Problem launching ComfyUI with Stability Matrix after updates #1510

Closed

Description

@RioMetal33

Package

ComfyUI

When did the issue occur?

Installing the Package

What GPU / hardware type are you using?

i7-13700K, 32 Gb RAM, NVIDIA RTX 4070 12Gb VRAM, Windows 11

What happened?

I updated ComfyUI to v0.7.0 and Stability Matrix to v2.15.5 (stable) today.
Since the update, when I try to launch ComfyUI from Stability Matrix, it begins to start but then shuts down right away.
I laso downgraded ComfyUI to the v0.6.0 and it still gives the same problem, while with the previous version of Stability Matrix it worked correctly.

Has anyone else run into this problem or found a fix?

Thanks to who'll help me.

Hello, I imagine you've already solved your problem with comfyUI, but if not..., I can tell you how I got it working. Although I had to revert to "Stability Matrix" version 2.12.1, I think that's it... I'm not a programmer, so I might not have the knowledge or be able to explain the whole technical process well, but I'll start it in simple terms for me. Starting this January 2026, my "comfyUI" installation began to fail. Upon startup, many "Warning" messages appeared, and it also displayed this "Warning Balloon":

"Could not connect to backend: The JSON value could not be converted to "System.Collections.Generic.List`1[System.String].Path: $ | LineNumber: 0| BytePositionlnLine:7.

" The result was that it stopped working... (It froze in the browser and wouldn't work). After many tests, I decided to uninstall and reinstall it several times. It didn't solve anything. I found the latest version of "Stability Matrix," installed it, and the same thing happened to me as to you. When it's starting up, it closes automatically, without error messages or warnings. I kept installing and uninstalling several times, but nothing. As far as I understand (thanks to Copilot), the CUDA version "CU130" was being installed, and... although I can't confirm this, I'm not a programmer and I don't understand these technical processes, but the problem in that case was that "ComfyUI" wasn't working with CU130 (here, it's possible that the Copilot AI isn't updated and this isn't true, but for me it was enough... and I went back to my old version... which I hadn't uninstalled it yet (because I still had other packages installed there, "Forge," "Fooocus," etc., and perhaps that was the conflict for me... two versions of Stability Matrix, in different folders, but on the same disk... I don't know...), but I went back to my previous version... It also took me quite a while to install and uninstall "ComfyUI" again in my previous version, because I wasn't doing a "clean" installation of "ComfyUI," and that's because there are residual files within our system... (perhaps you already knew this... I didn't...) Inside "Users/AppData/Roaming" (I wrote this from memory and I don't know if the folder names are spelled correctly, but this is the approximate address for "Windows" (10 in my case, I imagine it's the same for Windows 11), in short, in "Roaming" there is a "Stability Matrix" folder, which stores previous records. You must completely delete this folder. "Stability Matrix" (or at least extract it to your "Desktop" or another location outside of "Roaming" just in case, and try installing "ComfyUI" again). I completely deleted it, and it didn't cause any errors with any of the "Forge" or "Fooocus" packages I already had installed. Furthermore, this folder will be recreated when you open "Stability Matrix" or use or install any package. (I should mention that "inference" doesn't work for me... although I think it only worked the first time I installed "comfyUI," and I haven't used it much... I think it has something to do with the error I showed you above....)

When you delete that "Stability Matrix" folder from ".../Roaming" and reinstall "ComfyUI," a clean installation of "ComfyUI" is created as if it were the first time. I should also mention that for me, this installation always happens "without "GPU"—that is, even though when I reinstall "ComfyUI" from scratch, it recognizes my graphics card, and even though I specify that I want to install the "CUDA" version in the "ComfyUI" package installer, in "Stability Matrix," it always installs the "CPU" version (NOT GPU). This has always happened to me. I have an Nvidia RTX 3060 12GB VRAM graphics card and 32GB of RAM (still on Windows 10), but it always installs the "CPU" version, and furthermore, since it hasn't installed the "GPU" version, it throws the typical error at startup saying that compatibility with "pytorch" wasn't found, and it DOESN'T WORK. Perhaps this won't happen to you, and everything will work perfectly after a clean installation of "ComfyUI"...

But, if you also encounter the "pytorch and cuda incompatibility" error (I don't remember exactly what the error says, but it's something like it can't read cuda... or similar)..., and for this error, I already have the solution, because it happened to me before, and it is...; Every time I updated "ComfyUI" in its Start Panel (every time an "Update" notification appeared) and ran the update, the CUDA connection would break, and I'd get the same incompatibility error with "PyTorch"... I imagine you already know how to fix this error, but I'll tell you in case you didn't (I doubt it), or if it might help someone else. To fix the compatibility problem with "PyTorch," you need to navigate to the disk where you have the Stability Matrix version installed (even if it's the portable version), and there, you need to navigate to your "ComfyUI" folder, to "venv/script" ("Z:...\STABILITY_MATRIX\Data\Packages\ComfyUI\venv\Scripts"), and open a command prompt. (I do it this way:)

I uninstall the current version of PyTorch by adding the following command within the command prompt. Using the command prompt (CMD), run the following script:

"pip uninstall -y torch torchvision torchaudio"

This uninstalls PyTorch, leaving a clean installation ready for reinstallation. (In my case, if I don't uninstall it first and try to install it directly, I get a warning that a version is already installed... and everything remains the same, so I recommend uninstalling it first.)

Now you need to reinstall PyTorch, along with the "CUDA" version (cuxxx) that your PC supports. This could be: cu121, cu124 (these were older, stable versions), or cu130 (the most recent version, which gave me the error of not starting and closing before loading the interface). In my case, the "CUDA" version that works for me is cu128, but this may depend on your specific Nvidia card processor. To reinstall everything, simply change the "CUDA" version at the end of the... Try the "cuXXX" script, or try different versions of CUDA (install and uninstall until you find one that works, if you don't know which version you have). Again, in the command prompt, enter the following PyTorch + CUDA installation script in the directory you opened earlier, "Stability_Matrix/..../ComfyUI/venv/script>":

pip install torch torchvision torchaudio --index-url https://download.pytorch.org/whl/cu128

If everything has worked correctly, ComfyUI should start properly. Perhaps it's not the most visually appealing version of ComfyUI (mine doesn't have the "Graphics Card" or "RAM" bars that I see in other interfaces), but ComfyUI is up-to-date and works perfectly. Perhaps it will be until the next update. You'll have to repeat the process... But for this case, I also have another, faster solution that might be useful in the previous step if you have doubts or are afraid to uninstall "pytorch"... (although nothing will happen if you do what I've explained...)

This second method is to "force" the installation of "CUDA" WITHOUT HAVING TO UNINSTALL ANYTHING FIRST. Simply open the command prompt (CMD) to the previous directory of your ComfyUI script folder (..../ComfyUI/venv/script, that is, the same one as before), and then directly write the "Forced Reinstallation" script. **However, for this method, YOU NEED TO BE SURE WHICH VERSION OF "CUDA" (cuXXX) you have installed, so you DON'T INSTALL A DIFFERENT ONE. THIS COULD CAUSE PROBLEMS It could cause other problems... That's why I only use this second option when my PyTorch-CUDA connection has broken after each Comfy update... because I already know which version I need to install. In that case, this is the Forced Reinstallation Script:

    pip install --force-reinstall torch --index-url https://download.pytorch.org/whl/cu128

That's it. This would reinstall the PyTorch + CU128 dependencies (in my case), and everything goes back to normal. Use this last process only when you're very sure of what you're doing. OK...

This process has worked for me many times, but of course, you might have different errors or problems than you do. If you find a better option, go for it. I'm not a programmer, but I've done this process many times, and it's worked fine when I've used the correct packages (trial and error). But again, I'm not a programmer. If you can't find a better solution, try this one, as it's the only one that's worked well for me.

I hope this helps someone. Good luck,y Un Saludo. Jose
