What problem would this solve?
Currently, Update Manager applies its normal staging and waiting rules to all updates.
That works well for higher-risk updates such as Home Assistant Core, OS, Supervisor, network equipment firmware, etc., but some updates are relatively low risk and I would prefer them to install automatically as soon as they become available.
Examples could include:
ESPHome device firmware
Spotify
Selected integrations or add-ons
Other update entities that the user personally considers safe
At the moment, there does not appear to be a way to tell Update Manager that certain update entities or integrations can bypass the normal waiting period while still keeping staging enabled for everything else.
What would you like to happen?
It would be useful to have an Immediate Auto-Update Allow List or similar option.
The user could select specific update entities or integrations that should automatically install as soon as an update becomes available.
“user considers safe”
For example, I could choose:
All ESPHome updates
Spotify
Specific update.* entities
Other selected integrations or add-ons
Anything on this list would bypass the normal staging delay, while all other updates would continue to use Update Manager's existing waiting, staging and safety behaviour.
Ideally, it would support selecting either:
Individual update entities
Entire integrations
Possibly update categories/types
An optional short delay, such as 30 seconds or 1 minute after the update is detected, could also be useful before installation begins.
Alternatives considered
I am currently using a separate Home Assistant automation for ESPHome updates.
The automation detects when an ESPHome update entity becomes available and then installs it automatically.
This works, but it means update behaviour is split between Update Manager and separate Home Assistant automations.
It would be much cleaner if Update Manager could centrally manage both behaviours:
Immediate automatic updates for explicitly trusted/low-risk updates
Normal staged updates for everything else
That would keep all update management in one place while still allowing the user to decide which updates they are comfortable installing immediately.
Thanks for giving this some thought
