Motivation

  • Make content tables easier to read and navigate when they contain many rows by providing a polished, compact presentation and scrollable viewport.
  • Improve visual professionalism with clearer row / header styling, frozen key context (sticky headers / first column) and hover feedback.
  • Add lightweight client-side filtering and accessible keyboard support to let readers find rows quickly without rebuilding the site.

Description

  • Add static/js/table-enhancements.js which wraps content tables inside a responsive data-table card, creates an accessible scroll region, and automatically enhances tables found under #content while allowing opt-out via the table-plain class.
  • For tables with 15+ rows the script adds a toolbar with a live client-side filter input and an entry-count display, and annotates the scroller with ARIA attributes and focusability.
  • Add table styling and layout in static/css/custom.css to render the new card-like table container, zebra striping, hover states, sticky header, frozen first column, constrained scrolling for large tables, keyboard focus styles, and responsive toolbar behavior.
  • Load the enhancement script site-wide by adding a deferred <script> to layouts/partials/headers.html so the behavior is applied without blocking rendering.

Testing

  • Ran node --check static/js/table-enhancements.js to validate the new script and it succeeded.
  • Ran repository checks including git diff --check to ensure no obvious whitespace or diff issues and they passed.
  • Attempted a full local preview and asset tooling but hugo was not installed in the environment so a rendered preview was not produced.
  • Attempted to initialize the theme submodule and browser tooling (git submodule update --init --recursive, npx for screenshot tooling) but network access to registries/submodules was blocked (HTTP 403), so full visual verification and screenshots could not be generated.
