fix(docs): make the site check fail on self-closed raw tags and bad config, never crash - #515
The shared site check let a few broken pages through and crashed on one kind of bad link. A self-closed <textarea/> hides the rest of a page in a browser, because HTML ignores that slash, but the check read it as empty. A %00 in a link path stopped the check with a traceback instead of an error line. A theme.features string, a redirect_maps that is not a table, a site URL without a scheme, or a home page with no content block passed without a word.
What changes: .github/scripts/site-check.py (and, on a list, docs/hooks/awesome_site.py) is the new shared copy. Each case above is now an ERROR line; a redirect stub is recognised by its parsed title, and the list's include line may use either quote and CRLF line endings.
Verified: planted controls on a real build, each new rule red before and green after the fix, with the error message checked; all 58 sites in the fleet build and check clean with it.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved site validation to catch malformed HTML, invalid URLs, broken page links, and missing Markdown copies.
Checks now better handle redirects, navigation, and site configuration, helping identify build issues more accurately.
The site checker now parses built HTML to collect page metadata and validate content markers, swallowing tags, links, fragments, and copy targets. It also validates site URLs and plugin, theme, feature, and redirect configuration.

Summary
HTML parsing and page metadata .github/scripts/site-check.py
The parser tracks page metadata, article and template context, HTML and foreign-content tags, links, and redirect titles.
Plugin, theme, and redirect configuration .github/scripts/site-check.py
Plugin inputs are normalized from tables or lists. Theme, feature, plugin, and redirect-map configuration shapes are checked.
Site URL, page, and link validation .github/scripts/site-check.py
The checker validates site URL resolution, page classification, link targets, fragments, and Markdown copy targets.
GeiserX/akou#514: Introduces the Zensical site checker that this PR updates.
Merge Risk: Low · up to a3bf8
The checker can miss some malformed content or configuration and reject certain valid links. These are bounded edge cases, so merging carries low risk with owner awareness and targeted follow-up.

Review comments at @.github/scripts/site-check.py:
- Around line 436-439: Update the redirect_maps lookup in the redirects
validation flow to use the empty-table default only when the key is absent.
Preserve explicit empty values such as [] and "" so the existing type check
reports them as invalid.
- Around line 366-369: Update the theme.features lookup so it defaults to an
empty list only when the key is absent; preserve falsy values that are present
so the existing validation reports them as invalid.
- Around line 374-375: Update the page classification around `named` and
`is_page` so documentation pages are identified independently of `doc.content`;
report missing content for those pages and keep their missing Copy as Markdown
button check active. Preserve the existing exclusions for copied HTML assets and
redirects when determining which files are documentation pages.
- Around line 181-185: Update the swallowing logic in the tag-handling branch to
exempt a title inside a template when its closing title tag is present, so it
does not trigger a swallowing error. Preserve detection of unclosed titles, and
use the parser’s existing context or tag-tracking state to distinguish
template-contained titles.
- Around line 181-185: Update the SWALLOW handling in the shown parser logic so
textarea contents are treated as raw text before URLs are collected, including
on Python 3.11.0 and 3.13.0. Ensure markup inside a closed textarea cannot add
links to doc.urls, while preserving existing handling for other tags.
- Line 402: Update the fragment assignment to split the raw URL fragment on
“:~:” before decoding it with unquote, so encoded separators remain part of the
fragment identifier. Preserve the existing URL trimming and fragment lookup
behavior.
- Around line 154-157: Update the context tracking around the `tag` checks so
SVG `desc` and `title`, as well as applicable MathML integration points, switch
to HTML context when checking swallowing tags. Preserve foreign context for
elements that are not HTML integration points, following the browser’s parsing
rules.
- Around line 334-335: Update the local-link host and port check to compare
effective ports, resolving omitted ports from each URL’s scheme (HTTP defaults
to 80 and HTTPS to 443). Only treat a link as local when its effective port
matches the site URL’s effective port, so links to services on different ports
remain external.
- Around line 136-140: Update handle_startendtag so self-closed script and style
tags enter the parser’s raw-text/CDATA mode, preventing subsequent JavaScript or
CSS text from being parsed as HTML links. Preserve the existing empty-element
behavior for void and foreign-content tags.
