Description

Adds two initialization checks: one that traverses the USB topology and checks for link speeds, and another that performs a quick speed check only over USB links.

Currently warns if the negotiated link speed is below USB 3 (5000 Mb/s), and logs detailed information from both tests locally on the server when using OOB USB local mode.

Type of change

  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • Documentation update

Testing

  • New automated tests
  • Manually tested that port speed and speed test results work and make sense

Checklist

  • I have read and understood the contribution guidelines
  • I have run the linter and formatter with SKIP=check-copyright-year pre-commit run --all-files

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The USB-local startup path now records USB topology and transfer results in per-start reports. It confirms headset wakefulness before measuring transfer and can block browser launch under the block policy. During preserved-browser recovery, it refreshes link status without repeating the transfer measurement. The changes also expand the end-of-file-fixer exclusion and repository guidance for LFS SVG assets.

The USB health checks work in the normal path. In a narrow case, cancelling startup while the transfer measurement is finishing may not stop startup, and shutdown could hang. Two earlier report and link-probe concerns have not yet been confirmed as fixed. These issues are bounded, but they warrant a quick follow-up before merge.

Summary

Reviewed f5acb9f8d04e3ef38bf8fcc51cafe16e1a581018, including separate readability, conciseness, and correctness reviews. The objective inferred from the title and documentation is to inspect the selected USB link, measure pre-browser host-to-headset transfer, require confirmed wakefulness, and retain useful partial reports without disturbing a surviving browser during reconnect. The normal path meets that objective, and the distinction between wall-clock goodput and response-body rate is clearly explained. Readability is generally good; conciseness needs only a small optional cleanup. Failure handling needs fixes before merge.

Legend: 🚫 Blocker · 💡 Suggestion · 🔍 Nit

Finding
🚫 src/python/isaaccapture/cloudxr/usb_health.py:323 — Fallback cleanup can swallow cancellation. Cancel during stdin.drain(), then let the cleanup read exceed 0.5 seconds: the cleanup TimeoutError replaces CancelledError, and measure_transfer() returns unsupported. Reproduced against the actual module on Python 3.12. Under warn, execution can continue into browser automation after shutdown or recovery-budget cancellation. Preserve the original cancellation while terminating and reaping the child.
🚫 src/python/isaaccapture/cloudxr/oob_teleop_lifecycle.py:599 — Link-probe timeout escapes the warn policy. Confirmed that subprocess.TimeoutExpired bypasses this handler, interrupting startup or USB repair instead of recording unknown link health. Already raised by CodeRabbit; independently reproduced.
💡 src/python/isaaccapture/cloudxr/oob_teleop_lifecycle.py:1618 — Reverse-setup failure loses structured error history. This replacement changes errors from structured records to strings, so later consumers cannot consistently read it. Already raised by CodeRabbit; still present. Use the existing wait-recording helper.
🚫 src/python/isaaccapture/cloudxr/usb_health.py:423 — New production helpers lack required docstrings. The global named-function/method documentation rule applies; the repository's brief-comment guidance can be satisfied with short docstrings. In particular, UsbHealthReport.update() should explain whole-section replacement, synchronous persistence/pruning, and I/O failures. Other new report/lifecycle helpers also lack purpose docstrings. Tests are exempt. CodeRabbit already raised broad docstring coverage; this finding is scoped to new production code.
🔍 src/python/isaaccapture/cloudxr/oob_teleop_lifecycle.py:687 — The unattempted-transfer result and WAITING_FOR_AWAKE recording are duplicated in _confirm_usb_awake() at line 773. A small shared recording helper would keep those report semantics in one place while retaining both checks. Optional.

Validation

Python 3.12 focused run: 20 passed, 3 deselected, using a namespace shim to bypass unrelated unbuilt native extensions. The initial full focused run had three Windows failures involving Linux-style topology paths and directory fsync; Linux report/topology validation remains outstanding. Both the cancellation and ADB-timeout findings were separately reproduced with controlled doubles around the actual production functions. Ruff and formatting passed in the full pre-commit attempt, but that run did not pass overall: local hooks could not launch python3, and REUSE failed with a Windows multiprocessing handle error. No headset hardware validation was performed.

Actionables (for bots — copy-paste-ready for AI)

Agent-generated suggestions, not human-vetted obligations. Skip anything wrong, already addressed, or not worth the churn.

  • src/python/isaaccapture/cloudxr/usb_health.py:323 — Preserve CancelledError across bounded fallback child cleanup. Add a regression that cancels during drain while stdout cleanup stalls; require cancellation to propagate and the child to be reaped.
  • src/python/isaaccapture/cloudxr/oob_teleop_lifecycle.py:599 — Catch subprocess.TimeoutExpired as a probe failure; test that default warn startup and preserved-browser repair continue when link inspection times out.
  • src/python/isaaccapture/cloudxr/oob_teleop_lifecycle.py:1618 — Record reverse-setup failure through _record_usb_wait("REBUILDING_USB", type(exc).__name__) and update the decision without replacing errors; test that earlier records survive and all items retain the structured shape.
  • src/python/isaaccapture/cloudxr/usb_health.py:423 — Add brief purpose/contract docstrings to new undocumented production helpers and report/lifecycle methods, especially update(); leave test helpers exempt and follow the repository's short, non-narrative comment style.
  • src/python/isaaccapture/cloudxr/oob_teleop_lifecycle.py:687 — Optionally factor the duplicate not-awake transfer/wait recording into one focused helper without removing either wake guard.

Summary

Fresh review of 143a86631d1379f9f65af047229fa0e8df4b9ce2, with independent readability, conciseness, and correctness reviews. The objective inferred from the title and documentation is to qualify the selected USB transport before browser launch through topology, confirmed wakefulness, and a three-second transfer, retain private partial reports, and refresh passive evidence during browser-preserving reconnect. The normal path meets that objective. Naming and metric explanations are clear, and the added fallback cleanup is justified. The earlier link-timeout, structured-error-history, and fallback-cancellation findings are addressed. One documentation-standard issue, one cleanup reliability suggestion, and one optional conciseness nit remain.

Legend: 🚫 Blocker · 💡 Suggestion · 🔍 Nit

Finding
🚫 src/python/isaaccapture/cloudxr/usb_health.py:180 and src/python/isaaccapture/cloudxr/oob_teleop_lifecycle.py:567 — Required production purpose docstrings remain missing. The global guidelines require docstrings for named production definitions; brief purpose/contract comments satisfy the repository's style too. This includes the low-level topology helpers, _adb_shell, report constructor/pruning, and six new lifecycle report/policy helpers. UsbHealthReport.update() now documents its contract correctly. The broader coverage concern was already raised by CodeRabbit and the earlier Codex review; this is scoped to the still-undocumented production definitions. Tests are exempt.
💡 src/python/isaaccapture/cloudxr/usb_health.py:199 — A second cancellation can interrupt child cleanup. The cleanup communicate() awaits are unshielded. If the child has not exited after terminate(), another cancellation escapes before escalation/reaping. Reproduced against this function with a real Linux child ignoring SIGTERM: after two cancellations it remained alive; the reproduction then explicitly killed and reaped it. A recovery deadline followed by service shutdown can deliver successive cancellations. Apply the bounded, cancellation-resistant cleanup approach already used by the fallback. This is a reliability gap, not a reproduced browser-launch regression. Distinct from CodeRabbit's nearby ProcessLookupError finding, which is fixed.
🔍 src/python/isaaccapture/cloudxr/oob_teleop_lifecycle.py:744 — The unattempted-transfer result and WAITING_FOR_AWAKE recording duplicate the same reporting in _confirm_usb_awake() at line 828. One small recording helper could keep those semantics consistent while retaining both wake guards. Optional; already raised by the earlier Codex review.

Validation

All 40 focused USB health tests passed on Python 3.12 under local Ubuntu WSL, using native Linux temporary storage and a namespace shim to bypass unrelated unbuilt native extensions. The repeated-cancellation finding was independently reproduced with a real subprocess and cleaned up afterward. The full local SKIP=check-copyright-year pre-commit run --all-files also passed on a disposable native Linux checkout. Visible PR CI includes passing Ubuntu builds and CloudXR tests for Python 3.11–3.13. No headset hardware validation was performed.

Actionables (for bots — copy-paste-ready for AI)

Agent-generated suggestions, not human-vetted obligations. Skip anything wrong, already addressed, or not worth the churn.

  • src/python/isaaccapture/cloudxr/usb_health.py:65 — Add brief purpose docstrings to _read, _number, _pci, _node, _adb_shell (180), UsbHealthReport.__init__ (436), and _prune (527); document subprocess ownership/cancellation where useful.
  • src/python/isaaccapture/cloudxr/oob_teleop_lifecycle.py:567 — Add brief purpose docstrings to _ensure_usb_report, _record_usb_wait (592), _link_outcome (612), _persist_usb_health (849), _record_usb_event (857), and _usb_launch_allowed (865). Keep tests exempt and avoid narrating obvious code blocks.
  • src/python/isaaccapture/cloudxr/usb_health.py:199 — Shield bounded terminate/kill/reap cleanup against recurring cancellation, then propagate cancellation; add a regression that cancels again while a child remains alive during cleanup and asserts it is reaped before return.
  • src/python/isaaccapture/cloudxr/oob_teleop_lifecycle.py:744 — Optionally share the not-awake transfer/wait recording with the branch at 828 without removing either wake guard.

Summary

Adds pre-browser USB-local health checks: topology/link-speed inspection via /sys/bus/usb/devices, a 3-second host-to-headset transfer measurement over the existing HTTPS static listener (with an ADB-only fallback when device curl is unavailable), and a private, atomically-written JSON report per session (hashed+salted serial, no raw identifiers, 20-report/14-day retention). Wired into OobLifecycle's state machine as new states (CHECKING_USB_LINK, CHECKING_USB_WAKE, CHECKING_USB_TRANSFER, USB_HEALTH_BLOCKED, etc.) with a warn/block/off policy knob. Overall quality is high: careful cancellation-safe subprocess handling (shield+loop pattern for cleanup, consistent with patterns already established elsewhere in this codebase), real security hygiene (O_NOFOLLOW salt reads, O_EXCL atomic writes, 0o600/0o700 perms, fsync+dir-fsync for durability), and thorough tests (36 new tests, including a real race test for the salt-file creation path and an explicit assertion that the raw serial never appears in the topology JSON).

Legend: 🚫 Blocker · 💡 Suggestion · 🔍 Nit

Finding
💡 .pre-commit-config.yaml:12, AGENTS.md:24-26 — both reference examples/vehicle_teleop/assets/vehicle_teleop_flow.svg, which doesn't exist anywhere in the repo (not on main, not added by this PR). Looks like scope bleed from an unrelated branch/rebase rather than something this PR's own USB-health work needs.
💡 oob_teleop_lifecycle.py — usb_health_policy defaults to "warn" and is a real constructor parameter, but the only production construction site (wss.py:720-1348) never passes it, and no env var/CLI flag sets it either. So "block" mode (and "off") can only be reached from Python call sites like tests — there's currently no way for an operator to actually configure it, despite the PR description and docs describing it as a configurable policy.
🔍 oob_teleop_lifecycle.py::_check_usb_transfer — the if self._usb_wake_confirmed is not True: raise guard is unreachable today: the only caller (run()) always calls _confirm_usb_awake() immediately before, which itself raises on any non-Awake outcome. Harmless defensive code, but worth a one-line comment noting it's a guard against future callers rather than a live path, per the repo's "say it once, briefly" comment style.

Actionables (for bots — copy-paste-ready for AI)

  • .pre-commit-config.yaml:12, AGENTS.md:24-26 — confirm whether examples/vehicle_teleop/assets/vehicle_teleop_flow.svg is actually part of this change; if not, drop both edits from this PR.
  • wss.py construction site for OobLifecycle — wire usb_health_policy from an env var (e.g. TELEOP_USB_HEALTH_POLICY) or CLI flag so block/off are reachable in production, or document that warn is intentionally the only shipped mode for now.
