Information Systems Development Analysis

Project Overview

This project was developed as part of the Business Information Systems module at CCT College Dublin.

The objective of the assignment was to analyse how information systems are developed and implemented in modern organisations. The report examines the different methodologies used in information system development and explores key technical and organisational factors required to build successful systems.

In addition to development methodologies, the project evaluates important system characteristics such as security, reliability, scalability, and legal and ethical considerations.

The project includes two main deliverables:

  • A written academic report
  • A presentation poster/slides explaining the concepts visually

Project Objectives

The assignment aimed to analyse and explain important elements involved in developing modern information systems.

The main objectives of the project were:

  • Explore information system development methodologies
  • Compare Waterfall and Agile development models
  • Analyse techniques for improving system security
  • Discuss strategies for ensuring system reliability
  • Explain how systems can be designed for scalability
  • Identify legal and ethical issues in information systems development
  • Demonstrate understanding of modern IT infrastructure and digital business environments

Information Systems Development

Information systems are critical for modern businesses because they help organisations:

  • Automate processes
  • Reduce operational costs
  • Improve decision-making
  • Increase efficiency
  • Support digital transformation

A successful information system requires a combination of several elements including:

  • Hardware
  • Software
  • Security mechanisms
  • System architecture
  • Legal compliance
  • Ethical responsibility

The project explores how these elements work together to support business operations.

Development Methodologies

Waterfall Model

The Waterfall Model is a traditional software development methodology that follows a sequential development process.

Typical phases include:

  1. Requirements analysis
  2. System design
  3. Implementation
  4. Testing
  5. Deployment
  6. Maintenance

Characteristics of the Waterfall model:

  • Clear and structured phases
  • Strong documentation
  • Suitable for projects with stable and clearly defined requirements

However, the model has limitations when project requirements change during development.

Because each stage must be completed before the next begins, adapting to new requirements can be difficult and may delay project timelines.

Agile Model

The Agile Model is a modern development methodology focused on flexibility, collaboration and iterative development.

Common Agile frameworks include:

  • Scrum
  • Kanban

Key characteristics of Agile:

  • Iterative development cycles
  • Continuous feedback
  • Strong collaboration between teams and stakeholders
  • Faster adaptation to changing requirements

Agile development allows teams to release smaller increments of functionality and continuously improve the system based on feedback.

This makes Agile particularly useful for dynamic environments and rapidly changing technologies.

Ensuring Security, Reliability and Scalability

For an information system to function effectively, it must be designed with three critical qualities:

  • Security
  • Reliability
  • Scalability

These characteristics ensure the system remains trustworthy, stable, and capable of supporting business growth.

Security

Security protects systems and data from unauthorised access, cyberattacks and data breaches.

Common security techniques include:

  • Data encryption
  • Access control mechanisms
  • Authentication systems
  • Regular security updates
  • Security audits and penetration testing
  • Employee cybersecurity awareness training

Strong security practices help protect both organisational data and user information.

Reliability

Reliability ensures that a system performs its intended functions consistently without failure.

Techniques used to increase reliability include:

  • Backup systems
  • Redundancy mechanisms
  • Failover systems
  • Error handling
  • Fault tolerance
  • Continuous testing and quality assurance

Reliable systems minimise downtime and ensure business continuity.

Scalability

Scalability refers to a system’s ability to handle increasing workloads or user demand.

A scalable system can grow with the organisation without losing performance.

Methods used to achieve scalability include:

  • Modular system architecture
  • Distributed systems
  • Load balancing
  • Resource optimisation
  • System monitoring and performance analysis
  • Horizontal and vertical scaling strategies

These techniques allow businesses to expand their systems efficiently as they grow.

Legal Considerations

Businesses must ensure their information systems comply with legal requirements and regulations.

Important legal aspects include:

  • Data protection laws
  • Data privacy regulations
  • Intellectual property protection
  • Compliance with security standards
  • Proper licensing of software

Failure to comply with legal requirements can result in serious consequences such as legal penalties, financial losses, and reputational damage.

Ethical Considerations

Ethical issues are also important in information system development.

Organisations must ensure that technology is used responsibly and fairly.

Key ethical concerns include:

  • Respecting user privacy
  • Obtaining informed consent for data collection
  • Preventing algorithmic bias
  • Ensuring fairness in automated decisions
  • Promoting transparency in technology usage

Ethical information system development helps maintain trust between organisations and users.

Presentation Poster

In addition to the written report, a visual presentation poster was created to summarise the key concepts of the project.

The presentation includes slides covering:

  • Introduction to Information Systems
  • Development methodologies
  • Agile and Waterfall models
  • Security techniques
  • Reliability and scalability concepts
  • Legal and ethical considerations
  • Final conclusions

The poster was designed to present complex technical concepts in a clear and accessible visual format.

Technologies / Tools Used

This assignment was developed using academic research and documentation tools.

Tools used include:

  • Microsoft Word (report writing)
  • Presentation software (PowerPoint / PDF poster)
  • Academic research sources
  • Structured report formatting
  • Visual slides for concept presentation

Learning Outcomes

This project demonstrates understanding of several important topics in information systems and software development, including:

  • Software development methodologies
  • Agile vs Waterfall development
  • System architecture principles
  • Cybersecurity fundamentals
  • Reliability engineering
  • System scalability design
  • Legal compliance in IT systems
  • Ethical responsibility in technology

These skills are fundamental for professionals working in software engineering, IT infrastructure, and information systems management.
