Make the backup folder pick two-phase (closes #30) - #32
Problem: the folder picker made the new folder active right away, before the app asked "restore or keep?". Leaving that question unanswered (app killed, page closed, unreadable folder) could let the next automatic backup write into a folder the user never confirmed. #28/#29 patched that with Dart-side holds/backupsIdle guards; this fixes the cause.
Now:
Native side keeps the picked folder as pending (pending_tree_uri). Automatic backups only use the confirmed tree_uri.
"Keep this phone's data" or a finished restore → confirmBackupFolder (pending becomes active, the old folder's grant is released).
Any other exit → discardBackupFolder in a finally (pending dropped, grant released unless it's the active folder).
A pending folder left over from a killed app is discarded on the next pick.
Picking the same folder that's already active is safe: neither path releases its grant.
holds / backupsIdle removed.
Restore path: the folder is confirmed right before the data is replaced. The restore's backup then lands in the new folder, and the old folder's file for today keeps the phone's pre-restore data.
Written by Kimi K3 (edit-only brief), then reviewed and adjusted (restore-path ordering) by Claude.
Checks: flutter analyze clean, TZ=Europe/Warsaw flutter test 39 passed, flutter build apk --debug OK. Not tried on the phone yet. Worth a quick test: Change folder → pick a folder with backups → press Back on the dialog / kill the app, then confirm Today still shows the old folder.
Backup folder selection now lets you review and restore backups before confirming the folder.
You can keep the selected folder or discard it after reviewing its contents.
If you exit or an error occurs before confirmation, the selection is discarded.
Bug Fixes
Automatic backups continue using the active folder while a new folder selection is awaiting a decision, preventing unanswered selections from redirecting backups.
A picked folder is now stored as pending, not active, until the "restore or
keep?" question is answered. Keep, or a finished restore, confirms it; any
other exit (back out, page closed, error) discards it and releases its grant.
Automatic backups only ever use the confirmed folder, so the Dart-side
holds/backupsIdle guards are gone.
On the restore path the folder is confirmed right before the data is
replaced, so the restore's own backup lands in the new folder and the old
folder's file for today keeps the phone's pre-restore data.

Backup folder selection now stages the folder as pending. The backup page reads from it while the user decides whether to restore or keep the phone’s data. The page then confirms the folder or discards it.
Changes: Pending backup folder flow
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Native pending-folder storage and channel android/app/src/main/kotlin/dev/susiee/dosekeeper/BackupStore.kt, android/app/src/main/kotlin/dev/susiee/dosekeeper/MainActivity.kt
The native store stages a selected folder, supports pending-folder reads, and provides confirm and discard operations. The channel passes pending-folder requests to the store.
Dart selection and restore flow lib/services/backup_bridge.dart, lib/services/backup_service.dart, lib/ui/backup_page.dart, AGENTS.md
The bridge exposes folder selection, pending-folder reads, confirmation, and discard. The backup page uses the pending folder during the restore-or-keep decision and discards it on exit unless confirmed. The service removes the folder-choice hold and idle-wait behavior. AGENTS.md documents the flow.

Staging the selected folder improves consent protection. However, restoring data and activating that folder are not coordinated with automatic backups or interruption recovery. Restored data can overwrite the previous folder’s recovery copy before the destination switch completes. The impact is limited to this installation’s data and user-selected folders.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: Database restore and destination activation are not one isolated, recoverable transition. Automatic backups now remain enabled during selection, while folder confirmation occurs only after database replacement and alarm synchronization. A backup can therefore write restored data into the previous folder before confirmation, overwriting its pre-restore daily recovery copy. Conversely, a pre-restore snapshot can reach the newly active folder if promotion overtakes its write. Failure or interruption after database commit but before confirmation can leave restored data paired with the old destination; ordinary cleanup only discards the pending folder. The base drained queued backups and suppressed automatic writes during this flow. The surviving backup queue and database transaction do not cover this cross-component transition.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
observed — The affected assets are this installation’s medication and dose database and documents in its user-selected active and pending trees. Native access requires the corresponding persisted read/write URI grant; folder operations resolve documents through that tree.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The supported PR concern is backup integrity and recovery containment, not a demonstrated external exploit. Ordinary resume-driven activity or interruption can expose the uncoordinated restore/destination transition without an attacker gaining additional privileges.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The changed methods are registered on the Flutter engine’s existing method channel, and folder URIs originate from the system picker result. Selection immediately obtains a persisted read/write grant; confirmation is an application-routing control, not a separate Android permission boundary. The checked write path has no pending-folder option.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Confirmation and discard are no-ops when no pending selection exists. Grant release explicitly preserves the active URI, including when the user selects the already-active folder. This protects permission ownership but does not serialize backup I/O with restore or folder promotion.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Give backup snapshot/write/prune, restore, and destination promotion a shared transition owner. Preserve an explicit recovery state for interruption after database commit so restart cannot silently resume backups against the previous destination.

Explanation
The title "Make the backup folder pick two-phase (closes #30)" matches the main change in the changeset. The changes make folder selection stage a picked folder as pending, then confirm or discard it, across BackupStore.kt, MainActivity.kt, backup_bridge.dart, backup_service.dart, and backup_page.dart. The issue reference is accurate and the title is specific and concise. It is 50 characters and 8 words, within a short single-sentence style.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #30 has one coding objective: a two-phase folder pick. The picked folder stays pending until the user answers. Only a confirmed folder becomes active, and an unanswered or failed choice leaves the old folder active.
Evidence at head:
Dart _chooseFolder (lib/ui/backup_page.dart) calls BackupBridge.pickFolder() and lists and reads the pending folder with pending: true. It then shows the restore-or-keep dialog. This matches the issue's "Dart lists that folder, asks".
Keep path: BackupBridge.confirmFolder() runs after the answer and before _service.backUp().
Restore path: _restore takes an onReplaced callback. It runs scheduler.restore, then confirmFolder(), then backUpQuietly(). A failed restore throws before confirmation, so the folder stays pending.
Other exits: finally calls discardFolder() unless confirmed is true. This covers back-out, page close, the mounted guard, and errors, including a native pick failure.
Native behavior, from the summary of BackupStore.kt and MainActivity.kt: setPendingFolder stores pending_tree_uri and takes the grant. confirmPendingFolder promotes it and releases a different previous grant. discardPendingFolder drops it and releases its grant. releaseGrant never releases the active folder's grant. A leftover pending folder is replaced on the next pick. Automatic backups use the default pending = false.
holds and backupsIdle no longer appear in the summary of lib/services/backup_service.dart.
Restore ordering: the PR objectives say confirmation happens "after a restore finishes". The PR description and the code confirm during the restore, after data replacement and before the restore's backup. The current description and the code govern. The issue's goal is that an unanswered prompt cannot redirect backups. A Restore answer is an answered prompt, so this ordering satisfies the issue.
Limits: the incremental diff from the previous reviewed head was unavailable. I read backup_page.dart at head directly. I relied on the summaries for the Kotlin and Dart bridge changes. The issue requires no automated tests.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All changed areas connect to #30's two-phase pick or to its direct consequences:
BackupStore.kt: pending storage, confirm and discard, the grant-release guard, and the pending option on folderUri, list, read, and requireFolder. These implement the objective.
MainActivity.kt: channel methods for pending list and read, and for confirm and discard. The pick returns the folder name. These expose the flow to Dart.
lib/services/backup_bridge.dart: wrappers for the new channel methods and the pending parameters.
lib/ui/backup_page.dart: the two-phase _chooseFolder, the onReplaced callback in _restore, and the restore-or-keep dialog. The dialog uses barrierDismissible: false and PopScope(canPop: false) so that an unanswered dismissal cannot reach the keep branch. This is the same unanswered-choice hazard that #30 describes, applied to the dialog that asks the question.
lib/services/backup_service.dart: removal of holds and backupsIdle. The pending flow removes the hazard these guards covered, so they are redundant.
AGENTS.md: documentation of the new flow.
No unrelated feature, refactor, or file change was found in the evidence. The Kotlin and bridge changes are assessed from summaries, not from a full diff read.

…restore replaced the data
- pickFolder now runs inside the try, so a throw from the native pick still
reaches the finally that discards the pending folder.
- The folder is confirmed after scheduler.restore succeeds (and before the
restore's own backup), so a failed restore leaves it unconfirmed and no
automatic backup can overwrite the file being restored.
