Every Dependabot bump failed cargo vet until someone edited supply-chain/config.toml by hand, as #652 needed. The file exempts each dependency at one exact version, so a new version of any exempted crate, or a new transitive crate, is unvetted.

A new workflow, dependabot-vet.yml, makes that edit on Dependabot pull requests that change Cargo.lock:

  1. If cargo vet --locked already passes, it stops.
  2. Otherwise scripts/vet-exempt-bumps.py reads cargo vet --output-format json and, for each failing crate, moves its exemption to the new version or adds one for a new crate. No other exemption changes. A failure other than missing criteria stops the job for a person.
  3. It checks cargo vet --locked passes, commits the edit to the Dependabot branch and pushes it.
  4. A push made with GITHUB_TOKEN starts no workflow, so it dispatches ci.yml on the branch. Its checks land on the new head. The publish job in ci.yml only runs for the upstream tailscale owner, so the dispatch cannot publish.

It runs only when the actor is dependabot[bot] and the branch is in this repo.

On MacMini, on the #652 tree with the old exemptions: cargo vet --locked exits 255, the script moves five exemptions and adds ahash, vet then prints "Vetting Succeeded", the result is byte-identical to the hand fix merged in #652, and a second run changes nothing.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Automation
    • Added automated handling for Dependabot pull requests that updates supply-chain vet exemptions when required.
    • Automatically reruns validation after exemption updates and commits approved changes to the branch.
    • Added documentation clarifying the automated Dependabot vet workflow.

…ically

supply-chain/config.toml exempts each dependency at one exact version, so every Dependabot bump
failed cargo vet until someone moved the exemptions by hand (#652). dependabot-vet.yml now does
it: scripts/vet-exempt-bumps.py reads cargo vet's JSON, moves each bumped crate's exemption
or adds one for a new crate, the job checks vet passes, pushes to the Dependabot branch and
dispatches ci.yml so the new head gets its checks.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds a script that updates cargo-vet exemptions and a workflow that runs it for matching Dependabot pull requests. When exemptions change, the workflow commits them and dispatches CI.

Changes: Dependabot cargo-vet automation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parse results and update exemptions
scripts/vet-exempt-bumps.py
The script parses cargo-vet results, serializes criteria, and updates exemption entries in supply-chain/config.toml. It exits without changes on success and reports unsupported failures.
Run Dependabot vet workflow
.github/workflows/dependabot-vet.yml, .github/workflows/ci.yml
The workflow runs for qualifying Dependabot pull requests that change Cargo.lock. It runs and validates cargo-vet, then commits exemption changes and dispatches CI when needed. A CI comment identifies this workflow.

The new automation works for simple version bumps. When an update adds a second version of a crate and keeps the old one, the script can move the existing exemption instead of adding another. The vet check then fails and no fix is committed. The result is a failed check that still needs a manual edit, not a broken or unsafe commit. This is acceptable to merge with follow-up, though fixing it would make the automation reliable for duplicate-version updates.

Keep an exemption when its old version remains in Cargo.lock.

If a bump adds a second version of a crate, this branch replaces the crate’s sole exemption even when the old version remains locked. The next cargo vet --locked check then fails, so the workflow cannot commit the fix. Check the locked versions before moving an exemption; add a second exemption when both versions remain.
