Add a lethal buffer so builds far past the border are safe - #22
Builds placed far past the border kill anyone teleported to them: everything outside the border takes damage, however far out. This adds a buffer: a lethal band just past the edge and a limit after which nothing happens. Far builds become safe for players teleported there, and nobody can walk, ride, fly or pearl out to them.
What changes
Two new per-world settings (both off by default, so existing configs behave exactly as before):
Distance is measured along the furthest axis, so the bands are square like the border.
The kill sets health to 0 instead of dealing damage. No damage event fires, so armour, Resistance, absorption, totems and plugins that cancel damage (such as RPCharacters' knockout) can't carry anyone across. If another plugin cancels the death itself, the player is moved to the world spawn.
The check runs every tick-interval-ticks, so the lethal band has to be wider than one check's worth of travel. A new global max-travel-speed (default 350 b/s, a guideline: roughly the most Paper's movement check normally accepts from an elytra) is used only to log a warning on load or reload when a band is narrower. The loader also warns when buffer-width is set without lethal-depth, or when lethal-depth is past buffer-width.
Teleports players set off themselves (ender pearls, chorus fruit, Nether portals, End gateways) can't land a player in the lethal band or past the buffer, unless they are already past it. Staff and plugin teleports can, which is how players reach far builds. Leaving the End is not blocked (it only goes to a bed or the world spawn).
A respawn point inside the lethal band sends the player to the world spawn (or the middle of the border if the spawn is itself in the band), so there is no death loop.
/worldborder debug shows the new zones and a Buffer: line.
Players teleported out to a far build have to be teleported back too. Walking in from the far side crosses the lethal band.
Review
CodeRabbit's first review (3 findings + 1 nitpick) is addressed in ca2a0cd; it confirmed each fix in its threads and resolved them. Its re-review was rate limited.
An independent Opus review found that pearls and portals could jump the band; fixed in e78dfa8 and 092d9e7, then approved.
Testing
mvn clean verify: 139 tests pass; 100% line coverage is kept.
TFMCDev01 with lethal-depth: 200, buffer-width: 1000 on TFMC_Map (the values planned for Main). A mineflayer bot with a real character passed 12 of 12 checks:
/worldborder debug shows BEYOND and the buffer line
x=−1000 (1200 out, past the buffer): no damage
x=50 (150 out): regular damage, not killed
x=−400 (600 out): killed; respawns at map spawn, so no death loop
with a totem, Resistance V, Absorption V and Health Boost V: still killed, totem not used
creative in the lethal band: not killed
coming back in from the far side (x=−800): killed
fast travel out from x=300 with no stops at about 80 and 235 blocks/s: killed 300 and 500 blocks out, never reached past the buffer
a spawnpoint inside the lethal band: respawns at map spawn (on these servers RPCharacters' respawn flow already lands it there before the guard)
an ender pearl thrown from the damage band into the lethal band: teleport cancelled, player stays put
A 100-block band on reload logs the expected warning. Restoring the config clears it.
Past lethal-depth blocks outside the border, players are killed outright
(health set to zero, so armour, totems and damage-cancelling plugins can't
carry them across). Past buffer-width blocks nothing happens, so builds out
there are safe for players teleported to them. Both are per world and off
by default, so existing configs behave as before. The loader warns when the
lethal band is narrow enough to cross between two checks at
max-travel-speed.

Dev testing showed Paper rejects moves above roughly 17 blocks a tick for
elytra flight, so 350 blocks a second is about the fastest anyone can get
across a lethal band. 100 understated what a cheating client can do.

📝 Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added configurable lethal bands and outer buffer limits for world borders. Players in lethal bands are killed, while players beyond the buffer are unaffected.
Respawns within a lethal band are moved to the world spawn.
Added configuration and debug output for the new border settings, including warnings about lethal bands that may be crossed between checks.
Documentation
Updated the README and configuration guidance with details of lethal bands and buffer limits.
The change adds configurable lethal and outer buffer zones to world borders. It applies lethal-zone handling to affected players and respawn locations, and adds configuration validation, debug output, and tests.

Configuration loads lethal depth, buffer width, and maximum travel speed. It warns about finite buffers without lethal depth and bands narrower than the configured travel distance. Config comments and command debug output describe the settings and zones. Tests cover loading, warnings, and debug output; the README describes the lethal buffer.

BorderManager sets affected players’ health to zero in lethal zones and clears warnings in safe and beyond-buffer zones. RespawnGuard moves affected players’ lethal-zone respawns to the world spawn and is registered during plugin startup. Tests cover these behaviours and bypass cases.

A bed or anchor inside the lethal band would kill the player again on every
border check. Before the lethal band, that spot only took regular damage,
so a player could walk out; now they would be stuck in a death loop.

Add a test that dispatches PlayerRespawnEvent through the registered listener.
RespawnGuardTest calls guard.onRespawn(event) directly, so no test fires a PlayerRespawnEvent through the server. WorldBorder.onEnable registers the listener at WorldBorder.java:37. If that registration is removed, the existing tests still pass. Respawns in the lethal band would then stop being moved to world spawn, and no test would fail.
WorldBorderTest already loads the plugin with MockBukkit.load at line 38, so the listener is registered there. Add a test that:
Configures a border with a lethal band for a test world.
Creates a player and a PlayerRespawnEvent with a respawn position inside the lethal band.
Dispatches the event through the server's plugin manager.
Asserts that the event's respawn location equals the world spawn.
Check the MockBukkit calls against the mockbukkit-v1.21 version declared in pom.xml when you write the test.
This adds coverage for the listener registration. It does not fix a production failure. The direct-call tests in RespawnGuardTest.java:78-119 remain unchanged.

- /worldborder debug only describes a lethal band that can happen, so a
lethal-depth past buffer-width shows "no lethal band".
- If the world spawn is itself in the lethal band, the respawn guard uses
the middle of the border instead (long maths, so extreme bounds can't
overflow).
- The README states the lethal band has to be wider than one check's
worth of travel.
- A test sends a respawn through the registered listener.

The border is sampled every few ticks, so a teleport that lands past the
lethal band (an ender pearl cannon, chorus fruit, a portal) skipped it.
Player-set-off teleports (ENDER_PEARL, CONSUMABLE_EFFECT, NETHER_PORTAL,
END_PORTAL, END_GATEWAY) can no longer land a player in the lethal band or
past the buffer unless they are already past it; staff and plugin
teleports still can.
Also from the independent review:
- If another plugin cancels the death in the lethal band, the player is
moved to the world spawn instead of walking on.
- lethal-depth past buffer-width always warns, whatever max-travel-speed is.
- max-travel-speed is described as a guideline, not a hard limit.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- END_PORTAL is no longer guarded: leaving the End only goes to a bed or
the world spawn, and a bed past the buffer means the player was sent
out there. Guarding it would trap such a player on the exit portal.
- After a cancelled death in the lethal band, "Moved ..." is only logged
when the teleport worked; otherwise a warning says the move failed.
