  • A desktop dev runner orphaned by a dead parent kept running for days with an old Electron version cached. When a fresh runner started in the same checkout, both rebuilt the shared dev app bundle at once, mixing two Electron versions, and Electron crashed on boot in an endless restart loop.
  • Runners in one checkout also killed each other's Electron, and restarts had no limit, so nothing broke the loop.
  • Parallel worktrees are a normal workflow, so the guards are scoped per checkout, and each worktree's app shows its name so it is clear which worktree owns an open window.
  • Stop and reset mise tasks give a clean way out when a checkout's dev app gets into a bad state.

PR Summary

Medium Risk
Changes dev process lifecycle and signals PIDs on Unix; mistakes could stop the wrong runner, though guards verify cwd/command. Windows stop remains unsupported.

Overview
Adds per-checkout desktop dev runner ownership so only one dev-electron process controls a worktree at a time. A new .electron-runtime/runner.json record is claimed atomically on start; a fresh runner stops a verified previous one instead of racing on the shared Electron bundle. Runners shut down when their parent dies (orphan check) and release the record only after teardown so replacement runners are not killed mid-handoff.

Introduces a crash-loop breaker that pauses automatic Electron restarts after repeated abnormal exits until watched build outputs change, with guidance to use mise run dev:desktop:reset. mise run dev:desktop:stop / dev:stop stop the recorded runner safely (with stale-PID and unverifiable-cwd handling on Unix).

On macOS dev builds in linked worktrees, the Dock/switcher name now includes a worktree label (launcher metadata bumped). Docs describe the single-runner behavior and stop/reset escape hatches.

📝 Walkthrough

The desktop development scripts now coordinate one runner per checkout, stop orphaned runners, and pause restarts after repeated crashes. New stop and reset tasks manage the runner and Electron runtime. Linked worktrees use distinct macOS Dock names.

Changes: Desktop Runner Lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Runner identity and crash-loop decisions
apps/desktop/scripts/dev-runner-guards.mjs, apps/desktop/scripts/dev-runner-guards.test.mjs
Runner records and process identities are validated. Takeover decisions and crash-loop behavior are covered by tests.
Runner process control and stop/reset tasks
apps/desktop/scripts/dev-runner-control.mjs, apps/desktop/scripts/stop-dev-electron.mjs, .config/mise/tasks/dev/desktop/*, apps/desktop/package.json
Runner processes and records are managed per checkout. Stop and reset commands stop the runner, and reset removes the Electron runtime.
Development runner lifecycle
apps/desktop/scripts/dev-electron.mjs, docs/operations/development.md
The development runner claims and releases records, monitors its parent process, controls failed restarts, and documents the lifecycle and recovery commands.

Worktree-Specific Dock Names

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve and apply worktree Dock names
apps/desktop/scripts/electron-launcher.mjs, apps/desktop/scripts/electron-launcher.test.mjs
The launcher derives labels for linked worktrees and applies them to development Dock and bundle metadata. Cached launcher metadata includes the Dock name. Tests cover label resolution and startup setup.

claimRunnerRecord so a non-null refusedPid aborts startup before the runner
record is claimed or overwritten. Preserve the existing stoppedPid logging and
only call claimRunnerRecord after takeover is successfully resolved.
- Line 161: Update the restart logic around crashLoopBreaker and scheduleRestart
so spawn errors from the app.once("error") handler count toward the same restart
limit as abnormal exit events. Ensure each child failure records exactly once,
then apply the shared breaker decision before scheduling a restart for either
failure path.
- Line 99: Capture initialParentPid before awaiting stopPreviousRunner, then
check for parent loss immediately after that await and before starting the app;
exit or follow the existing shutdown path when the parent PID is no longer
valid, while preserving the later parent-monitoring interval.

Review comments at @apps/desktop/scripts/dev-runner-control.mjs:
- Around line 72-74: Update the Windows branch in the dev-runner stop flow so it
does not return { stoppedPid: null } without taking action. Implement runner
inspection and termination for hostPlatform "win32", or explicitly fail the stop
task so reset cannot remove .electron-runtime while the runner remains active.
- Line 97: Update the runner ownership flow around runnerRecordPath and the
writeFileSync call to acquire an exclusive per-checkout lock before starting
Electron, atomically covering stale-record takeover and concurrent-start checks.
Keep that lock held for the runner’s lifetime and release it during shutdown,
rather than relying on the record write to claim ownership.

stopPreviousRunner to validate the runner executable and its script argument

rejecting unrelated commands such as tail -f.

Review comments at @apps/desktop/scripts/stop-dev-electron.mjs:
- Around line 12-15: Update the refusedPid branch in stop-dev-electron so runner
verification refusal sets a nonzero process exit status after leaving the
process untouched, preventing the dependent reset task from continuing.

apps/desktop/scripts/dev-electron.mjs:293-294
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep runner.json until shutdown cleanup completes.

shutdown() removes runner.json before stopApp() and the child cleanup run. If dev:desktop:reset runs during this interval, it can receive action: "none" and delete .electron-runtime while Electron is still stopping. Move releaseRunnerRecord(desktopDir) after the final child cleanup. The PID check in releaseRunnerRecord preserves a replacement runner's record.
