Conversation
Require a first name when someone joins through the member form while keeping the compact newsletter signup available. Explain the optional phone number, allow transportation questions to be left blank, and give editable fields a consistent raised background across the site. Co-authored-by: Codex <noreply@openai.com>

TL;DR
Member signup now requires a first name, explains why LVBT asks for an optional phone number, and lets people skip the optional transportation question. Editable fields have a consistent, visible background across the site.
Overview of Changes
The two-step member form checks first name before moving to optional details, and the server also rejects blank or whitespace-only names. The inline newsletter box remains a quick email-only way to join, so existing newsletter funnels continue to work. Errors return next to the field and in the form summary, including when JavaScript is unavailable.
The optional transportation question no longer offers “None of these”; leaving it blank records no answer. The shared input style, newsletter field, and site search field now use the same raised surface token in light and dark themes. Phone copy says it is only for questions about membership and that updates arrive by email.
pnpm checkpassed. In a mobile browser, blank and whitespace-only first names stayed on Basic info; a valid name advanced to Optional details. The optional question displayed without a “None of these” option.Follow-ups
