Part of #420: the runner, plus two more controls. The other 28 records still need theirs.

What changed

  • uphold_check.py --review --drive [--runs N] -- REVIEWER... plants every [[review.control]] against a reviewer command the caller names.
    • Input: the reviewer gets {"document", "change"} as JSON on stdin. It is never told which record was planted.
    • Output: it prints one violated record per line, by id or by title.
  • Each control runs N times (default 3) on each side. It holds when every run names it for catches and no run names it for misses.
  • The report gives pass@1, pass^k, and the false-positive rate.
  • Exit codes: 1 when a control does not hold. 2 when the reviewer breaks the protocol (non-zero exit, can't be run, names a record that isn't in the document), because that says nothing about the record.
  • No model client in this repo. The reviewer command holds the model, the key and the budget.
  • New controls for fail-fast and least-astonishment. Each misses is a change next to its catches that doesn't violate the record.
  • Updated to drop "the harness is outside this repository": the DESIGN, REFERENCE, README and ROADMAP docs, and the upheld.toml comment.

Evidence

  • python -m unittest discover -s tests: 154 tests OK. That includes 8 new Drive unit tests and 3 CLI tests, among them an answer-key oracle that keeps passing as controls are added.
  • A real reviewer (a small wrapper around claude -p --model haiku, not committed) against the three controls:
fail-fast: caught 3/3, misses fired 0/3 -- holds
least-astonishment: caught 3/3, misses fired 0/3 -- holds
single-authoritative-source: caught 3/3, misses fired 0/3 -- holds
pass@1 1.00; pass^3 3/3 control(s)
false positives 0.00 over 3 control(s) with a misses

Still open on #420

  • Controls for the remaining 28 review-carried records, or a written reason why one can't be planted.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added --review --drive to evaluate a supplied reviewer against review controls, with three runs per side by default and an option to set the run count.
    • Results include per-control outcomes, pass@1 and pass^k scores, and false-positive rates when miss cases are available.
    • Added controls covering parse failures and stale-file checks.
    • Reviewer errors or invalid record names are reported separately from failed control results.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the command reference and design documentation with usage, inputs, scoring, and exit behavior.

…e controls, and two more records carry one

`--drive [--runs N] -- REVIEWER...` hands the named command the compiled
review document and one control's change on stdin as JSON, never the
record it was planted for, and reads back one violated record per line.
Each control runs N times (default 3) on each side; a control holds when
every run names it against `catches` and none against `misses`. The run
prints pass@1 beside pass^k and the false-positive rate, and exits 1 when
a control does not hold. A reviewer that exits non-zero or names nothing
in the document is exit 2, not a miss. No model client lives here.

fail-fast and least-astonishment gain controls. Against claude haiku all
three controls caught 3/3 and fired 0/3 on their misses.

Part of #420.

Walkthrough

The PR adds --review --drive to run a supplied reviewer against configured controls. It validates reviewer output, scores catches and misses across repeated runs, and reports control results and command status.

Changes: Reviewer control driving

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define controls and driving contract
README.md, ROADMAP.md, docs/DESIGN.md, docs/REFERENCE.md, policy/upheld.toml, review-controls.json
Documentation describes the driving inputs, repeated catch and miss runs, scoring, and exit behavior. Two controls, fail-fast and least-astonishment, are added to the control data.
Run and score reviewer controls
scripts/review.py, tests/test_review.py
The driver sends the document and planted change to a reviewer command, validates returned record IDs or titles, counts catch and miss results, and renders scores. Tests cover reviewer output, failures, scoring, and unmeasured misses.
Expose driving through the review command
uphold_check.py, tests/test_review.py
The CLI parses --runs and reviewer arguments, then runs controls after existing review checks pass. Reviewer failures return exit code 2; control results determine exit code 0 or 1.

  • HackingGate/uphold#420 — This PR adds the reviewer-driven mode that the issue describes, including catch and miss runs and pass metrics. It does not add controls for every review-carried record.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 8230d

A stalled reviewer can prevent a control-driving run from finishing, and invalid reviewer output can produce the wrong failure status. Bound each invocation and handle decoding failures before merging.

…or a traceback

`--timeout SECONDS` (default 300) bounds each reviewer invocation, so one
stalled call no longer holds every control after it. Output is decoded as
UTF-8 explicitly, and a decode error is reported as the reviewer breaking
the protocol rather than raised out of the run.
