fix: stop leaking label displays and clean up the leftovers - #12
A read-only scan of Main's entity files found 10,783 saved entities. About 3,900 are duplicate TrialRooms label TextDisplays stacked at the exact label positions of the trial room in region r.8.4 (x≈4100–4160, z≈2520–2560). The worst spots had 659 + 659 copies.
Cause: Hologram spawned persistent displays but remembered them only by an in-memory UUID. After a restart or a chunk unload the UUID was lost or didn't resolve, so a new label was spawned and the old one stayed saved in the chunk. All of these load whenever a player comes near.
Change
Labels spawn non-persistent with a trialrooms:label PDC tag. spawn/refresh share one path, which:
never spawns into an unloaded chunk;
only creates a display while a player is within 96 blocks;
removes a lost tagged display at the same spot before spawning, so there's never a second one.
Text, position, the 96-block show/hide distance and the update cadence are unchanged.
New LabelCleanup runs on EntitiesLoadEvent and once at enable for already-loaded chunks. It removes a TextDisplay only if all of these hold:
it sits within 0.001 of a live label position;
no label owns it;
it either has the tag, or looks like a legacy leak: persistent, empty PDC, no scoreboard tags, not riding anything.
Other plugins' displays are untouched. It logs one Removed N leftover label displays at … line per chunk.
Testing
HologramTest (rewritten), LabelCleanupTest (new), LifecycleTest enable sweep. The cleanup test removes 659+659 stacked copies and keeps the current display and every look-alike (other PDC, tag, non-persistent, riding, dead, 0.01 off, other world).
126 tests locally; the only 12 failures are the Windows file-permission tests that fail the same way on main.
Dev (10-30, 11:55–16:47 UTC): all ten perf branches from this round ran together (InteractibleFurniture, Cooking, Magic, RPCharacters, Thievery, VFBuilders, SimpleFactions, Archaeo, VehicleFramework, TrialRooms). Bot probes ran on these jars and again on the previous jars for comparison. No errors from any of the ten plugins in the log, including through a scheduled restart. Main's trial room was copied to Dev: TrialRooms data with the world UUID rewritten, plus the r.8.4 block and entity region files.
First visit: 18 cleanup lines, 3,915 leftovers removed. All 13 label positions then held exactly one display, tagged trialrooms:label.
After leaving for 90 s and returning: still one per label, no new cleanup lines, and the saved entity file no longer had any TrialRooms stacks.
Dev's own region files were restored afterwards.
On Main the cleanup runs the first time a player comes near the room after deploy, removing ~3,900 entities in one tick. TrialRooms is not on Tutorial.
Label TextDisplays were spawned persistent and tracked only by an
in-memory UUID, so every restart or chunk unload/reload saved the old
display with the chunk and spawned a new one next to it. Main has about
3,900 stacked copies around the trial rooms.
- Spawn label displays non-persistent and tag them with trialrooms:label.
- Never spawn while the label's chunk is unloaded, and only create a
display while a player is within the 96-block view range (tick() keeps
the same show/hide behaviour and update cadence).
- Before spawning, remove a lost TrialRooms display at the same position.
- New LabelCleanup listener: on EntitiesLoadEvent (and once at enable for
chunks already loaded) remove TextDisplays sitting exactly on a live
label position that no label owns and that are either tagged or legacy
(persistent, empty PDC, no scoreboard tags). Logs one line per chunk.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved hologram label handling so labels appear only when their chunk is loaded and a player is nearby, and are removed when those conditions no longer apply.
Cleaned up leftover, unowned labels at active label positions while preserving labels managed by the plugin.
Hologram displays now use a shared lifecycle and are tracked as runtime entities. LabelCleanup removes eligible leftover displays at live label positions during chunk loading and startup. TrialRooms registers the cleanup listener and runs a loaded-chunk sweep after data hydration.
Hologram updates now check chunk loading and player proximity. Created displays are non-persistent and tagged. Tests cover display updates, removal, replacement, and invalid locations.

Cleanup can delete unrelated displays at label positions, and label updates have positioning and unloaded-world handling gaps. Startup also repeats registry scans across loaded chunks. Address these issues before merging.

The new assertion checks only that LabelCleanup.sweepLoadedChunks() ran. It does not detect a future reorder that runs the sweep before SpawnerManager.hydrateFrom or ChestManager.hydrateFrom. Add an ordered verification for these calls.

Reuse label positions during the startup sweep.
TrialRooms.onEnable() calls the sweep synchronously. The sweep scans every registered hologram once per qualifying loaded chunk, so startup work can grow as labels × chunks. Build the positions once and reuse them for each chunk.

Do not remove unowned legacy displays without a stronger ownership check.
An unrelated persistent TextDisplay with an empty PDC and no scoreboard tags at a live label position passes isLegacyLabel. removeLeftovers then calls td.remove() during chunk loading or Hologram.create. Add a discriminator that identifies TrialRooms ownership while preserving required legacy cleanup.

Fixed in a7a15d1: an untagged display now also has to match the old TrialRooms setup (centre billboard, shadowed, not see-through, no default background) and show plain text that the label at that spot produces. That means the spawner level/status forms, the entrance 'Right-Click with a ... to enter', or the current text for chest and exit labels (LegacyLabelTexts). Displays showing any other text are kept.
- Deregister labels whose spawner, chest or entrance is deleted
(Hologram.dispose), so their old spot no longer counts as a live label.
- tick() teleports an existing display when its label moved.
- position() treats a label in an unloaded world as having no position,
so one bad label no longer breaks a whole tick loop or cleanup pass.
- The startup sweep reads the labels once and groups them by chunk.
- Untagged legacy displays are only removed when they look exactly like
old TrialRooms labels (centre billboard, shadowed, not see-through, no
default background) and show a text that label produces: the spawner
level/status forms, the entrance "Right-Click with a ... to enter", or
the current text for chest and exit labels.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- A disposed Hologram never shows again: spawn/refresh/tick remove any
display it still owns and return, so an editor left open on a deleted
spawner can no longer bring its label back.
- registerBound disposes the label of a chest it replaces at the same
block, so rebinding no longer doubles the chest label.
