Description

Adds a vendor-neutral tactile schema whose segments are bound to a skeleton through registered profiles. Three commits:

  1. Skeleton profiles (skeleton_binding.fbs, schema/skeleton_binding.hpp). SkeletonBinding names each rigid segment of a device in a skeleton profile (SkeletonProfileRef{id, version}), optionally pinned to an asset by its RFC 6920 ni:///sha-256; digest. Registered profiles: openxr.hand v1 (HandJoint names, requires a side), openxr.body.bd v1 (BodyJoint names) and urdf.link v1 (URDF link names, requires an asset). An unregistered id reads as a generic binding. validate_skeleton_binding() (C++ and Python) and check_skeleton_asset() / asset_digest() (Python) check bindings and assets.
  2. Tactile schema and tracker (tactile_metadata.fbs, tactile.fbs, trackers.toml). TactileMetadata (device, segments with bind poses, taxels with 52 B LBS entries, optional taxel areas, binding, channels, extensions) is published as the metadata of the generated TactileTracker; TactileData carries per-taxel normal force, shear force, raw readings, taxel state and an optional sequence. validate_tactile_metadata() / validate_tactile_data() implement the rules in docs/source/references/tactile_schema.rst; Python per-taxel fields are NumPy views.
  3. Example (examples/tactile). A feeder publishes a mock fingertip pad bound to openxr.hand; a printer reads it through TactileTracker, prints the metadata once and the first and last taxel once per second. The README holds only the run steps.

Sizes: 26 segments and 1000 taxels encode to about 56 KB of metadata (limit 68,864 B); a 1000-taxel frame with normal, shear and state is about 13 KB (max_flatbuffer_size = 32768).

Not included, for a follow-up: session-level associations between a tactile tracker and the tracker that poses its skeleton, and a retargeting-engine source node that skins taxels from HandPose.

Type of change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to change)
  • Documentation update

Testing

On macOS (arm64), Python 3.12:

  • schema_tests: all 131 cases pass, including the new [skeleton_binding] and [tactile] cases and [schema_conform] with the three new goldens.
  • tests/python/core/schema: 218 passed, including test_skeleton_binding.py and test_tactile.py.
  • Full ctest: 314/321 pass; the 7 failures are macOS environment issues unrelated to this change (AF_UNIX socket path length in logging_config, no macOS wheel for wuji-sdk, reuse encoding module in packaging_test_license_policy, Linux-only process checks in cloudxr tests).
  • Docs: sphinx-build -W --keep-going succeeds.
  • Example: configured with BUILD_EXAMPLES=ON and installed; mock_metadata(), mock_frame() and the printer's output functions were exercised offline (metadata and frames validate). The live feeder-to-printer run was not executed, since this host has no CloudXR/OpenXR runtime.

A device that describes rigid segments needs to say which skeleton those
segments are posed by at run time. SkeletonBinding names each segment in
a registered skeleton profile, optionally pinned to an asset identified
by its RFC 6920 SHA-256 name.

Three profiles are registered: openxr.hand (HandJoint names, needs a
side), openxr.body.bd (BodyJoint names) and urdf.link (link names of the
URDF in the asset). An unregistered profile id reads as a generic
binding. validate_skeleton_binding() checks a binding against its device
and profile in C++ and Python; check_skeleton_asset() checks the asset
bytes and, for urdf.link, that every name is a link of the URDF.

A tactile device publishes a TactileMetadata once per session as the
metadata of the generated TactileTracker, and a TactileData every frame.

TactileMetadata describes the device (vendor, model, side, rate,
calibration), its rigid segments with their bind poses, its taxels with
their poses and four-slot linear blend skinning over the segments, the
SkeletonBinding that names the segments in a skeleton, the TactileData
vectors it fills, and vendor extensions. TactileData carries per-taxel
normal force, shear force, raw readings and taxel state, and an optional
frame counter.

validate_tactile_metadata() and validate_tactile_data() check the rules
in docs/source/references/tactile_schema.rst, in C++ and Python; the
Python TactileMetadata constructor raises ValueError on the first one
broken. Per-taxel fields read in Python as NumPy views into the buffer.

The feeder publishes a mock left index fingertip pad: a TactileMetadata
with two segments bound to the OpenXR hand joints INDEX_DISTAL and
INDEX_TIP, and a TactileData frame at --rate. The printer reads them
through a TactileTracker on a DeviceIOSession, prints the metadata once
and the first and last taxel of the latest frame once per second.

Review in Change Stack →

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds FlatBuffers schemas and validation APIs for skeleton bindings and tactile metadata and frames. It exposes these APIs through Python bindings and adds tests for serialization and validation. It also adds a tactile DeviceIO tracker, feeder and printer examples, and documentation for the schemas, tracker, and examples.

Calling validate_skeleton_binding from Python with an empty name list, a segment count of zero, and a registered hand or body profile can crash the interpreter instead of returning an error. Normal tactile metadata validation is unaffected. A one-line guard resolves this, so the change is mergeable with that follow-up.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Guard against a null names before the profile-name loop.

The name check at Line 196 dereferences *names without checking it. names is null when the binding has no segment_names vector. The FlatBuffers object API packs an empty std::vector<std::string> as an absent field, so an empty name list also produces a null vector.

This input reaches the loop:

  • segment_count == 0
  • segment_names empty or absent
  • a registered profile with defined names (openxr.hand with side LEFT/RIGHT, or openxr.body.bd)

The earlier count check passes because 0 == 0. The loop then dereferences null. The public Python binding exposes this path directly, so validate_skeleton_binding(SkeletonBinding([], profile=SkeletonProfileRef("openxr.hand", 1)), 0, BodySide.LEFT) crashes the interpreter instead of returning an error string. The tactile path cannot trigger it, because validate_tactile_metadata requires at least one segment.
