feat(behavior): cap the streaming audio cache with streaming_audio_cache_limit - #966
The native streaming audio cache had no size cap: streaming_audio_cache is only an on/off switch, and the librespot cache is built with no limit, so the audio cache grows without bound.
This adds a streaming_audio_cache_limit behavior key parsed from values like 1G, 512M or a bare byte count. Empty and 0 mean unlimited. The parsed limit is passed to the librespot audio cache size limiter, which prunes the cache to the limit on startup and as new audio is written. The setting applies when streaming_audio_cache is enabled and takes effect after a restart, like the other streaming keys.
An invalid value is a fatal config error even when audio caching is disabled, the same policy auto_update_delay follows. The limit is for the librespot player; Soloist keeps its own fixed cache cap.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added a configurable size limit for the streaming audio cache. Enter a byte count or a size with a K, M, or G suffix; leave the setting empty or enter 0 for unlimited.
The limit applies when streaming audio caching is enabled and takes effect after restarting. Invalid values are rejected, even when caching is disabled.
Documentation
Updated configuration guidance with accepted formats, behavior, and examples.
…che_limit
Add a streaming_audio_cache_limit behavior key parsed from 1G-style
values (K/M/G suffixes or a bare byte count; empty or 0 means
unlimited), validated on the config load, Settings edit and SetSetting
paths, and passed to the librespot audio cache size limiter. The limit
applies when streaming_audio_cache is enabled and takes effect after a
restart; the cache is pruned on startup and as new audio is written.
Soloist keeps its own fixed cache cap.
ClosesLargeModGames#957
Adds a configurable limit for the streaming audio cache. The setting accepts byte counts and binary K/M/G suffixes. Empty or zero values mean unlimited. When audio caching is enabled, startup passes the parsed limit to cache creation.

Summary
Cache limit configuration and parsing src/core/user_config.rs, docs/configuration.md, CHANGELOG.md
Adds the configuration field and size parser. Loading validates the value even when caching is disabled, and serialization preserves it. Tests cover parsing, validation, and YAML round-tripping.
Settings registration and validation src/core/app/*, src/core/i18n/settings*, src/gui/protocol.rs, src/tui/handlers/settings.rs, src/core/action/tests.rs
Adds the setting to the settings interfaces and localized text. Invalid edits display an error and retain the current edit state. Tests cover valid and invalid values.
Passes the configured limit to cache creation when audio caching is enabled. Tests check cache pruning with a limit and behavior when caching is disabled or the limit is absent. Documentation describes the limit and its scope.

Setting a streaming audio cache limit can make librespot prune files through a symlinked directory inside the cache folder. With a very large cache, startup pruning can also exceed the player-build timeout and drop playback back to the Web API. Resolve both before merging.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title uses the conventional-commit prefix "feat" with the scope "behavior", which matches the title requirement. It names the setting streaming_audio_cache_limit, which is the main change in the changeset: a new behavior key that caps the librespot streaming audio cache, with parsing, validation, settings UI, GUI, and runtime wiring all tied to it. The subject is concise and imperative.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes remain connected to issue #957. Configuration parsing, validation, persistence, settings UI, localization, documentation, runtime wiring, blocking cache initialization, pruning tests, and changelog updates support the audio-cache limit. No unrelated change is demonstrated. The Soloist cache remains unchanged as stated.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #957 requests a setting that enforces a maximum audio-cache size. The pull request adds parsing, validation, persistence, UI, runtime wiring, and pruning tests for streaming_audio_cache_limit. However, the review summary reports unresolved symlink defects in the pinned spotatui-librespot-core cache implementation, specifically in init_dir and save_file, and states that the fork fix remains a prerequisite. The available evidence therefore does not support reliable cache-limit enforcement at the reviewed head.
Resolution
Fix the pinned librespot cache implementation, or use a release that contains the init_dir and save_file symlink fixes. Keep a regression test that verifies pruning enforces the configured limit with the affected cache layout.

Prevent pruning outside the audio cache.
If a directory inside audio is a symlink, the 0.8.7 cache limiter follows it and can delete files in its target when the limit is exceeded. Exclude symlinked directories from pruning before enabling the limiter.

Prevent failed cache writes from creating cache hits.
The spotatui-librespot-core 0.8.7 cache writes the file before it updates the limiter. If the copy fails, the partial destination remains. Cache::file can then open that path as a cache hit, while touch cannot add it to limiter accounting. Make room for the incoming file before copying when its size is known, and remove the destination on every copy failure.

Both findings are valid in the pinned spotatui-librespot-core 0.8.7 cache implementation. The fixes belong in the fork's init_dir and save_file, but this PR enables pruning when a limit is configured, so the symlink issue matters here. I suggest handling the fixes in a separate fork PR and waiting for spotatui to pin a fixed release before merging this change.

Thanks for this. I'll hold off on approving until the fork fix for the symlink issue lands, as you suggested. A few small things in the meantime:
The docs and the setting description use 10K as an example. That is smaller than any audio file, so librespot writes each track and prunes it right after save_file: the cache stays empty while every track is still written to disk. A realistic example such as 512M, or a warning below some minimum, would avoid that.
prepare_frontend turns the stored value into bytes with .expect(...). Every writer I found validates first, so it can't fire today, but logging a warning and falling back to None would keep a future unvalidated writer from crashing startup.
Cache::new now walks and prunes the whole audio directory synchronously inside the async new_cache_only, at startup and on each backend rebuild. For someone who turns a limit on after months of unlimited caching, that can block a runtime worker for a while; wrapping it in spawn_blocking would avoid that.
Nit: the CHANGELOG entry could follow its neighbours' format, with a bold title and a link to #957.
Review follow-ups for LargeModGames#957:
- use 1G/512M examples instead of 10K in the setting descriptions
- fall back to an unlimited cache with a warning when the stored limit
cannot be parsed instead of panicking at startup
- build the librespot cache on the blocking pool so pruning a large
cache cannot stall an async runtime worker
- match the neighbouring changelog entry format
The setting descriptions in all three locales now use 1G/512M examples, and the regenerated GUI strings match them.
The startup expect is now a warning with an unlimited-cache fallback. Invalid values in the config file still fail validation on load, so this only covers a future writer that skips validation.
Cache::new runs on Tokio's blocking pool, awaited before the cached credentials are read, so pruning a long-unlimited cache no longer stalls an async runtime worker. Both the startup path and the backend rebuilds go through it.
The changelog entry now follows the neighbouring format and links Audio cache limit #957.
Checked locally: cargo test --lib audio_cache_limit 8 passed; the full lib suite 2378 passed; the slim (telemetry, tui) suite 1863 passed; the gui+streaming+self-update suite 1670 passed; clippy -D warnings clean on slim, default and gui+streaming; cargo fmt --check clean; the GUI npm run lint, format:check, typecheck and vitest run (574 passed) all clean; the gates ratchet passes.
The fork's symlink fix remains the prerequisite for approval, as agreed.

Keep cache pruning outside the player-build timeout.
Cache::new runs inside the spawn_blocking task that startup and native recovery await under player_build_timeout(). The timeout defaults to 45 seconds, although SPOTATUI_STREAMING_INIT_TIMEOUT_SECS can change it. If cache initialization exceeds that finite timeout, startup aborts the player build and falls back to the Web API, while the blocking operation continues. Native recovery can then start another Cache::new on the same directory.
Separate cache initialization from the handshake timeout, and coordinate retries with the running initialization task.

Tracing both callers confirms the default 45s timeout bounds the player-build wait, but the blocking cache walk can keep running and overlap a later rebuild. The fork fix we are waiting for covers the symlink traversal in the cache walk, which is separate from this timeout and retry coordination. Would you prefer shared cache initialization with a separate handshake deadline in this PR or as a follow-up?
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@niukanen1 I recommend shared cache initialization with a separate handshake deadline in this PR. Enabling pruning makes cache initialization potentially long-running, so timeout and retry coordination belong with the feature.
Keep the fix narrow:
Make startup and native recovery await the same in-flight cache initialization for a cache directory.
Keep that initialization alive if a caller stops waiting.
Start the player-build deadline after cache initialization completes. Preserve the existing handshake timeout.
Add a deterministic regression test with delayed initialization. Verify that a cancelled wait followed by a rebuild does not start a second cache walk.
The fork’s symlink fix remains a separate prerequisite before merging. Fixing symlink traversal does not prevent overlapping initialization, and fixing coordination does not make symlink traversal safe.

I'll fix the symlink recursion in init_dir and make a failed prune on init log instead of failing Cache::new in the fork, then bump the pin. One change here: a bad streaming_audio_cache_limit should warn and fall back to no limit, like most settings, not stop boot.
