Normal release (minor version)

  1. Make sure your local main branch is up to date w.r.t. GitHub:
git switch main && git pull

  2. Use bump-my-version to drop the -dev postfix from the version and add a new tag:
    bump-my-version bump release
  3. Check that the version matches your expectations:
    git show

  4. Push the commit to GitHub:
    git push

  5. Push the version tag too:
    git push --tags

  6. Wait for GitHub Actions jobs to complete. The version tag should trigger a distribution and Docker builds that are uploaded to PyPI and Quay.io.
  7. In GitHub Releases tab, turn the tag into a release and add release notes.
  8. Close the milestone corresponding to the release and create a new one for the next release.
  9. Prepare the main branch for the next development release (increment the second part of the version number and add a -dev suffix without creating a new tag):
    bump-my-version bump minor --no-tag

  10. Check with git that the new version number matches your expectations.
    git show

  11. Push the commit to GitHub:
    git push

  12. Announce the release.
