[Feature] Playback speed presets above 2.0x #1913

Open

Description

What problem does this solve?

The playback speed sheet tops out at 2.0x. The presets are 0.5x, 0.65x, 0.8x, 1.0x, 1.25x, 1.5x, 1.75x and 2.0x, and there is no way to select anything higher — there is no custom speed input anywhere in the app, and the speed stepping actions (speed up / speed down / reset) operate over the same fixed list.

This is limiting for the cases where people normally want to go faster:

  • Audiobooks, lectures and podcasts, where 2.5x–3x is a common listening speed.
  • Skimming or re-watching content you have already seen, where 3x–4x is useful.
  • Filler episodes, recaps and intros, where 5x is often handy.

Other Jellyfin clients and general-purpose players let you go past 2x, so users coming from those hit this ceiling straight away.

Nothing technical is stopping it: the playback backend already supports arbitrary rates. The cap is only the hardcoded preset list.

Proposed solution

Add larger presets — at minimum 2.5x, 3.0x, 3.5x, 4.0x and 5.0x.

Even better would be making the preset list user-configurable in playback settings (a comma-separated list, or a multi-select), so people can choose their own set instead of the app imposing a global ceiling. A "custom speed" entry in the sheet would also solve it.

When going above 2x, it would be worth forcing audio pitch correction on and preferring scaletempo2 over the default scaletempo, since audio quality at 3x and above is noticeably better. Audio naturally degrades at very high rates regardless of algorithm, but that is expected and not a reason to cap it at 2x.

Platform

All / Not platform-specific

Server

Both / Not server-specific

Alternatives considered

Loading a custom mpv.conf containing speed=2.5 does change the actual playback rate, but it does not add anything to the sheet: the UI still shows 0.5x–2.0x, and the displayed speed no longer matches the real one. It is also a per-machine workaround rather than a setting, so it does not help on other platforms.

    Thanks for the report, @PainKiller0x0.

Before anyone can pick this up it needs a little more from you, so it has been labelled Missing Template.

This issue skipped the issue form

It was opened without one of the forms, so the fields that say which app version, platform, server and media this involves are all missing.

The forms also decide how an issue gets labelled, and those labels are what tell this bot whether to ask you for a screenshot or a diagnostic log. Skipping the form means nobody was prompted for the one thing the report actually needs.

Please open a fresh one from New issue and pick the form that fits, then this can be closed as a duplicate. If you would rather not start over, answer the form's fields in a comment below, each under a heading named after the field, such as ### Moonfin version, ### Platform and ### Server, and they will be picked up.

    • Bug: Playback for video or audio, which needs a diagnostic log
    • Bug: UI for anything visual, which needs a screenshot or recording
    • Bug: Seerr for requests and discovery
    • Feature request for something new

Each label comes off automatically once that piece is sorted.
