Sleepytyme

Oblivion-Style Leveling – Overengineered Edition

An ESPless overhaul of Fallout: New Vegas leveling inspired by Oblivion

Sleepytyme Banner

Overview

Sleepytyme replaces Fallout: New Vegas’ instant level-up system with an Oblivion-style “sleep to level up” experience.
When you earn enough XP to level, nothing happens immediately.
Instead, you receive subtle reminders — a HUD icon, and optional toasts — encouraging you to find a bed and rest, where you will then get relevant dream messages depending on the wasteland that the player is in (TTW).

This was inspired by Demorome's “Sleep To Level Up - Oblivion-Style Levelling” mod and started as a simple ESPLess conversion, but then I decided that I wanted more control over the different dream messages for TTW so that I would get relevant messages depending on if I was in the Capital or Mojave Wasteland for my TTW playthrough.

For the dream messages I used AVladimir1994's Custom Messages for TTW which are available from Demorome's original mod page. Then I split the Capital and Mojave based messages to their respective sections, duplicated the generic ones, and finally filled in the gaps for both wastelands up to level cap.

Key Features

  • Oblivion-Style Leveling
You only level up after sleeping once you’ve earned enough XP.

  • ESPless & Lightweight
No ESP/ESM plugin required. Implemented entirely via NVSE scripting and UI injection.

  • Level-Up HUD Icon
A configurable HUD icon appears when you are ready to level.

  • Dream Messages on Level Up
Optional, configurable dream-like messages appear when you sleep and level up (separate wasteland messages for TTW).

  • Optional Reminder Toasts
    Periodic, customisable reminder notifications.

  • MCM Extender Support
Full in-game configuration via MCM Extender:

    • Toggle level-up icon
    • Move the icon anywhere on screen (X / Y sliders)
    • Choose a custom icon style
    • Override icon color with RGB picker
    • Toggle XP meter & XP sounds
    • Configure toast timing, duration, and text
  • XP Meter & Sound Suppression
Optionally hides the vanilla XP meter and disables XP/level-up sound effects for a cleaner Oblivion-style experience.

  • Fade-to-Black Sleep Transitions
Custom image-space effects for smoother, more immersive sleep → dream → wake transitions.

  • Highly Compatible
Designed to coexist cleanly with popular UI, HUD, and gameplay mods.

Gameplay Flow

  1. Gain XP as normal.
  2. When enough XP is earned, no immediate level-up occurs.
  3. A subtle HUD icon appears indicating you are ready to level.
  4. Optional reminder toasts may appear.
  5. Sleep in a bed.
  6. Experience a short fade and dream message.
  7. Level up.

Configuration (MCM Extender)

Sleepytyme uses MCM Extender for all configuration. No manual INI editing required.

You can:

  • Enable / disable the level-up icon
  • Move the icon freely on the screen
  • Select a custom icon graphic
  • Override the icon color using an RGB picker
  • Enable or disable repeating reminder toasts
  • Set reminder intervals and duration (seconds)
  • Disable the vanilla XP meter and XP/level-up sounds

Changes apply in real time unless otherwise noted.

Requirements

  • Fallout: New Vegas
  • NVSE
  • JIP LN NVSE
  • JohnnyGuitar NVSE
  • UIO
  • MCM Extender
  • Plugins+

No ESP/ESM plugin is required.

Compatibility

Sleepytyme is designed to be safe and modular.

  • Compatible with most HUD mods (UIO-based)
  • Compatible with popular gameplay overhauls
  • Optional support for Stewie’s Tweaks hotkeys
  • Safe to add to existing saves
  • Does not permanently alter vanilla records

This may not be compatible with anything that affects the sleep/wait system, though this mod does use SetONSleepWEventHandler to try and mitigate any timing issues.

Uninstallation

  • Disable the mod in your mod manager.
  • Remove the Sleepytyme files.
  • Load your save — leveling will return to vanilla behavior.

No baked-in changes are left behind.
