What & why

The Changes tab highlights both selected commits, but the host used the older selected commit as an exclusive diff base. This left that commit's files and changes out of the list and diff.

This adds an optional includeFrom input. The host resolves the parent of the selected starting commit, or the empty tree for a root commit. Existing callers keep the current fromHash behavior. The flag reaches the file list, single-file diff, bulk diff, patch diff, and binary-side paths.

Closes #9234

How I tested it

  • bun test test/integration/git-history.integration.test.ts from packages/host-service: 8 passed, including the oldest-commit and root-commit cases.
  • bun run typecheck from packages/host-service: passed.
  • bun run typecheck from apps/desktop: passed.
  • Biome check on all 11 changed source and test files: passed.
  • bun run lint could not start on this Windows host because scripts/lint.sh requires Bash. The direct Biome check passed.
  • No CDP screenshot was captured.

Checklist

  • PR title follows conventional commits (type(scope): subject)
  • bun run lint and bun run typecheck pass (CI fails on lint warnings too)
  • "Allow edits from maintainers" is checked on fork PRs
  • I have signed the CLA (the bot asks on your first PR)

Summary by cubic

Fixes commit range diffs in the Changes tab so the oldest selected commit is actually included in the file list and diff.

Previously, range diffs used the older selected commit as an exclusive base, so that commit's own changes never appeared. This adds an optional includeFrom flag that, when set, resolves the parent of the selected starting commit (or the empty tree for a root commit) as the diff base instead. Existing callers without the flag keep the current behavior.

  • Propagates includeFrom through the file list, single-file diff, bulk diff, patch diff, and binary-side paths.
  • Adds integration tests covering an inclusive 3-commit range and a root commit as the range start.

Written for commit c9d1347. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Commit-range comparisons can now include the starting commit, so changes from the full selected range appear in file lists and diffs.
    • Inclusive ranges that start at a repository’s first commit are also supported.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

Commit range filters now carry an includeFrom option through workspace diff requests and host-service Git tasks. Inclusive ranges resolve from the parent of the oldest selected commit, with an empty-tree fallback for root commits. Integration tests cover range results and root commits.

Changes: Inclusive commit range handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Carry inclusivity through workspace diff requests
apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/v2-workspace/$workspaceId/..., apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/providers/CollectionsProvider/dashboardSidebarLocal/schema.ts
Range selection sets includeFrom. Workspace filter schemas and diff references carry the value into commit-files, diff, and patch requests. Patch grouping distinguishes requests with different includeFrom values.
Resolve inclusive commit refs
packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/git/*, packages/host-service/src/workers/tasks/git.ts, packages/host-service/test/integration/git-history.integration.test.ts
Git router inputs and worker tasks forward includeFrom to shared commit-ref resolution. When the option is enabled for a range, resolution uses the parent of fromHash, or the empty-tree hash when it has no parent. Integration tests check included range files and the root-commit case.

Resolve host-version compatibility before merging: older remote hosts silently omit the oldest selected commit. Inclusive ranges also produce incorrect results at shallow-history boundaries and omit root-commit files in SHA-256 repositories.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(git): include the oldest selected commit in ranges" matches the main change. The changeset adds an optional includeFrom flag so commit range diffs include the oldest selected commit's changes by diffing from its parent (or the empty tree for a root commit). The title follows conventional commit format and is specific, concise, and free of file lists.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's main sections. The 'What & why' section explains the problem, the includeFrom fix, and links issue #9234. The 'How I tested it' section lists the commands run, their results, and states that no CDP screenshot was captured. The checklist is present. Two checklist items are unchecked: 'bun run lint and bun run typecheck pass' is only partly done because lint could not run on the author's Windows host, and the CLA item is unchecked. The author explains the lint limitation, so the gap is documented.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #9234 requires the Changes tab to include the oldest selected commit and to use its parent, or the empty tree for a root commit, as the diff base. RangeModal sets includeFrom: true. The host and worker paths propagate the flag through file listing, single-file, bulk, patch, and binary-side operations. resolveCommitBaseRef resolves the parent and uses the empty-tree hash for a root commit. Integration tests cover an inclusive three-commit range, single-file diff content, patch output, and a root commit.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed application code propagates and resolves includeFrom for the Changes tab diff paths. The added integration tests verify the required range behavior. The type updates and cache-key update support that same input. No unrelated change is demonstrated by the reviewed summary or focused diff.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 25.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 8 functions across 11 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Migrate saved range filters so they include the oldest commit.

Saved range filters have no includeFrom value. Heal keeps them as they are, so useSidebarDiffRef still requests the exclusive range. A user who upgrades with a saved range keeps missing the oldest commit's changes until the range is selected again. The stored default needs a decision: default legacy ranges to inclusive, or keep them exclusive and document the reselect step.

Update the saved range-filter migration or defaulting logic associated with the
`includeFrom` schema so legacy range filters without this value receive the
chosen behavior: set them to inclusive to include the oldest commit, or preserve
exclusivity and explicitly document that users must reselect the range. Ensure
the behavior applies when existing saved filters are healed.

Add exclusive-range assertions for the list and patch APIs.

The new tests always pass includeFrom: true. A change that ignores the flag and always starts at the parent would still pass them. Add cases that omit includeFrom (or pass false) with fromHash set.

  • getCommitFiles and getDiffPatch: assert that the file changed only in the fromHash commit is absent from the file list and the patch.
  • getDiff: assert that oldFile.contents and newFile.contents both hold the file's content. The API returns file contents, so the file stays in the result. Do not assert its absence.

This coverage gap is a recommended refactor. The current implementation behaves correctly, and these cases protect the existing fromHash contract.

Add exclusion and parent-content checks to the inclusive-range test.

The inclusive-range test checks only that the expected files appear. It does not check that a file from before the selected range is absent. It also does not check that a file modified in the oldest selected commit shows its parent's contents on the old side. A resolver that returns EMPTY_TREE_HASH for every includeFrom: true range would pass this test. The current implementation is correct. This change strengthens coverage for the base-selection behavior.

Raise MIN_HOST_SERVICE_VERSION for hosts that lack includeFrom.

Remote hosts at or above MIN_HOST_SERVICE_VERSION but without this change stay selectable. They ignore includeFrom, so a range selection returns the exclusive fromHash..commitHash result and omits the oldest commit's files. Raise MIN_HOST_SERVICE_VERSION to the release that includes this change, with a note in host-version.ts on why.

As per coding guidelines, "Also raise MIN_HOST_SERVICE_VERSION when a change needs a newer host, with a note in that file on why." This change needs a newer host for correct range results.

selectable; add a note there explaining that this minimum is required for
correct range results.

Use the empty tree for the repository's object format.

EMPTY_TREE_HASH is the SHA-1 empty tree. In a SHA-256 repository, git diff cannot resolve it, so an inclusive range that starts at a root commit fails. getChangedFilesForDiff catches that failure and returns [], so the root commit's files are missing from the Changes list. Select the empty-tree ID by object format. For SHA-256 repositories, use 6ef19b41225c5369f1c104d45d8d85efa9b057b53b14b4b9b939dd74decc5321.

Update getChangedFilesForDiff to select the empty-tree ID based on the
repository’s object format: retain the existing SHA-1 ID for SHA-1 repositories
and use the SHA-256 empty-tree ID for SHA-256 repositories. Ensure root-commit
inclusive ranges use the selected ID when computing changed files.

Do not treat a shallow boundary commit as a root commit.

resolveCommitBaseRef uses the empty tree when git rev-list --parents prints no parent. Git omits the parent of a shallow boundary commit, so a non-root commit can take the empty-tree path. The whole boundary snapshot then appears as added files with full-content diffs. Check the raw commit header for a parent line before falling back.

Update resolveCommitBaseRef to distinguish a true root commit from a shallow
boundary: when rev-list yields no parent, inspect the raw commit header for a
parent line and reject the incomplete-history case instead of returning
EMPTY_TREE_HASH. Keep the empty-tree fallback only for commits with no parent in
the raw header.
