Project AETHER is an ongoing personal research and build project exploring distributed AI robotics, edge computing, and autonomous systems with a security first by design approach.
The core idea behind AETHER is a Hive Mind architecture that decouples a lightweight mobile robotic agent from heavy AI computation. Instead of embedding all intelligence directly on the robot, sensor data is streamed to a centralized compute base station that performs perception, reasoning, orchestration, and decision making.
This project is fully end to end and hands on. I am responsible for the system architecture, hardware integration, distributed infrastructure, AI inference pipelines, and control interfaces as a single cohesive system.
AETHER serves as a research platform for investigating how autonomy, AI, and networking intersect in real world cyber physical systems.
At a high level, AETHER consists of two primary components.
A lightweight robotic platform responsible for mobility, local sensing, and real time telemetry. The agent focuses on movement and data capture rather than heavy computation.
A centralized distributed compute cluster responsible for perception, AI inference, orchestration, and coordination. This layer aggregates sensor data from the mobile agent and executes higher level reasoning and control logic.
This separation allows the system to scale intelligence without scaling hardware complexity on the robot itself, while also introducing important design and security tradeoffs that are explicitly explored in this project.
Project AETHER treats security as a first class architectural concern rather than an afterthought.
Distributed robotics systems significantly expand the attack surface across mobile agents, edge devices, networks, and centralized compute infrastructure. Introducing remote AI inference, orchestration, and command control creates new trust boundaries that must be carefully designed and monitored.
This project explicitly documents security considerations related to AI driven IoT and edge robotics systems, including but not limited to:
- Trust boundaries between mobile agents and centralized services
- Authentication and authorization between distributed components
- Data integrity and tamper resistance for sensor streams
- Risks introduced by remote inference and orchestration
- Failure modes and degraded operation under partial compromise
Security tradeoffs, open questions, and design decisions will be documented as the system evolves.
Development is currently focused on Phase 1: Hive Mind base station initialization.
This phase centers on standing up the distributed infrastructure required to support the system, including orchestration, service discovery, data routing, and AI inference foundations. Mobile agent integration and higher level autonomy are planned for later phases.
This repository serves as living documentation of the design process, technical decisions, and implementation progress.
The project is intentionally developed in phases to keep scope manageable and design decisions explicit.

The project draws from modern robotics, AI, and distributed systems tooling, including:
- ROS2
- NVIDIA Isaac ROS
- NVIDIA Jetson platforms
- Kubernetes for orchestration
- Computer vision models such as YOLO
- Local large language models for command interpretation
Specific implementation details may change as the project matures.
