4.0.0

Introduction

The release 4.0.0 defines the foundation that enables AI contributions and will improve the maintenance of oauthlib by using AI agents, skills, code for both contributors and maintainers. It includes devcontainer, skills and cleanup of instructions.

What's Changed

Important: this release contains 2 breaking changes. See CHANGELOG.rst for details:

  • Removed JSONP support from token revocation endpoint (#951)
  • Client authentication validation reorganized across grants (#919, #920): the grant_type parameter is now validated before client authentication.

Changelog

4.0.0 (2026-09-28):

OAuth2.0 Provider:

  • Breaking: #951: Removed JSONP support from token revocation endpoint. JSONP has been superseded by CORS for cross-origin requests. The enable_jsonp parameter has been removed from RevocationEndpoint and the callback parameter has been removed from prepare_token_revocation_request.
  • Breaking: #919, #920: Fixed DeviceCodeGrant.validate_token_request trying to authenticate public clients. Client authentication validation has been reorganized and is now shared across AuthorizationCodeGrant, DeviceCodeGrant, RefreshTokenGrant and ResourceOwnerPasswordCredentialsGrant: the grant_type parameter is validated before client authentication, so requests missing grant_type now return 400 invalid_request instead of 401 invalid_client.
  • #963: Improved PKCE code comparison

Misc:

  • #904: Stop installing examples into site-packages.
  • #930: Add devcontainer, Add Python3.14, Python3.14t.
  • #931: Fix ruff checks about unused variables.
  • #932: Dropped EOL Python 3.8 from CI.
  • #934: Pre-commit hooks autoupdate.
  • #938: Fix typos discovered by typos.
  • Add OAuthLib Maintainer agent for automated issue/PR triage and release management.

Summary by cubic

Bumps the indirect oauthlib dependency from 3.3.1 to 4.0.0 in uv.lock. This major release includes two breaking changes in the OAuth2.0 provider worth checking against the project's code.

Breaking Changes

  • JSONP support is removed from the token revocation endpoint; enable_jsonp and callback parameters no longer exist.
  • Client authentication validation is shared across grants, and grant_type is now checked first: missing grant_type returns 400 invalid_request instead of 401 invalid_client.

Written for commit 94656c2. Summary will update on new commits.

🔥 The Roast: A major bump (3.3.1 → 4.0.0) that upstream announces with two breaking changes, and pr-agent never imports oauthlib itself — it just inherits it through atlassian-python-api and msrest. The Atlassian path at least screams: from atlassian.bitbucket import Cloud (pr_agent/git_providers/bitbucket_provider.py:9) is a module-level import the unit suite already exercises, so a client-API break there breaks CI loudly. The Azure path whispers instead: pr_agent/git_providers/azuredevops_provider.py:93 wraps the entire optional stack in a blanket except ImportError and quietly flips AZURE_DEVOPS_AVAILABLE = False, and nothing in the suite asserts that flag stays True or that msrest.authentication still imports. So if oauthlib 4.0.0 ever stubs a toe in requests-oauthlib 2.0.0's expectations, the Azure DevOps provider evaporates in production while CI applauds a green checkmark.

🩹 The Fix: Add a tiny guard test asserting the optional Azure stack still imports (e.g. import msrest.authentication, and AZURE_DEVOPS_AVAILABLE is True when msrest is installed), so the next oauthlib major bump fails loudly in CI instead of silently disabling a provider.

File Line Roast
uv.lock 2135 Major transitive bump with a silently-swallowed blast radius: the Azure DevOps provider's blanket except ImportError would disable the provider instead of failing CI

🏆 Best part: The two upstream breaking changes (JSONP removal on the revocation endpoint, grant_type-before-client-auth reorg) are both OAuth2 provider-side, and pr-agent is strictly an OAuth2 client — it never imports oauthlib directly, only transitively via atlassian-python-api and msrest. The blast radius is genuinely tiny. I checked twice because I didn't believe it.

💀 Worst part: The one path that could break quietly — pr_agent/git_providers/azuredevops_provider.py:93 catches ImportError across the whole optional Azure stack and flips AZURE_DEVOPS_AVAILABLE = False. A major oauthlib bump that nicks the msrest → requests-oauthlib → oauthlib chain would silently delete Azure DevOps support in production, with a fully green CI run. The Atlassian/Bitbucket path gets a free smoke test (from atlassian.bitbucket import Cloud is module-level and the unit suite imports it); the Azure path gets silence.

📊 Overall: Like swapping the battery in a smoke alarm — the part is right, the alarm still works, but only for the house that has a test button.
