One file, no build step. Drop it in your plugins folder and you can record voice messages on desktop the way the mobile app does, with bitrate control, lossless trimming, automatic silence trimming, and downloads in ogg, wav or mp3.

This is the BetterDiscord port of VoiceMessagesPlus for Vencord. Both are based on Vencord's built-in VoiceMessages plugin by Ven, Vap0r1ze and Nickyux. GPL-3.0-or-later.
Discord voice messages are always Opus audio inside an Ogg container. That is what every official client expects, and mobile in particular refuses anything else.
The catch: Chromium, which Discord's desktop app is built on, cannot record Ogg. MediaRecorder only produces WebM/Opus. Plugins that upload those bytes as voice-message.ogg produce a file that plays on desktop, because Chromium is forgiving, but that mobile clients and normal audio players often refuse.
This plugin remuxes instead: the encoded Opus packets are copied untouched into a hand written Ogg container with correct page checksums and granule positions. No re-encoding, so no quality loss, and the output is a genuine .ogg.
Verified with ffmpeg: decoded PCM from the remuxed Ogg is bit for bit identical to decoding the WebM source, and an Ogg round trip returns byte identical Opus packets.
- Opus bitrate from 24 to 256 kbps. Discord's own mobile recorder is fixed and low
- Mono or stereo, plus a studio mode that disables noise suppression, echo cancellation and auto gain for music grade capture
- Lossless trimming with start and end sliders. Cuts land on Opus packet boundaries, so nothing is re-encoded
- Automatic silence trimming, so the dead air before you start talking and after you finish is removed. Adjustable afterwards, or switch it off
- Live input level meter, recording timer, pause and resume, optional auto stop
- Microphone picker, independent of your Discord input device
- Upload an existing audio or video file and have its audio converted to OggOpus
- Save the recording to disk before sending
- Accurate waveform and duration read from the Opus bitstream itself
- Ctrl+Shift+V hotkey, or right click the upload button
- Works with replies
Right click any voice message:
- Download Voice Message in your default format
- Download as Original
.ogg, WAV, or MP3 - Copy Audio Link
WAV conversion is pure JavaScript and needs no extra tools. That is the one to pick when someone says they cannot play the file. MP3 and M4A use ffmpeg when it is installed.
Everything is in Settings → Plugins → VoiceMessagesPlus → settings cog: bitrate, stereo, studio mode, the three voice processing toggles, auto stop duration, auto silence trim, waveform normalisation, the Ctrl+Shift+V hotkey, ffmpeg use and path, and the default download format and bitrate.
Because the file was probably WebM wearing an .ogg name, which Discord mobile rejects. That is the specific bug this plugin fixes: it produces genuine OggOpus, so your messages play on Android, iOS and in ordinary desktop players.
No. Discord does not offer voice message recording on desktop at all, on any client. This plugin adds it.
No. Recording, sending, trimming, and ogg and wav downloads all work with nothing installed. ffmpeg only adds mp3 and m4a downloads plus fast conversion of unusual input formats.
No. The plugin keeps the individual Opus packets and cuts on packet boundaries, so trimming rewrites the container rather than the audio. Granularity is one Opus frame, 20 ms by default.
96 kbps mono is already transparent for speech and is the default. Go above 128 kbps only for music, and turn on studio mode when you do, since noise suppression and auto gain are tuned for voice.
Until it hits your normal Discord upload size limit. At 96 kbps that is roughly 14 minutes on the free tier. Lower the bitrate for longer clips.
Yes, right click the message. Take the original .ogg for an exact copy, or WAV if your player will not open Ogg.
It is a client mod, which is against Discord's terms of service like every client mod, and enforcement against them is not a thing that normally happens. The plugin uses Discord's own upload and message APIs the way the official clients do, and sends nothing anywhere else.
Discord internals are located by shape rather than by name, so ordinary updates should not break it. If sending ever fails with a message about the upload API, that is what changed. Open an issue.
Yes: VoiceMessagesPlus. Same features, plus a /voicemessage command instead of the hotkey.
Only needed for MP3 and M4A downloads, and to convert uploaded files that are neither Ogg nor WebM without the slow realtime fallback. Set the full path in settings if it is not on your PATH.
ffmpeg is invoked with execFile, never through a shell, and every argument comes from a fixed template in the plugin. Nothing you type is passed as an argument except the binary path itself.
- Ogg input is passed through, WebM/Opus is remuxed losslessly, anything else needs a real re-encode: ffmpeg when available, otherwise a WebAudio realtime pass that takes about as long as the clip.
- Trim granularity is one Opus frame, 20 ms by default.
- Stereo and high bitrates are wasted on speech. 32 to 64 kbps mono is about what the mobile app sends.
