Why

A locality name sent directly as the site's numeric l parameter can be silently ignored. A search can then look locality-filtered while returning regional results. This change resolves listed locality names before constructing the search, and fails closed when a name cannot be resolved safely.

Changes

  • Read locality IDs and labels from the search form, grouped by province.
  • Match names without case, accent or whitespace differences, accepting an exact match or a unique prefix.
  • Stop unknown or ambiguous names with exit 64 before requesting results.
  • Reject an explicitly empty or whitespace-only --locality before any request.
  • Preserve numeric-ID behavior. Omitting the flag still requests a regional search.
  • Update help and documentation. Add tests and two mutation checks in read/mutants.d/genae-locality.txt.

Validation

Prepared independently against upstream main 7c1bc0c35846c4674abad00aa4749ebad1ee8994.

  • Read tests: 467 passed, 20 subtests passed.
  • All 20 Python package test runs: 2,399 passed, 43 subtests passed; both extra shell checks passed.
  • Both added mutation checks fail as intended: 2 mutants, 2 killed. The full existing mutation suite was not completed locally.
  • Zensical clean strict build passed; built-site check: 49 pages, 0 errors.
  • git diff --check passed.

Tests use invented fixtures and fake transport. No live genealogy searches were made for this validation, and no personal or family records are included. Numeric IDs retain the existing pass-through behavior; this change does not validate that an arbitrary numeric ID exists.

No new dependencies. Adapted from the locality fix merged in HALCONDEORO#164, with mutation checks placed in upstream's per-change directory.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Genae searches now accept a listed locality name or numeric ID. Names are matched to the selected province, and the resolved locality is reported before results are shown.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Locality searches now reject blank, unknown, ambiguous, or out-of-province values instead of searching with an invalid locality. When available, suggestions are provided for unmatched names.
    • Searches without a locality continue to return regional results; locality-specific results reflect the site’s available result details.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the Genae search guide and changelog to describe locality names, validation, and error behavior.

Walkthrough

Genae search now accepts a listed locality name or numeric ID. It validates the value against the selected province’s locality form, resolves it to an ID, and reports the resolved locality before requesting results.

Parse and resolve locality options
read/gwt_genae.py, read/test_gwt_genae.py
The code parses locality options by province and resolves IDs or normalized exact name matches. Tests cover successful matches, missing options, unknown values, and ambiguous names.

Explanation

The description conflicts with the changes. It says unique prefixes are accepted and numeric IDs pass through without validation. It also omits the required shared-rules section and the guard and red output for each new test.

Resolution

Update the description to state that names require an exact folded match and numeric IDs must be listed for the province. Add the shared rule and its source, or write "none". For each new test, identify the guarded line and include the failure output with that line removed. Add the template checklist and confirm its conditions.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 60.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 10 functions across 3 files. Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Take only an exact folded name; offer prefix matches as suggestions
instead of searching them. Check numeric ids against the province's
listed options too, since the site ignores an l it does not know.
A form with no options for the province exits 1 (the site changed),
not 64. Print the resolved locality. Read the form from the cache even
under --refresh, without the hx-request header, and parse option
attributes in any order. Fold hyphens like spaces, list ids in an
ambiguity message, drop the unreachable blank check, and add the
CHANGELOG entry.

The problem is real and the approach is right. Genae ignores an l it does not know and returns the whole province, so reading the locality list from the search form, folding names, and stopping with exit 64 (our usual usage-error code) is the right shape. One gated, cached GET of the form fits how the other readers fetch a form. Here is what we will change on this branch before merging, and why.

What we change

  1. No prefix auto-pick.
prefix = [] if exact else [(lid, label) for lid, label in listed if fold(label).startswith(folded)]
accepts a unique prefix. If the town a user types is not listed but is the start of a listed one (invented example: Villa when only Villazul is listed), the search silently runs on the other town. That is the same silent mis-filter this PR fixes, and no test covers that branch. We will accept only an exact folded match. When there is none, the run exits 64 and lists the prefix matches as did you mean: <id> <name>.
  2. Numeric ids get checked too.
    if a.locality and not a.locality.isdigit():
sends a digit string unchecked. An id the site does not list, or an id from another province (each option carries data-provincia), gives the same silent regional search. The form is already cached, so every non-empty --locality will go through it, and an id not listed under --province exits 64.
  3. A changed form is not the user's typo. If the form parses but has nothing for the requested province (for example, the site renames its province codes), every name currently fails as "not a listed locality" with exit 64 (
    listed = localities.get(province, [])
). That case will exit 1 with "the site changed its form".
  4. Show which town was searched. After resolving, the run prints locality<TAB><id><TAB><name>, so the evidence records the id a name became.
  5. The form ignores --refresh.
    _st, _rh, mbody, _cached = R.get(gwt_genae.LOCALITIES_URL, h, refresh=a.refresh,
refetches the form on every refreshed search. That is one more gated request (about 20 s) for a list that rarely changes. The form will use the cache's own 7-day age.
  6. Form request without hx-request. The form GET reused the search headers (
    h = {'accept': gwt_genae.ACCEPT, 'accept-language': gwt_genae.LANGUAGE, 'hx-request': 'true'}
). An htmx server may answer that header with a fragment that has no <select>, and the reader would then treat it as a block. The form gets plain accept headers. The h = {...} line goes back to where it was, which also keeps the overlap with another open PR small.
  7. Options parse in any attribute order. The regex at
    _OPTION = re.compile(r'<option value="(\d+)" data-provincia="(\w+)"[^>]*>(.*?)</option>', re.S)
needs value= directly before data-provincia=. A harmless reorder on the site would make the form look empty, and the gate would read that as a block. Each <option> will now be read attribute by attribute.
  8. Small ones. Hyphens fold like spaces (torre mayor matches Torre-Mayor). An ambiguous name lists ids with the labels, so two options with the same label can be told apart (
    % (value, province, ', '.join(sorted({label for _, label in found}))))
). A CHANGELOG [Unreleased] entry records the behaviour change: --locality '' used to search the whole province and now exits 64.

What we cut

  • The blank check inside resolve_locality (
    if raw and not value:
). The CLI rejects a blank value before any request, so that branch never runs. We keep the CLI check and its tests.

What we leave as it is

  • A form page that does not parse at all still stops as an unreadable page. That fails closed, the same way every reader treats a page it cannot read.

Each change has a test that fails on this PR's head. The mutant rows are updated for the new lines.

Both guards could be weakened with every test still green: a padded id
like ' 701 ' would have exited 64 instead of resolving, and an option
with a non-numeric value would have counted as a locality.
…onflict resolved, the locality entry moves to [Unreleased])
