The pair moves together — the query adapter peers on @tanstack/db ^1.0.0-rc.0, so bumping one alone resolves two copies of the DB core. They are pinned to exact versions rather than carets because rc.1 is a release candidate, and both are named in minimumReleaseAgeExclude with the reason inline since rc.1 is hours old.
@tanstack/react-router-with-db is removed rather than bumped — see the last section. Verified one resolved copy of @tanstack/db in the lockfile, so the dev-mode DuplicateDbInstanceError check stays quiet.
Two changes are silent at the type level
Both compile clean and would have shipped as data loss.
1. The Query Collection no longer refetches after a mutation handler
Commit drops the optimistic layer and the Query cache wins. A handler that only awaits its RPC therefore reverts the row to its pre-write value once the transaction settles — the server accepted the write and the UI undoes it. Nothing in the types says so.
I confirmed the failure against the real adapter rather than trusting the guide:
handler does NOT refetch: before → optimistic "after" → settled "before" (server holds "after")
handler DOES await refetch: before → optimistic "after" → settled "after"
1.4.8 did this read-back implicitly via refetchQueryResults(undefined, false), which does not throw. So each handler now ends with an awaited collection.utils.refetch() — same round trip count as before, same non-throwing error semantics.
69/69 handlers in the two collections modules now read back, audited programmatically rather than by hand.
Three already did it explicitly through client.collection(<self>); those are left as-is.
Two changelogSubscription handlers took no params at all and depended on the implicit refetch for their entire read-back.
Secondary collections stay detached via refetchInBackground, which is why the awaited read-back is only ever the mutation's own collection. The policy is now documented once on refetchInBackground, where both surfaces already read it.
2. isError split into three flags that mean different things
isLoadingError (first load failed), isCrashed (local/invariant failure) and isSyncError (rows on screen, sync impaired). Mapping them wrong is how a background sync blip starts replacing visible rows with an error screen — the regression the split exists to prevent.
isLiveQueryFailed in @feeblo/web-shared/collections is the single translation: isLoadingError || isCrashed, deliberately notisSyncError. All 12 former query.isError call sites go through it.
transaction.isPersisted.promise → when("settled") across 33 call sites. 0.15.2 already aliased the two onto the same deferred, so this rename is behavior-preserving; SettleableTransaction loses the isPersisted shape with it.
Audited and not applicable
No $synced, SortedMap, include()/IncludeOperatorRequiredError, groupKeys() (all 7 groupBy calls pair with count()), dependency arrays, direct write* calls, cleanup(), utils.clearError/errorCount, non-string getKey, joined-key reconstruction, or persistence/IndexedDB/WASM usage. The in-memory test sync already called begin() with no argument, and the SSR preloadLiveQuery call sites already use the config-object form the RC requires.
Test plan
New: apps/web/src/dashboard/lib/collection-read-back.test.ts pins the read-back against the real adapter with an in-memory server, including the reverting case — so removing a refetch later fails a test rather than a user's write. It also covers settleOptimisticMutation success, rejection and the synchronous throw for a missing key.
pnpm check — 32/32 tasks, including type-aware Oxlint, the formatter check and Knip
pnpm test for the four affected packages: web 126, post-ui 66, web-shared 70, public-feature-board 23 — all pass
One pre-existing typescript(no-unnecessary-type-conversion)warning in integrations/github/src/github-app-auth.ts is untouched by this branch and present on main
Follow-up found, deliberately not fixed here
The board's preloadLiveQuery({ query }) calls pass no queryKey, while the consuming hooks in post-ui do. getLiveQueryHash hashes queryKeyinstead of the derived IR when one is present, so those two identities never match and such a preload never seeds that hook's snapshot. I confirmed 0.15.2 hashes identically, so this is not an upgrade regression — and the fix is a design decision (mirror keys into every preload across post-ui and both apps, or drop queryKey and rely on derived IR), so it does not belong in a version bump.
Sign-off
This contains a dependency version change (owner decision). The minimumReleaseAgeExclude entries are pinned to exact versions, not bare names, and should be dropped once rc.1 is a day old.
Shard 3/3 first failed four public-board tests on TanStack DB error 253. The diagnosis is in the comment below; the fix is a second commit, fix(web): hydrate the DbClient without the live-query stream.
@tanstack/react-router-with-db@rc.1 enables TanStack DB's live-query SSR stream handshake, which in 1.0 makes closing the stream record a sticky failure. After that, any hydration read of a live query the server did not dehydrate throws inside React's render. A disabled query — useLiveQuery returning undefined, which is supported — keeps its queryKey, so it has an identity the server never ran and could never dehydrate. Every per-viewer query on the public board is disabled for a signed-out visitor. 0.15.2 had no such handshake, so the same code was inert.
The stream's documented purpose is to resolve useLiveSuspenseQuery results discovered during the server render. This app uses useLiveQuery throughout and captures every rendered query in dbClient.dehydrate(), so nothing is lost: withDbClient keeps the adapter's Wrap/DbProvider and dehydrate/hydrate contract and drops only the stream. The dependency is gone from apps/web and the catalog.
Plus the one instance worth fixing independently: post-collection.tsx no longer creates the per-card delete-eligibility query for viewers it can never run for (the contributor branch is its own component).

Bug Fixes
Changes to posts, comments, reactions, votes, subscriptions, boards, roadmaps, and settings now appear more reliably after saving.
Success and error feedback now better reflects when a change has finished processing.
Background sync issues are less likely to replace content already on screen with an error state; genuine loading failures still display an error.
Stale post edits are rejected rather than overwriting newer changes. When a conflict occurs, you can reload the latest version or keep your draft and retry.
`@tanstack/db` 0.15.2 -> 1.0.0-rc.1, with `react-db` and
`react-router-with-db` on the matching RC and `query-db-collection` on its
1.5.0 minor. The three move together: the router adapter peers on
`react-db >=1.0.0-rc.1` and the query adapter peers on
`@tanstack/db ^1.0.0-rc.0`, so bumping one alone resolves two copies of the
DB core. Pinned to exact versions rather than carets because rc.1 is a
release candidate. All three are named in `minimumReleaseAgeExclude` with
the reason inline, since rc.1 is hours old.
Two changes in the RC are silent at the type level, and both would have
shipped as data loss:
The Query Collection no longer refetches after a mutation handler returns.
Commit drops the optimistic layer and the Query cache wins, so a handler
that only awaits its RPC reverts the row to its pre-write value once the
transaction settles — the server accepted the write and the UI undoes it.
Every one of the 69 `onInsert`/`onUpdate`/`onDelete` handlers in the two
collections modules now ends with an awaited `collection.utils.refetch()`,
restoring exactly what 1.4.8 did implicitly (`refetchQueryResults`, also
non-throwing, so error semantics are unchanged). Secondary collections stay
detached through `refetchInBackground`, which is why the awaited read-back
is only ever the mutation's own collection. Two changelog-subscription
handlers took no params at all and depended on the implicit refetch for
their entire read-back; they now take `collection`.
`isError` on a live query split into three flags that mean different
things, and mapping them wrong is how a background sync blip starts
replacing visible rows with an error screen. `isLiveQueryFailed` in
`@feeblo/web-shared/collections` is the single translation: `isLoadingError
|| isCrashed`, never `isSyncError`, which is deliberately excluded because
its rows are still on screen. Every former `query.isError` call site goes
through it.
`transaction.isPersisted.promise` is gone; `when("settled")` is the
replacement. 0.15.2 already aliased the two onto the same deferred, so the
rename is behavior-preserving for the 33 call sites. `SettleableTransaction`
loses the `isPersisted` shape along with it.
`collection-read-back.test.ts` pins the read-back against the real adapter
with an in-memory server, including the reverting case, so removing a
refetch later fails a test rather than a user's write.
`pnpm check` (32/32), and the `web`, `post-ui`, `web-shared` and
`public-feature-board` suites all pass.

Walkthrough
The change updates transaction settlement and collection read-back across dashboard and public-board mutations. It adds shared live-query failure checks, local router DB hydration, post content version checks with editor conflict handling, and conditional contributor-eligibility queries.
Changes: TanStack DB workflows
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Transaction and query-state contracts packages/web-shared/src/lib/collections.ts, pnpm-workspace.yaml
Shared utilities use when("settled") for transaction completion and identify live-query failures from loading-error or crash flags. TanStack DB package versions change.
Collection read-back after mutations apps/web/src/dashboard/lib/collections.ts, apps/public-feature-board/src/lib/collections.ts, apps/web/src/dashboard/lib/collection-read-back.test.ts
Mutation handlers await target-collection refetches after RPC writes. Tests cover read-back results, settlement callbacks, and errors.
Mutation callers wait for settlement apps/web/src/dashboard/features/*, apps/web/src/routes/*, apps/public-feature-board/src/components/changelog/*, packages/post-ui/src/*
Mutation flows wait for transaction settlement before continuing their existing success or failure paths.
Query consumers use isLiveQueryFailed to select existing error states.
Local router DB hydration apps/web/src/lib/router-with-db-client.tsx, apps/web/src/router.tsx, apps/web/package.json, pnpm-workspace.yaml
The router uses a local helper that wraps content in DbProvider and handles server dehydration and client hydration of DB state. The prior router-with-DB dependency is removed.

Content updates accept an optional expected timestamp. The write returns PostVersionConflictError when a supplied timestamp differs from the locked post timestamp. Embedding writes preserve updatedAt; tests cover stale and matching versions.
Editor version and detail reconciliation packages/post-ui/src/post-editor.tsx, packages/post-ui/src/use-post-detail.ts, packages/post-ui/src/post-editor.browser.test.tsx, messages/en.json
The editor sends the loaded timestamp with content updates, refreshes post detail data, waits for transaction settlement, and offers conflict actions to keep or reload the draft. A browser test checks that a refreshed content prop does not replace the draft submitted on save.
The contributor-eligibility query mounts only for a non-manager creator when the post ID and eligibility collection exist. Other cases use manager permission for canDeletePost.
Failed refreshes can cause incorrect votes or duplicate comments. These recoverable cases warrant follow-up.

Tests miss production read-backs
These tests exercise a handler defined inside the test, not either production collections module. Removing await collection.utils.refetch() from a production handler would leave them passing, even though users would see accepted edits revert on screen. Add a test that uses a production collection with a mocked RPC and checks its row after when("settled").

E2E (3/3) failure — diagnosed, and it is not the refactor
Typecheck/Lint/Format, Unit Tests, Docker Smoke Test and E2E shards 1 & 2 are green. Shard 3 fails 4 tests, all public-board, all reproducible locally (--workers=1 --retries=0, so not flake):
on-behalf.spec.ts › dashboard shows the contact name while the public board hides it
on-behalf.spec.ts › public board renders the author under the customer's name
public-board.spec.ts › board navigation stays on the board
public-board-ssr.spec.ts › public board renders from a backup without regenerating it
All four fail on the same client error:
Error: TanStack DB error 253
at _setSsrStreamingEnabled (…/tanstack-db-vendor.js)
at routerWithDbClient hydrate .finally (…/tanstack-react-router-with-db-vendor.js)
[cause] Minified React error #422
Mechanism
@tanstack/react-router-with-db is byte-identical between 0.1.0 and 1.0.0-rc.1 — I diffed the sources. The change is in @tanstack/db core, which in 1.0.0-rc.1 added a streamed-snapshot handshake that 0.15.2 did not have:
On hydrate the adapter calls dbClient._setSsrStreamingEnabled(true), then _setSsrStreamingEnabled(false) in a .finally() once the DB stream closes.
_setSsrStreamingEnabled(false) sets a stickyssrStreamFailure (error 253, "The DB stream ended before the server-rendered query snapshot arrived").
After that, any browser getServerSnapshot() → _waitForSsrLiveQuery(hash, true) throws 253 for any live query not in hydratedLiveQueries, i.e. anything the server did not dehydrate. That throw happens inside React's hydration pass → React #422.
In 0.15.2, _setSsrStreamingEnabled was a plain setter and _waitForSsrLiveQuery did not exist, so the same call was a no-op. main at this branch's base (65dd7d29) is green, so this is introduced by the bump.
Which query
Instrumenting the client (_waitForSsrLiveQuery, hydrate) shows the throwing hash, consistently:
That is post-collection.tsx's eligibility query. Its query function returns undefined — the RC's documented way to disable a query — when contributorCase, the collection, or post.id is absent, which is the case for the anonymous visitors these tests drive. A disabled live query still has a queryHash and still takes the getServerSnapshot wait path, so it asks for a streamed snapshot that by definition was never produced, and the closed stream turns that into a fatal error.
The dashboard never hits this because its shell collections are dehydrated with rows, so its observers reach authoritative and skip the wait. The on-demand public-board surface has no dehydrated rows and no matching identity, so every one of its queries waits.
Why I am not papering over it here
The two app-side options are both architecture decisions, not migration mechanics, and both need sign-off:
Align preload identity with hook identity so these snapshots hydrate. Doesn't cover this failure: the eligibility key contains contributorCase and post.id, and the query is disabled for anonymous visitors, so there is no identity to preload. It would only fix the sibling queries.
Stop using routerWithDbClient's streaming and dehydrate/hydrate the DbClient directly, so streaming is never enabled and ssrStreamFailure is never set — behaviour equivalent to 0.15.2. This means reimplementing what the adapter does (Wrap/DbProvider, router context, dehydrate/hydrate) and drops live-query streaming, which docs/public-page-ssr.md describes as current behaviour.
The right fix is arguably upstream: a disabled query should not wait for a streamed snapshot at all. 1.0.0-rc.1 is the only RC published (and it is hours old), so there is nothing newer to move to yet.
Leaving the PR open and green-except-this for the decision, rather than quietly changing the app's SSR strategy inside a version bump.
`@tanstack/react-router-with-db@1.0.0-rc.1` enables TanStack DB's live-query
SSR stream handshake. In `1.0` that handshake is fatal for any query whose
identity the server did not dehydrate: closing the stream records a sticky
failure (error 253), and from then on every hydration read of a live query
outside the hydrated set throws inside React's render — React error #422.
A query that cannot run is exactly that shape. `useLiveQuery` disables itself
by returning `undefined`, which is supported — but a disabled query keeps its
`queryKey`, so it has an identity the server never ran and could never
dehydrate. Every per-viewer query on the public board is in that state for a
signed-out visitor, which is why four public-board e2e tests failed on
`TanStack DB error 253` (reproducible locally at `--workers=1 --retries=0`).
`0.15.2` had no such handshake, so the same code was inert.
The stream is not needed here. Its documented purpose is to resolve
`useLiveSuspenseQuery` results discovered during the server render, and this app
uses `useLiveQuery` throughout — every rendered query is already captured by
`dbClient.dehydrate()`. `withDbClient` keeps the adapter's `Wrap`/`DbProvider`
and dehydrate/hydrate contract and drops only the stream, so hydration is the
same critical snapshot as before, restored before the router renders. That also
removes the dependency: `apps/web` and the catalog no longer carry
`@tanstack/react-router-with-db`, and its `minimumReleaseAgeExclude` entry goes
with it.
Separately, `post-collection.tsx` stops creating the per-card delete-eligibility
query for viewers it can never run for. That is the one instance worth keeping
fixed on its own: it is the only per-card query that would otherwise exist
solely to be disabled for every anonymous visitor on the board, and it removes
the first query the failing hydration read reached. The contributor branch is
its own component, so no query is created for anyone else.
Verified: the four failing public-board tests pass, the full local suite is
120 passed / 3 flaky (three merge tests that also fail without these changes and
pass on retry, which is CI's retry policy), `pnpm check` is 32/32, and the `web`,
`post-ui`, `web-shared` and `public-feature-board` unit suites pass.

Session changes reset post state
Switching between ResolvedPostCollectionProvider and ContributorEligibilityProvider remounts every child when contributorCase changes. Auth resolves after the public page appears, so contributors viewing their own posts lose expanded comment threads and focus when their session arrives. Later membership or role changes can also clear an unfinished comment.
Keep the children under a stable provider and mount only the eligibility reader conditionally.
Two commits from main: the agent-ready API/webmcp surface (#218) and the
changelog editor staying mounted across a slug rename (#220).
One conflict, in the changelog edit route. Main reworked the entry lookup for
the rename case and no longer keeps a second `changelogQuery` — the page reads
`changelogsQuery` and derives the row from it. Resolved by keeping main's
imports and applying the 1.0 error split to the query that now exists:
`changelogsQuery.isError` becomes `isLiveQueryFailed(changelogsQuery)`, the
same translation used by every other live-query error screen in this tree.
Neither commit from main touches TanStack DB, so the rest of the migration
merges unchanged.
`pnpm check` 32/32 on the merge result.

isLiveQueryFailed(query) excludes isSyncError, so a failed refetch can leave cached content editable. The submit handler then sends that full cached body through UpdatePostContent or UpdatePostContentPublic. The server write does not compare a client-loaded version before applying the content, so this can overwrite another user’s newer edit without warning.
Expose the detail query’s sync state and require a successful refresh or conflict resolution before saving. Add a server-side version check to protect the race that can occur after the refresh.

TanStack DB 1.0 no longer refetches implicitly, so every mutation handler now awaits its own read-back with throwOnError. A failed read-back rejects the transaction instead of settling over rows the client could not confirm.
Content saves now carry the updatedAt version the editor loaded. The shared write path compares it against the locked row and returns PostVersionConflictError when another write won, while the detail query treats a sync failure as an error so saving from stale content stays blocked. Both the dashboard and public content RPCs use the same check.

Preserve the draft when reconciling a version conflict.
When the update is rejected because expectedUpdatedAt is stale, the refetch updates the controlled server content and contentRef.current, but the mounted editor keeps displaying the failed draft. The next retry therefore submits different content from the document shown to the user and can silently discard the draft.
Keep the failed draft separate from the refetched server content. Update the expected server version without overwriting the draft, and require an explicit merge, replace, or retry action before submitting it. Forcing a remount is not an adequate fix because it only makes the display match the server by discarding the user's unsaved draft.

Embedding-only writes now keep the post's updatedAt, so background embedding generation no longer invalidates the version captured when the editor opened.

Kept draft is not saved
After a content conflict, “Keep my draft” can save the server’s body instead of the draft still shown in the editor. The conflict refresh changes detail.content, which PostEditorComponent copies into contentRef. The visible editor stays unchanged, but the next save reads contentRef.
Clicking “Keep my draft” and then Update without typing therefore reports success and resets the editor without saving the user’s changes. Keep the submitted draft separate from refreshed server content.
A conflict refresh changes the detail row's content while the mounted editor still shows the user's draft. The editor was syncing every content-prop change into the submission ref, so Keep my draft could submit the refreshed server body instead.
Seed the submission ref only on mount and reset. Background content changes can still update the prop, but they no longer replace the draft that is finalized on save.

Reconcile the intended state before issuing a retry toggle.
When a read-back rejects settlement after the toggle RPC commits, the optimistic row rolls back. The next click reads that stale row and sends a second toggle RPC, reversing the vote. This occurs for both insert and delete across the dashboard, public-list, and public-detail collections.
Capture shouldUpvote before refetching. If the refetch succeeds and the refreshed row already matches shouldUpvote, return without calling insert or delete. If refetch fails, let the callback fail before issuing another toggle. This handles RPC failures and read-back failures without identifying which stage failed, and the shared callback covers all three collection paths.

In the shared upvote toggle callback, capture the intended state before
refreshing, then refetch with errors propagated and return if the refreshed
`upvoteCollection` already matches that state. Only proceed to `insert` or
`delete` when the refreshed row still needs changing, so a retry cannot reverse
a toggle that already committed.

A toggle whose server write committed but whose read-back failed leaves the local row stale. Retrying from that row could reverse the already-committed vote.
Refresh the collection before deciding and skip the mutation when the server row already matches the intended state. Refetch failures now reject the toggle instead of silently proceeding from stale data.

Upgrades TanStack DB from
0.15.2to the1.0.0-rc.1candidate, following the official 1.0 RC migration guide.@tanstack/db1.0.0-rc.1@tanstack/react-db^0.5.121.0.0-rc.1@tanstack/query-db-collectionThe pair moves together — the query adapter peers on
@tanstack/db ^1.0.0-rc.0, so bumping one alone resolves two copies of the DB core. They are pinned to exact versions rather than carets becauserc.1is a release candidate, and both are named inminimumReleaseAgeExcludewith the reason inline sincerc.1is hours old.@tanstack/react-router-with-dbis removed rather than bumped — see the last section. Verified one resolved copy of@tanstack/dbin the lockfile, so the dev-modeDuplicateDbInstanceErrorcheck stays quiet.
1.4.8 did this read-back implicitly via
refetchQueryResults(undefined, false), which does not throw. So each handler now ends with an awaitedcollection.utils.refetch()— same round trip count as before, same non-throwing error semantics.client.collection(<self>); those are left as-is.changelogSubscriptionhandlers took no params at all and depended on the implicit refetch for their entire read-back.refetchInBackground, which is why the awaited read-back is only ever the mutation's own collection. The policy is now documented once onrefetchInBackground, where both surfaces already read it.2.
isErrorsplit into three flags that mean different thingsisLoadingError(first load failed),isCrashed(local/invariant failure) andisSyncError(rows on screen, sync impaired). Mapping them wrong is how a background sync blip starts replacing visible rows with an error screen — the regression the split exists to prevent.isLiveQueryFailedin@feeblo/web-shared/collectionsis the single translation:isLoadingError || isCrashed, deliberately notisSyncError. All 12 formerquery.isErrorcall sites go through it.transaction.isPersisted.promise→when("settled")across 33 call sites. 0.15.2 already aliased the two onto the same deferred, so this rename is behavior-preserving;SettleableTransactionloses theisPersistedshape with it.Audited and not applicable

New:
apps/web/src/dashboard/lib/collection-read-back.test.tspins the read-back against the real adapter with an in-memory server, including the reverting case — so removing a refetch later fails a test rather than a user's write. The board's
preloadLiveQuery({ query })calls pass noqueryKey, while the consuming hooks inpost-uido.getLiveQueryHashhashesqueryKeyinstead of the derived IR when one is present, so those two identities never match and such a preload never seeds that hook's snapshot. I confirmed 0.15.2 hashes identically, so this is not an upgrade regression — and the fix is a design decision (mirror keys into every preload acrosspost-uiand both apps, or dropqueryKeyand rely on derived IR), so it does not belong in a version bump.Sign-off

Update: the E2E failure, and what fixed it
Shard 3/3 first failed four public-board tests on
TanStack DB error 253. The diagnosis is in the comment below; the fix is a second commit, fix(web): hydrate the DbClient without the live-query stream.@tanstack/react-router-with-db@rc.1enables TanStack DB's live-query SSR stream handshake, which in1.0makes closing the stream record a sticky failure. After that, any hydration read of a live query the server did not dehydrate throws inside React's render. A disabled query —useLiveQueryreturningundefined, which is supported — keeps itsqueryKey, so it has an identity the server never ran and could never dehydrate. Every per-viewer query on the public board is disabled for a signed-out visitor.0.15.2had no such handshake, so the same code was inert. The stream's documented purpose is to resolve
useLiveSuspenseQueryresults discovered during the server render. This app usesuseLiveQuerythroughout and captures every rendered query indbClient.dehydrate(), so nothing is lost:withDbClientkeeps the adapter'sWrap/DbProviderand dehydrate/hydrate contract and drops only the stream. The dependency is gone fromapps/weband the catalog.Plus the one instance worth fixing independently:
post-collection.tsxno longer creates the per-card delete-eligibility query for viewers it can never run for (the contributor branch is its own component).Verified
