  • Users who keep settings in a dotfiles repository and link them into the T3 home lose the link on the first save from the app, so the repository silently stops reflecting the configuration in use.
  • The drift is invisible until someone notices the two copies disagree, and by then each has changes the other lacks.

PR Summary

Medium Risk
Changes shared writeFileStringAtomically (also used by CLI theme writes) and settings persistence/watch behavior, but non-symlink paths should behave the same.

Overview
Fixes a silent failure mode where saving settings through a symlink replaced the link with a regular file, so dotfiles-repo copies stopped updating on the first in-app save.

Atomic writes now resolve symlink chains (including dangling links) and rename onto the destination path, so the symlink at settingsPath is unchanged. The settings file watcher merges events from both the link’s directory and the target’s directory, so external edits to the real file still trigger reloads.

Adds focused tests for atomic write and server settings symlink scenarios, plus fork doc 0027.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The atomic writer now resolves the requested path before creating its temporary file and renaming it. Added tests cover writes through symlinks, missing nested paths, and settings updates through a symlink. Fork documentation records the change.

The writer resolves the requested path before choosing the temporary-file location and rename destination. Tests check symlink preservation and writes to missing nested paths. Fork records document the change.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 23d64

Saving settings through a working symlink now keeps the link intact. In the rare case of a broken link, saving may still replace it with a regular file. This is low risk and can be followed up after merge.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in apps/server/src/atomicWrite.test.ts: Added filesystem tests for atomic writes through a symlink and to a missing nested path. The tests assert that the symlink target remains unchanged and its destination contains the new contents, and that the missing-path write can be read back with the requested contents.
  • observed — Modified behavior in apps/server/src/atomicWrite.ts: Added a comment describing the sibling-temp-file rename and the intended handling of symlinked targets.
  • observed — Modified behavior in apps/server/src/atomicWrite.ts: The function now resolves the input path, falling back to the original path if realPath fails. It uses the selected path for the temporary-file directory and rename destination instead of always using the input path.
  • observed — Modified behavior in apps/server/src/serverSettings.test.ts: Added a test that creates a settings file, replaces the configured settings path with a symlink to it, and updates the settings. It asserts the configured path remains a symlink to the same target and that the target file contains the new response streaming mode.
