  • A secret reference that is misspelled, points at a locked vault, or names a provider the server cannot reach only surfaces once the agent starts with the variable missing. Nothing in Settings tells the user whether the reference works before they save it.
  • Each secret variable now has a check button that reads the reference through its store on the server and reports resolved or failed, with the store's own error text, so a broken reference is caught while the user is still editing it.
  • The check tests the draft as written, not the saved value, because the common case is fixing a reference and wanting to know it works before saving.
  • The server never returns the secret value. A successful check primes the resolver cache so the next provider start does not prompt again.
  • The method requires the same settings write grant as saving a provider, since it lets a client probe which references a server can read.

PR Summary

Medium Risk
Adds a settings-gated RPC that probes secret backends from the server; successful checks cache credentials, but scope matches settings write and values are not returned to the client.

Overview
Adds a Settings “check secret” flow so users can validate provider secret references (1Password, OpenBao, AWS) before saving, without starting an agent.

Server: New server.checkSecretSource RPC returns Resolved or Failed with store error text and never exposes the secret value. ProviderSecretResolver.check performs a fresh read (bypassing cache), primes the resolver cache on success, and is gated like other settings writes (AuthSettingsWriteScope). Secret-store reads in ProviderSecretResolverLive now use a SecretRead result type so failures carry actionable detail strings (CLI stderr, OpenBao errors, timeouts) shared by check and resolve.

Web: ProviderEnvironmentSection shows a per-row check control (spinner / success / error tooltip) against the draft source when environmentId is available; wired through serverEnvironment.checkSecretSource.

Docs and tests cover the RPC, resolver behavior, UI, and permissions.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds a permission-guarded RPC to check provider secret sources. The server reports resolution results and failure details, and provider settings display the check status for the current secret source.

Changes: Secret source check flow

Layer / File(s) Summary
RPC contract and permission
packages/contracts/src/secretProvider.ts, packages/contracts/src/rpc.ts, packages/contracts/src/clientRpcPermissions.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/server.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/commandPermissions.test.ts
Adds the result schema and RPC method, assigns the settings-write scope, and exposes the client command. The permission test checks authorization for the destination environment.
Secret read results and resolver check
apps/server/src/provider/ProviderSecretResolver.ts, apps/server/src/provider/ProviderSecretResolverLive.ts, apps/server/src/provider/ProviderSecretResolverLive.test.ts, apps/server/src/provider/ProviderRegistry.test.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProviderAdapterRegistry.test.ts
The resolver returns detailed read outcomes and implements checks that cache successful values without returning the secret. Tests cover success, failure details, and cache priming; resolver test doubles implement the new method.
Server RPC handling and instrumentation
apps/server/src/ws.ts, apps/server/src/observability/RpcInstrumentation.ts
The WebSocket handler delegates checks to the resolver. Instrumentation maps the method to the server aggregate.
Provider settings check UI
apps/web/src/components/settings/ProviderInstanceCard.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/AddProviderInstanceDialog.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/ProviderSettingsPanel.environment.browser.test.tsx, docs/fork/0033-secret-providers-have-names.md, docs/user/provider-secrets.md
Provider settings pass the environment ID and show check status for the current secret source. The browser test covers failed and resolved results. Documentation describes checking a reference, including unsaved edits.

The secret check remains usable, but OpenBao errors should be replaced with safe log metadata before merge or accepted as a bounded follow-up.
