  • When the lock session ends during a failover while new connections hang, a lock call queued behind the one that hit the dead session waited on the pool for about 5 s before the owners heard their locks were gone, so subscriptions kept running on a session that had already ended.
  • The cluster guide told operators that tcp_keepalives_idle or client_connection_check_interval alone would get a dead node's locks released, yet neither does, which leaves that node's subscriptions unclaimable for over two hours on Linux defaults.

PR Summary

Medium Risk
Changes cluster subscription lock failover timing and operator guidance for PostgreSQL TCP keepalives; incorrect tuning could still delay lock hand-off, but behavior is strictly improved for the race being fixed.

Overview
Fixes a race where lock owners could keep running for seconds after their PostgreSQL session died because the advisory-lock GenServer answered the failing call before it handled :session_lost, and the next queued lock attempts then blocked on the pool.

The DB connection protocol now emits :query_disconnected when a disconnect path runs (without auto-retry), and AdvisoryLocks drains that signal and waits up to 1s for :session_lost in handle_pending_session_loss / a dedicated handler so lock_released is delivered before later queued calls proceed. A regression test covers failover with a blackholed proxy, suspended connection, and queued lock spawns.

Cluster.md is corrected: dead-node lock release on silent network/host failure needs tcp_keepalives_idle, tcp_keepalives_interval, and tcp_keepalives_count together (Linux defaults can exceed two hours); tcp_keepalives_idle alone and client_connection_check_interval do not shorten that window.

Walkthrough

The advisory-lock protocol now signals query disconnections, and lock handling waits for a matching session-loss notice. The cluster guide also explains PostgreSQL TCP keepalive detection and configuration.

Changes

Session-loss handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Query disconnect and session-loss notice ordering
lib/event_store/advisory_locks/protocol.ex, lib/event_store/advisory_locks.ex, test/advisory_locks_test.exs
The protocol sends :query_disconnected to the lock server. The lock server waits up to 1,000 ms for a matching :session_lost notice. A regression test covers queued lock calls during session loss.

PostgreSQL keepalive guidance

Layer / File(s) Summary
Document TCP keepalive detection
guides/Cluster.md
The guide explains that Linux TCP keepalive defaults can delay lost-client detection for over two hours. It recommends setting all three keepalive parameters and gives example values.

Synchronize on a queued lock call at locks.

Process.info(lock_connection, :messages) only proves that the suspended connection has a message. It does not prove that a lock call reached the locks mailbox. The pre-change implementation can therefore notify the owner before any queued call waits on the pool, allowing this regression test to pass without detecting the delayed-notification regression.

Wait for any queued :try_advisory_lock call. Do not rely on spawn order or key 5.
