OceanStream Physics & Biogeochem

Interactive 3D visualization of global ocean Essential Climate Variables (ECVs)

Version License

Explore physical and biogeochemical ocean data on a responsive 3D globe. Data is sourced from the Copernicus Marine Service and updated daily.

Features

  • 3D Globe Visualization - Explore the oceans on a rotating globe with smooth zooming from global to local scales
  • 6 Ocean Variables - Sea Surface Temperature, Sea Ice, Sea Level, Chlorophyll, Water Clarity, and True-Color Ocean Imagery
  • Multi-layer Display - View multiple variables simultaneously with adjustable transparency
  • Time Navigation - Browse daily data with a timeline slider, play animations, and control playback speed
  • Point Queries - Click anywhere to see values, time series, and climatological statistics
  • Data Download - Download subsets in NetCDF, GeoTIFF, or CSV formats for your own analysis
  • Customizable Colors - Choose from scientific colormaps and adjust value ranges

Available Variables

Variable What It Shows Resolution
Sea Surface Temperature (SST) Ocean surface temperature from satellites and buoys ~6 km
Sea Ice Concentration (SIC) Percentage of ocean covered by ice in polar regions 10 km
Sea Level Anomaly (SLA) Height of the sea surface relative to the long-term average ~28 km
Chlorophyll-a (CHL) Concentration of phytoplankton, the base of the marine food web 4 km
Diffuse Attenuation (Kd490) Water clarity, how quickly light fades with depth 4 km
Ocean Color RGB True-color-like imagery showing phytoplankton blooms and sediment 4 km

How to Use

Navigation

  • Rotate the globe - Click and drag
  • Zoom - Scroll wheel, or use +/- buttons
  • Switch to 2D view - Click the 2D/3D toggle

Time Controls

  • Select a date - Use the timeline slider at the bottom
  • Play animation - Click the play button to animate through time
  • Adjust speed - Use 0.5x, 1x, 2x, or 4x playback speeds
  • Jump dates - Use arrow keys for previous/next day

Layers

  • Toggle variables - Click layer buttons in the sidebar to show/hide
  • Adjust opacity - Use the opacity slider in Settings
  • Change colormap - Click the color scale controls

Point Queries

  • Get a value - Click anywhere on the data layer
  • View time series - Click the chart icon in the info panel
  • See statistics - Monthly means and trends are shown when available

Download Data

  1. Open the Download panel from the sidebar
  2. Draw a bounding box on the globe, or enter coordinates
  3. Select date range and format (NetCDF, GeoTIFF, or CSV)
  4. Click Download

Data Sources

All data is sourced from the Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS), the European Union's operational oceanography service.
