Summary

A static mini app, in web/season-countdown/, that counts down to the exact moment of the next equinox or solstice. It also offers an iCalendar feed that people can subscribe to.

  • Countdown: shows days, hours, minutes and seconds to the next season change, the moment in the viewer's local time zone, progress through the current season, and a note for the first 24 hours after a change.
  • Hemisphere toggle: switches the season names between Northern and Southern. The page guesses the hemisphere from the browser's time zone and remembers the choice.
  • Calendar: one-click subscribe links for Apple/Outlook desktop (webcal://), Google Calendar and Outlook.com, plus a feed URL to copy. The links are built from the page's own URL, so nothing is tied to one host.
  • Math: seasons.js uses Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms, ch. 27 (mean instant plus 24 periodic terms) with a ΔT correction. Results for 2024–2027 are within a minute of USNO values.
  • Feeds: build-ics.mjs generates them from the same module. UIDs are stable, and REFRESH-INTERVAL/X-PUBLISHED-TTL are set to one week.

Notes

  • The feeds use a .txt extension because the mini-app host rejects .ics files. Calendar clients parse the content, not the extension.
  • The feeds currently cover 2025–2050. To extend them, raise LAST_YEAR and rebuild.
  • This is unrelated to the C++ app and touches no build or CI files.

Testing

  • Compared computed moments against published USNO equinox and solstice times for 2024–2027. All are within a minute.
  • Rendered the page in headless Chromium at desktop width (light theme) and at 375px (dark theme, Sydney time zone, so the Southern Hemisphere was auto-selected). No console errors and no horizontal overflow.
