# Tella is Open source

The security and privacy of Tella users is at the core of our mission. It is therefore natural for the application's code to be entirely open-source. This means that it is publicly available for review: anyone can audit our code to verify that we don't misuse user data, that we actually do what we say, and that our code is robust.

Tella's code for both Android and iOS can be accessed [here on our GitHub repository](https://github.com/horizontal-org). Rather than trust us, you can audit the code yourself or ask someone you trust to do it, or read the [reports](/security-and-privacy#security-audits) that independent security firms wrote after auditing Tella’s code.

We also publish and maintain a fully Free and Open Source version of Tella for Android that doesn't contain any closed-source or proprietary library or dependency. You can find the code for that version of Tella [on Github](https://github.com/Horizontal-org/tella-Android/) and in the [F-droid store](https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.hzontal.tellaFOSS/).

A detailed list of features available on each platform is available here:

# Dropbox Connection

[Dropbox](https://www.dropbox.com/) is commercial file hosting service that offers free and paid plans.

Tella allows users to sign into their Dropbox account directly from Tella and upload files directly to it.

Similarly to other server connections (like [Tella Web](/tella-web), [Google Drive](/g-drive), [Nextcloud](/nextcloud), [Uwazi](/uwazi) or [Open Data Kit](/odk)), connecting to a Dropbox server enhances the security of data collected on Tella by:

1. Allowing users to collect data directly inside Tella's encrypted container.
2. Ensuring that data is sent directly from Tella to Dropbox, without needing to install the Dropbox app on the device or sending the data through a third-party app.
3. Allowing users to back up their data to a remote server, to lower the risk that data is discovered on their mobile device.
4. Ensuring that organizations can preserve important information even in the event of device seizure or destruction, and can organize it for research, advocacy, or accountability processes.

Submissions to Dropbox take the form of "reports" which include a title, a text description, and files like photos, videos and audio recordings.

:::danger
Even though data is transferred to the server securely (SSL), anyone with access to the Dropbox account can view the files. If you need encrypted file transfers, explore [Nearby Sharing](/nearby-sharing).

:::note
The Dropbox connection is not available in Tella Android FOSS, because it uses closed-sourced libraries.
:::

## When to Use Dropbox {#when-to-use-dropbox}

The Dropbox connection may be particularly well-suited for:
- Organizations that already use Dropbox.
- Organizations that cannot or don't want to self-host an app (like [Tella Web server](/tella-web)) on a server.
- Users who already have a Dropbox account and want to backup their data to the cloud.
- Projects where the privacy needs do not preclude the use of a cloud or commercial tool like Dropbox.
- Users who will be sending mostly media files, with some text and don't need structured data collection like forms or surveys.

:::tip
If you need help figuring out if Dropbox is best for your use-case, [check out this guide](/for-organizations#selecting-the-right-type-of-server) or [contact us](/contact-us)!
:::

## Connect to Dropbox {#connect-to-dropbox}

In order to connect to Dropbox:

* Navigate to **Settings ⚙️** > **Connections** > **+**
* Select "Dropbox" from the list of available server types.
* A new page will automatically open in your phone's web browser and direct you to Dropbox.
* Login your Dropbox account in your web browser.
* Grant Tella permissions to modify your Dropbox account (we need this permission to be able to upload files to your drive and create folders on your behalf).

## Manage the Dropbox connection {#manage-the-dropbox-connection}

* In **Settings ⚙️** > **Connections** > **Dropbox** > **⫶** you can:
- Delete the connection

For the moment it is not possible to sign into multiple Dropbox accounts at the same time. If you want to sign-in with another account, delete your Dropbox connection and create a new one.

## Submit to Dropbox {#submit-to-dropbox}

* Once connected, a "Dropbox" card will appear in the "Connections" section of the homescreen. Tap on this card to start submitting to Dropbox.
* The main Dropbox screen allows navigation between the Drafts, Outbox, and Submitted tabs.
* Tap the "New report" button at the bottom of the screen to create a new report to Dropbox.
* On the "New report" screen you can fill in the report's details, including title, description, and optional attachments of photos, videos and audio recordings.
* Use the "Save draft" button 💾 (on the top right of the screen) to save the report as a draft without leaving the "New report" screen.
* In order to be able to save as a draft, you need to at least enter the report’s title.
* A message will appear on the screen to confirm the draft was saved.
* The "Submit later" button ⏱️ saves the report to the Outbox for manual submission.
* The "Outbox" tab is often used when data collectors don’t have access to the internet or if the connection is not stable.
* The “Submit” button immediately sends the report to Dropbox.
* If submission fails due to connectivity issues, the report goes to the “Outbox" tab.
* If the report is submitted correctly, it goes to the “Submitted” tab and a new folder (named after the report title you typed in) will be created in Dropbox under **Applications** >> **Tella**. All attachments will be added to the folder and the description will be added as a text file inside the folder.

## Draft Reports {#draft-reports}

A Draft report is a report that was created and saved but not yet submitted. Drafts reports are useful to save work in progress that can be editted later on. It allows users to create reports offline or over a long period of time before finalizing and sending them. This is especially useful in low-connectivity areas or when a user needs to gather information in multiple stages.

Reports in the Draft tab can be edited.

* On the "New report" screen, tap the "Save draft" button 💾 (on the top right of the screen) to save the report as a draft.
* A confirmation will be displayed, and you can continue working on the report or exit to come back to it later.
* If you try to exit a report without saving, you will be asked to confirm whether you are sure you want to exit without saving.
* In the Draft tab, you can view and manage draft reports. Open a draft report to continue working on it and submit it.
* You can delete a draft report by tapping on **⫶** > **Delete** or by entering the report and tapping the Delete button.

#### Submit a Report to Dropbox{#submit-a-report-to-dropbos}

* In a report, tap "Submit" to start the submission of the report.
* You will be redirected to a summary screen displaying the upload progress for each file attachment.
* A "Delete" button is available to stop the upload and delete the report.
* If the report is actively uploading, a "Pause" button allows you to temporarily halt the upload, which can be resumed later using the "Resume" button.
* Exiting a report doesn’t affect the upload status. If the report is actively uploading, the process continues.

:::info
After a report has been uploaded to Dropbox, it is not possible to delete it on Dropbox from the Tella mobile app. Deleting a submitted report will only delete the local version of it, not the report on the server.
:::

:::info
Deleting a report in the middle of submission will cancel the upload of the files that haven’t been uploaded yet, but submitted files and partially submitted files that are already on Dropbox won’t be deleted.
:::

#### Outbox {#outbox}

The Outbox tab contains reports that are finalized and have been saved for later submission. Reports in the Outbox are ready to be submitted once the device reconnects to the internet or when the user chooses to manually send them.

Reports in the Outbox tab cannot be edited.

To send a report to the Outbox, use the Submit later button (⏱️), at the bottom left of the Submit Report screen.

The Outbox contains:

* Paused submissions
* Report submissions that were interrupted due to connectivity issues.
* Reports that were marked as "Submit later"

:::tip
If you need a fully offline way to share files with others, consider exploring [Nearby Sharing](/nearby-sharing).
:::

#### Submitted Reports {#submitted-reports}

- The Submitted tab displays reports that have been successfully submitted to the Dropbox server.
- In the Submitted tab, you can view and deleted the submitted reports.

:::info
If the internet connection is interrupted, reports will go to the "Outbox" tab and you will need to manually resume the submission.

# Tella Connections – Overview

In addition to keeping their data protected within the app, users can use **Connections** to securely share data with others. Depending on the type of connection, some possible use cases include:
- Volunteers or activists on the ground submitting forms directly to their organization from Tella.
- A group of people connecting to a drive, cloud, or shared space to send files.
- A group of journalists sharing encrypted data with each other during an internet shutdown.
- An individual backing up selected files to their personal computer.

There are two main types of connections:
- [**Nearby Sharing**](#nearby-sharing): Share encrypted files with another Tella device in physical proximity. This feature does **not** require an internet connection and is typically used during internet shutdowns.
- [**Upload to a server**](#server-connections): Connect to a server and upload files over the internet so that others can access them. This feature is commonly used by organizations running data collection processes.

Connections can be configured on **Settings** → **Connections**. The Tella home screen will display a shortcut to all connected servers. Nearby Sharing is turned on by default, but it can be disabled as well.

## Nearby Sharing {#nearby-sharing}

Nearby Sharing can be used to transfer files directly between Tella vaults. It is available on Tella Android, Tella iOS, and Tella Desktop. Transfers are encrypted, use the Wi-Fi protocol, and work with or without an internet connection, even on insecure or monitored networks.

We designed this connection type with a strong focus on security, especially for use in repressive environments, and it has been [audited by an independent security firm](/security-and-privacy#security-audits).

<Button label="Continue reading about Nearby Sharing" link="/nearby-sharing"/>

## Server Connections {#server-connections}

Server Connections are useful for organizations leading data collection processes. Organizations can choose, configure, and manage a server to centralize data collected by volunteers or activists in the field. These individuals gather information using Tella on their devices and then send it to their organization.

Previous Tella deployments, where on-the-ground users collected data and sent it to an organization's server, have ranged from 1 to 2,000 users. You can read user stories [here](/user-stories), or [contact us](/contact-us) for assistance in finding the best way to use Tella for your organization.

Currently, Tella can connect to the following types of servers:

* [Open Data Kit (ODK)](/odk)
* [Uwazi](/uwazi)
* [Tella Web](/tella-web)
* [Google Drive](/g-drive)
* [Nextcloud](/nextcloud)
* [Dropbox](/dropbox)

Feature availability by platform:
<ConnectionsTable/>

Some individuals use commercial clouds (Google Drive, Dropbox, Nextcloud) as a backup system for their Tella data. However, we advise using this feature with caution:
- Automatic backups to any server are **not** currently available. They need to be made manually as submissions to each of the servers.
- Files on the server will be accessible to anyone with server access.

[Read more about backups in Tella](/features#backup-files)

:::info
All server connections are **offline first**, with built-in mechanisms to pause and resume uploads when the internet is unreliable. Learn more about [offline data collection here](/features#offline-data-collection).
:::

:::danger
Even though data is transferred to the server securely (SSL), files stored on the server are **not** encrypted. Anyone with access to the server can view them.
:::

<Button label="Continue reading about Server Connections and how organizations use Tella" link="/for-organizations"/>

:::tip
The [Share](/features#share-button) feature is also available for sharing files directly with other apps installed on the device.
