Nick Johnson

Engineer + Author + Designer + Silly Goose — I like making things.

GitHub · Email · Résumé

Background

Spent 7 years at Cisco writing and maintaining 150+ technical tools for network engineers. After that, I wrote a book, traveled the world, and I'm now integrating my engineering background with design skills to create better user experiences.

What I Build With

Backend: Python, Perl, SQL, Django
Frontend: JavaScript, jQuery, Bootstrap, D3
Currently Learning: Swift, iPhone/Mac, Graphic Design

Philosophy

Good software needs three things: it works, it's maintainable, and people actually want to use it. I bring engineering rigor, clear communication (writer), and visual thinking (designer) to every project.

📫 Open to opportunities where engineering meets creativity — full-stack roles, dev tools, or anything that benefits from cross-disciplinary thinking.

Selected Work

Alarming Routines

iPhone · SwiftUI, Core Data, AppKit

I have tried hundreds of routine apps and quickly ignored them once I finished set up. Timers and alarms simply get turned off because I am busy and focused on something else. I needed an alarm I couldn't blow off, only snooze. No one else had made that for me so I made my own.

02 — Secure Vault

iPhone · SwiftUI, Core Data, AppKit

An encrypted file storage vault. Other apps expected a subscription for a UI so poorly implemented they are near unusable. Getting that UI to work right in all the edge cases did take a couple weeks for me but I'm pretty happy with the results.
