  • Queries had no way to ask for head-of-log reads: a caller without a version could only choose between stale eventual reads and misusing exact_version, which fails as soon as any other write lands.
  • Leaving the requirement unset was the only way to express eventual consistency, which hides intent in code review, logs, and traces.
  • The existing documentation did not state which event sourcing counter (stream version or global position) a version refers to, leaving services to guess and clients to pass the wrong one.

PR Summary

Medium Risk
Adds new proto oneof arms (backward compatible) but changes documented version semantics and server behavior expectations; mis-implementing fully_consistent or mismatched stream/global counters can cause wrong freshness or unsatisfiable requests.

Overview
Extends trogon.consistency.v1alpha1.Consistency with two new requirement modes: minimize_latency (explicit “no wait / stale OK”, same as unset) and fully_consistent (wait until the projection catches the log head observed at request time, for callers without a version).

Proto and docs now describe four SpiceDB-aligned modes with guarantees, caching, failures, and when to use each. version is documented as an int64 log position (stream revision or global position—must match the target projection’s checkpoint), not an opaque token; examples drop stream_version/uint64 in favor of version.

Server guidance is expanded: atomic position-with-result for retries, fully_consistent limits, NOT_FOUND handling under waiting modes, updated error metadata, and tracing attributes for all modes.

Walkthrough

The consistency protocol adds minimize_latency and fully_consistent. The documentation describes four consistency modes, their position requirements, waiting and cache behavior, failure outcomes, and operational guidance.

Clarify the server guidance before merging: it can return data that misses the requested consistency guarantee or turn a valid NOT_FOUND response into UNAVAILABLE.

- Line 170: Update the consistency guidance for NOT_FOUND under min_version,
exact_version, and fully_consistent: retry only while the result position is
below the required position, and return NOT_FOUND once that position is
satisfied. Keep retrying until timeout only for results that have not yet
reached the required position.
- Around line 156-158: Update the consistency-check sequence so each query is
bound to a projection snapshot and eligibility is checked against that
snapshot’s position, not a later checkpoint. Return results only when that
position satisfies min_version, fully_consistent, or exact_version; for
exact_version, reconstruct and query the required snapshot if possible,
otherwise return FAILED_PRECONDITION when the projection has passed it.
