Switch the Windows default audio output — headset, speakers, monitor — with one click. A small, free and open-source Windows 11 app with a native Fluent look, dark and light mode, in English and German.
- One click sets the device as the Windows default output (playback and system sounds).
- Calls too, if you like: optionally switches the default communications device as well. Microphones are never changed.
- Only the devices you use: hide everything else (HDMI outputs, virtual devices …) in Settings.
- Live updates: plugging devices in or out, and changes made elsewhere in Windows, show up immediately.
- Windows 11 design: Fluent look, uses your Windows accent color, dark (pure black), light or follow Windows.
- English and German, following the Windows display language or chosen in Settings.
- High DPI: sharp at 100 %, 125 %, 150 %, 200 % and across monitors with different scaling.
- Keyboard and screen reader friendly: Tab and arrow keys, F5 to refresh, Esc to close Settings; proper names and roles for Narrator.
- Remembers its window position and size.
- Portable and private: no installer, no admin rights, no network access, no telemetry. Settings live in
%LOCALAPPDATA%\AudioOutputSelector\settings.xml.

- Download
AudioOutputSelector.zipfrom the latest release. - Unzip it completely (keep
AudioOutputSelector.exe.confignext to the EXE). - Run
AudioOutputSelector.exe.
Requirements: Windows 10/11 x64 with .NET Framework 4.8 (already part of Windows 11). Windows SmartScreen may warn about an unknown publisher because the EXE is not code-signed; choose More info → Run anyway or build it yourself.
No SDK or Visual Studio needed — the C# compiler that ships with Windows (.NET Framework 4.8) is enough:
.\Build.ps1 # builds AudioOutputSelector.exe
.\Build.ps1 -Test # builds and runs the automated tests (42 checks)AOS reads output endpoints through the Windows Core Audio API (IMMDeviceEnumerator, IMMNotificationClient) and sets the default device through the IPolicyConfig interface that the Windows sound settings use as well. It only switches the defaults; apps that use a fixed device of their own must be changed inside that app.
