Why

The Databricks e2e run turned up five git gaps, all in just-git 1.9.1:

The fixes are open upstream, and none is merged or released:

Upstream PR Fixes Head
blindmansion/just-git#15 exec bit on checkout, mode-only changes in status, diff and branch switches (blindmansion/just-git#10) 86ecf4b
blindmansion/just-git#20 a merge keeps a mode change made on either side (blindmansion/just-git#18) eb31efd
blindmansion/just-git#14 git ls-tree, including <rev>:<path> (blindmansion/just-git#12) 597c81e
blindmansion/just-git#21 --summary in show, log and diff (blindmansion/just-git#19) c448cdf

This PR carries all four as a pnpm patch until they're released.

What changed

Review notes

Testing

  • git-command.just-git-patch.test.ts runs real just-bash over SqlFs. Its 8 tests cover:

    • status and diff on a chmod-only change;
    • a mode-only branch switch in both directions, and the refusal to switch over a local chmod;
    • git ls-tree, with -r, a path filter and HEAD:src;
    • a merge of a mode-only change;
    • the mode of a conflicted file;
    • git show --summary.

    On unpatched 1.9.1 all 8 fail. On the previous patch (Fix #12: add git ls-tree blindmansion/just-git#14 and Fix #10: checkout sets the executable bit, and status/diff report mode changes blindmansion/just-git#15 only), 3 fail: the mode-only merge, --summary, and HEAD:src. The conflicted-merge test passes there, because the wrapper's repair covers that case.

  • pnpm check (2,313 unit and 152 TypeScript SDK tests), pnpm lint and pnpm security:audit pass.

  • pnpm verify:local passes: 265 integration tests, 92 HTTP/MCP contract checks and 102 live SDK checks.

  • Over Postgres, with the patch: git status shows M r.sh after a chmod, and git diff shows old mode 100755 / new mode 100644. Switching to the mode-only branch sets 644, and switching back sets 755. A merge of a chmod 755-only branch records 100755, as real git does.

Not covered

The upstream PRs list their own open edge cases. These include modes in rename plus add/add and rename/delete, file/symlink type changes, and --compact-summary.

📝 Walkthrough

The workspace now applies a local patch to just-git 1.9.1. Repository guidance and a changeset describe the patch, and unit tests cover executable-mode handling and git ls-tree output.

Explanation

The PR description and test summary support the core requirements for #10: chmod-only status and diff, mode-only branch switches, and local chmod protection. They do not establish behavior for all #10 checkout paths, including clone, checkout, and restore. The summary supports basic git ls-tree output for #12, but it does not establish the recursive and path-filtered forms listed in the issue objectives. pnpm-lock.yaml is excluded from review, so its patch registration cannot be independently verified.

Resolution

Provide reviewable evidence from the reviewed head for #10 clone, checkout, and restore mode handling, and for #12 recursive and path-filtered git ls-tree behavior. Provide independent evidence for the excluded pnpm-lock.yaml registration if that requirement must be assessed.

P2 Badge Resolve rev:path tree-ishes before listing

When callers use a standard subtree expression such as git ls-tree HEAD:src, this passes the entire argument to Me, which only resolves revisions, so the command reports Not a valid object name instead of listing that subtree. The Git ls-tree documentation explicitly uses HEAD:sub as a valid non-root tree input, and this bundle already has the Go/Zy rev:path resolution path used by other commands; apply that resolution before py.

Preserve the incoming mode when ours changed only the content.

When d===m, theirs retains the base content. If ours changed the content and kept the base mode, the resolver selects l.mode, so the merge result drops theirs mode-only change. Git combines independent content and executable-bit changes. Select u.mode when ours still has the base mode.

In the `uo` merge-resolution function, preserve independent mode changes when
`d===m`: use `u.mode` if `l.mode` still matches the base mode `f.mode`;
otherwise keep `l.mode`. Leave the content-selection behavior unchanged.

Add coverage for ls-tree recursion and path filters.

The test only lists the top-level run.sh entry. It does not pass -r or a path argument, so regressions that ignore either option can still pass. Add a nested file, exercise recursive listing and a path filter separately, and assert nested inclusion and unrelated-entry exclusion.

Carry blindmansion/just-git#15 (fixes #10) and #14 (fixes #12) until a
just-git release includes them. git status and git diff report a
chmod-only change, a branch switch applies a mode-only difference and
refuses to overwrite a local one, and git ls-tree works.

The wrapper keeps applying index modes because just-git's merge still
leaves a conflicted file with its old mode.

Rebuild patches/just-git@1.9.1.patch from v1.9.1 with blindmansion/just-git#14, #15, #20 and #21 merged in. A merge now keeps a mode change made on either side, git show/log/diff accept --summary, and git ls-tree resolves <rev>:<path>.

Superseded by #265, which upgrades to published just-git 1.10.0 and preserves all eight regression tests from this PR. The release includes all four upstream fixes, so the vendored patch is no longer needed. pnpm check, pnpm verify:local, and pnpm security:audit passed for the replacement.
