /api/auth, so ${baseURL}/jwks is the mounted endpoint. Added a comment so this is not “fixed” later.
Workspace-claim test passed for the wrong reason — fixed. The guard is now parseAccessTokenClaims, which the real verifier uses, and it is tested directly (missing/empty workspace, missing subject, azp vs client_id). The misleading stub-based test was replaced with one that pins the middleware's actual contract: an unknown token gets a JSON-RPC 401 with the discovery header.

Eligible workspaces disappear
Members with multiple roles, such as contributor,admin, cannot select their workspace here even though the server allows them to authorize a client. roleGrants looks up the whole string in ROLE_RANK, so it returns false for comma-separated roles. The chooser hides the workspace and blocks the connection.
Split the stored roles before checking permissions, matching roleMayAuthorizeWorkspaceCredential.
Checked these four against the branch (and against origin/main); all four point at code that is not in this repository, so nothing was changed.
remotes in the server card (agent-discovery.ts:426-431). There is no remotes key anywhere in the tree — mcpServerCard uses servers, and its authentication object already declares the header as required ({ required: true, scheme: "x-api-key" }) with no value. The file is 453 lines, so the cited range is the router factory, not a card literal.
Wildcard CORS for discovery + If-None-Match (agent-discovery.ts:643-648). The file has no line 643, and If-None-Match does not appear in the repository. Discovery routes intentionally run through the single global makeIsAllowedOrigin predicate, and discoveryResponse sets Cache-Control: no-store, so there is no 304 path and no route-local origin policy to widen. Loosening it would only weaken CORS for no stated benefit.
Case-insensitive Accept parameter in apps/web/src/lib/agent-discovery.ts:304. That file does not exist, on this branch or on main. There is no Accept-header parser in the repo; the only q token is an HTML attribute allowlist in packages/utils/src/html-sanitizer.ts.
DASHBOARD_AGENT_CATALOG_PATH / application/ai-catalog+json in apps/web/src/routes/[.]well-known.$.ts:60. Neither the route file nor the constant nor the media type exists. Discovery is served by apps/server (.well-known/mcp.json, .well-known/api-catalog), not by the dashboard app.
No code changed; the branch is still at 78fb2158, working tree clean, and pnpm check was green on that commit.
Brings in #218 (agent-ready API and dashboard) and #220 (changelog editor
remount). Two conflicts:
- `apps/server/src/http/agent-discovery.ts` — main renamed the `auth.md`
document's title and reworded its opening line; the merge keeps main's
title and the branch's two-credential framing, since the MCP surface no
longer accepts only a key.
- `apps/web/src/routeTree.gen.ts` — regenerated rather than hand-merged, so
main's new routes (`auth.md`, `sitemap.xml`, `.well-known/*`) and this
branch's `/oauth/{consent,select-workspace}` are both present.
The four findings from the last review round are satisfied by this merge
rather than by a change here: main's SEP-1649 card already declares the key
header as `isRequired`/`isSecret` in `remotes`, `makeHttpCorsMiddleware`
already answers a wildcard preflight (including `If-None-Match`) for the
public discovery paths only, the Accept parser already lowercases parameter
names, and the dashboard catalog already serves
`application/ai-catalog+json`.
Merged origin/main (84810e71) as 6670c903; main is now an ancestor and the PR is mergeable again.
That resolves the four findings from the last round, which had been written against #218 while it was still in flight. I re-checked each on the merged tree — no change was needed in this PR:
remotes secret header — mcpServerCardDocument().remotes[0].headers already declares { name: PUBLIC_API_KEY_HEADER, isRequired: true, isSecret: true } and states the value is created in the dashboard and never published (agent-discovery.ts:464-470).
Discovery preflight — makeHttpCorsMiddleware answers OPTIONS on isPublicDiscoveryPath with access-control-allow-origin: * and access-control-allow-headers: Content-Type, If-None-Match, and every other route still goes through makeIsAllowedOrigin (router.ts:207-236).
Q=0 — the Accept parser lowercases each parameter before the q= lookup (Apps/web/src/lib/agent-discovery.ts:311-315).
Catalog content type — DASHBOARD_AGENT_CATALOG_PATH already serves application/ai-catalog+json and keeps Access-Control-Allow-Origin: * ([.]well-known.$.ts:59-64).
Merge resolution, for review:
agent-discovery.ts: kept main's # Feeblo auth.md title and opening sentence, with this branch's two-credential framing (the surface no longer accepts only a key).
routeTree.gen.ts: regenerated, not hand-merged, so main's new routes and /oauth/{consent,select-workspace} are both present.
pnpm check green after the merge; auth 57, server 129, web 134, domain public-api 206 tests pass. CI is running on 6670c903.

identified by their surrounding text: specify that API keys apply to `/api/v1`
requests and that `/mcp` can use an OAuth access token, and clarify that `/mcp`
OAuth grants are budgeted per member and workspace. Leave the accurate statement
near line 996 unchanged.

`POST /mcp` accepts two credentials, and both resolve to one `PublicApiCall`:
- **`x-api-key`** — unchanged. `authenticatePublicApiKey` verifies the key, charges its per-key budget, and applies the plan gate (ADR 0008).
- **`Authorization: Bearer <jwt>`** — an OAuth 2.1 access token issued by this deployment acting as its own authorization server. `authenticateMcpAccessToken` verifies the token against the deployment's JWKS, charges a per-(member, workspace) budget, applies the same plan gate, and maps the token's `scope` claim to the same `PublicApiScopeStatements` the key path produces.

Align the ADR with the implemented names and responsibilities.
Line 38 says the credential discriminant is OAuth. authenticateMcpAccessToken in packages/domain/src/public-api/oauth-auth.ts returns _tag: "OAuthGrant". Use OAuthGrant.
Line 8 says authenticateMcpAccessToken verifies the token against the JWKS. That function only charges the budget, applies the plan gate, and maps scopes. The auth seam (verifyMcpAccessToken in packages/auth) verifies the token, as line 30 says. Move the verification claim to that description.

A route loader and the dashboard layout run while the browser URL still names the post being left. The slug-scoped collection accessors read window.location, so a preload or layout could build a source-scoped collection and then subscribe to it with the destination post's filters. The comment list then fetched the right rows into the wrong collection, which left a merged comment invisible on the survivor.
Name the scope explicitly for post detail preloads and the dashboard layout, and reuse the same factory for the global accessor.
The ADR attributed JWT verification to authenticateMcpAccessToken and named the credential tag OAuth, but verification lives in verifyMcpAccessToken and the tag is OAuthGrant. The public API guide also described every request as key-authenticated and every budget as per-key, which is false for /mcp OAuth grants.
Qualify the key statements, document the OAuth alternative for /mcp, and describe OAuth budgets as per member and workspace.

Why
/mcponly accepted anx-api-key. That is fine for a client that can set a header, but not for the hosted clients that now drive MCP adoption: they read RFC 9728 metadata, discover an authorization server, and run authorization-code-with-PKCE. Without one they cannot connect at all, and the key path cannot be made to look like one.What changed
/mcpnow accepts a Bearer access token as a second credential, and both resolve to the samePublicApiCall(docs/adr/0024).mcp()plugin, withjwt()(signing +/jwks) andcimd()(Client ID Metadata Documents). DCR is enabled too because current clients still use it.postLogin.consentReferenceIdanswers the session'sactiveOrganizationIdafter a membership check; a member with several workspaces is sent to/oauth/select-workspace. The workspace rides the token ashttps://feeblo.com/workspace, and a token without it is refused, never defaulted.scopeclaim maps through the samerequirePublicApiScopea key is checked by, so a token and a key are refused by the same code.@feeblo/auth: crosses theAuthHandlerseam as claims-or-challenge, so@feeblo/domainstill never imports Better Auth. The challenge is the provider's, so the 401 carries theresource_metadatapointer an MCP client follows.MISSING_API_KEYbody and gains the challenge header.apps/serverforwards/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource[/mcp]and the issuer-inserted RFC 8414 path to the auth handler, which lives under/api/auth./oauth/consentdefaults to the read scopes, renders the full advertised set when a client requests no scope, and refuses an empty acceptance (an emptyscopewould otherwise mean "grant everything").Dependency bump
