IT Governance & Legacy System Modernization Strategy

Master of Technology in Computer Software Development — Speciality: Software Architecture
Design: 2023 | Portfolio Update: 2026

🎯 Executive Summary

This project presents a comprehensive architectural audit and modernization roadmap for a US-based logistics leader. The mission was to improve the legacy instrastructure into a scalable, secure, adn customer-centric ecosystem. to achieve this, the modernization focused on four key pillars:

  • Operational Cost Optimization: Streamlining the infrastructure through a dedicated Extranet sub-domain to reduce overhead and maintenance of the legacy core.
  • Process Automation: Minimizing manual interventions by implementing automated workflows within the new customer portal.
  • Service Excellence: Improving Quality of Service (QoS) and response times via a high-performance ASP.NET stack and a native iOS application
  • Stakeholder Governance: Simplifying the management of internal and external parties through a structured IT Governance framework (inspired by TOGAF).

🏗️ The Architectural Challenge

Legacy system complexity made direct modification risky.

Core Requirements:

  • Security: Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA/2FA) and RBAC (Role-Based Access Control).

  • Compliance: Full GDPR and international regulatory alignment.

  • Compatibility: Native iOS application and responsive web portal.

    ⚠️ Key Constraints

  • High Traffic Volume: System designed specifically for top-tier partners and suppliers.
  • No-Disruption Policy: The legacy core (imposing thousands of pages) remains untouched to avoid operational downtime.
  • Multi-Environment: Dual access via Responsive Web (ASP.NET) and Native Mobile (iOS).

🛠️ Key Architectural Decisions

Based on the technical audit, I designed a side-by-side modernization strategy:

  • Extranet Sub-domain: Implementation of a decoupled portal to minimize risk to the legacy core.
  • Tech Stack: Leveraging ASP.NET for the web infrastructure and a Native iOS application for high-volume clients.
  • Security-First Design: Mandatory Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA/2FA) and RBAC (Role-Based Access Control).
  • Global Compliance: Strict alignment with GDPR and international logistics regulations.

⚙️ Strategy & Execution

  • Stakeholder Orchestration: Acting as the bridge between the IT consulting firm and the client's VP of IT to ensure alignment between technical delivery and business expectations.
  • Strategic Methodology: Implementation of a Change Management protocol and feasibility analysis to ensure seamless transition from legacy to modern infrastructure.
  • Risk Mitigation: Proactive management of critical project factors:
    • Business: Budget control and strict deadline adherence.
    • Technical: Database migration integrity and iOS ecosystem longevity.
    • Human: User adoption and training strategy.

📂Deliverables

The repository is structured to reflect the standard lifecycle of an architectural mission:

  1. Functional Specifications: In-depth audit of the legacy system, gap analysis, and definition of the new Extranet scope.
  1. Stakeholder & Governance Plan: Detailed risk matrix (Criticality/Impact), resource allocation, and communication protocols based on TOGAF principles.
  1. Executive Solutions Pitch: A high-level technical synthesis designed for C-level stakeholders, focusing on ROI and system resilience.
