feat(api): report the consequence delta on dry runs - #290
A dry run only says whether a change would be admitted; reviewers also need to know which findings it would create, clear or leave untouched before they apply or merge it.
Calling a finding fixed when the later scan never looked for it would hide real problems, so absence is only trusted when the producing suite completed on an untruncated snapshot.
Finding identity ignores prose and severity so wording changes and rule promotions do not show up as churn, while structured fields added to issues later join identity automatically.
The delta is advisory and never changes a dry run's status, so existing callers and admission behaviour are unaffected.
Default chosen for review: the comparison always covers the full visible world and reports suites it cannot evaluate against a candidate world as gaps instead of approximating them, trading dry-run cost for never claiming an unproven resolution.
Computing the delta outside the write lock keeps a slow comparison from delaying other writers, and the snapshot ids it carries let a reader notice when the world moved underneath it.
Medium Risk
Dry-run paths now perform two full validation scans per request, which increases server load and latency on previews; behavior is advisory and does not alter write admission.
Overview
Dry runs on PutEntity, BatchMutate, and MergeBranch now optionally return a consequence_delta: a before/after comparison of validation findings across the caller’s visible snapshot (introduced, resolved, severity changes, carried to successor versions, subject removed, or unknown when coverage did not prove a change). The delta is advisory—it does not change dry-run status and is omitted on real writes, replays, conflicts, or when computation fails.
The server adds a consequence module that full-scopes both worlds with the same suites (hygiene, architecture, model, strategic, scenarios), matches findings by structured identity (not prose/severity), and binds before_snapshot_id / after_snapshot_id plus per-side coverage and a complete flag. Computation runs after the mutation lock is released; duration is recorded on trogon_atlas.consequence_delta.duration.
Wire types live in validation.proto; CLI, MCP (put_entity*, batch_mutate*, apply_manifests, merge_branch), and trogon-atlas apply/merge --dry-run JSON expose the same shape. Docs add explanation/reference pages and tie consequence deltas to validation coverage.

Validated dry-run puts, batches, and branch merges can return advisory comparisons of validation findings before and after a proposed change. The delta includes finding changes, per-side coverage, completeness, and snapshot IDs. Client, CLI, and MCP responses expose the delta when the server provides it.
The API adds FindingChange and ConsequenceDelta messages and adds delta fields to put, batch, and merge responses. The documentation describes response conditions, comparison rules, coverage, and uncertainty.

The server scans validation suites and classifies matching findings using identity, versions, and scan coverage. Tests cover classification, occurrence counts, and incomplete comparisons.
The server computes deltas for dry-run puts, batches, and merges after releasing mutation locks. It records comparison duration. Integration tests cover delta results, missing deltas, and incomplete comparisons. Other async tests pin their shared futures.

The client serializes delta data, and CLI and MCP outputs include it when present. The MCP integration test checks an introduced finding in a dry-run response.

The remaining issues primarily affect advisory finding accuracy, snapshot interpretation, and comparison efficiency rather than admission decisions. Merging carries bounded risk; correct successor counts and clarify snapshot scope, with oversized-response handling retained as follow-up.

A rabbit checks the worlds in view, And counts each finding, old and new. A preview marks what changed along, While gaps say where the proof is wrong. The delta hops to tools with care, And leaves real writes untouched there.

compare returns every change with representative issues and has no output-size limit or fallback. A large finding delta may exceed the response transport's message limit, turning an otherwise admitted dry run into a failed RPC instead of an optional advisory.
The caller cannot obtain the dry-run status or validation response.
This can occur when: A proposed change affects sufficiently many model findings that serialized ConsequenceDelta.changes exceeds the configured gRPC response limit.

Update compare’s ConsequenceDelta construction so a large changes collection
cannot exceed the configured gRPC response limit and prevent the dry-run status
or validation response from reaching the caller. Use the established
response-size limit and advisory fallback behavior, preserving the normal
full-delta response when it fits; determine and reuse the existing fallback
mechanism rather than inventing a new API.
consequence::Scan::of runs inline on the request task, twice per delta (service.rs:1168-1169). Each EventModel and slice pass rebuilds a known set over the full world (validation.rs:1862-1869, 3390-3397). A dry run therefore costs roughly O(models × entities) on one Tokio worker. The 5000-entity snapshot cap bounds this cost, and the RPC deadline cannot interrupt synchronous work. Share one key index across the passes, or move the scan to spawn_blocking.

Update the consequence::Scan::of validation flow so EventModel and slice checks
reuse one key index for the entire scan instead of rebuilding a full-world known
set per pass. Use the existing validation interfaces if they support sharing an
index; otherwise move the synchronous scan to spawn_blocking, preserving the
current checks and results.
…e finding
Evidence detail is prose, and evidence that pins the subject moves with it, so treating either as identity reported one unchanged finding as resolved and introduced.

A truncated comparison loads architecture targets outside both worlds, so a reader could take a matching before id as proof those findings are current.

The reference is now generated and checked against the registry, so the dry run descriptions that gained the delta must be regenerated to match.
