Summary

  • ShellCommandImpl.#createResultPromise now runs the abort handler immediately when the signal is already aborted at the moment the 'abort' listener is attached.
  • Why: Shell.ts checks abortSignal.aborted before spawning, then awaits several setup steps (sandbox wrap, env overrides, output dir/file) before wrapSpawn. An abort that lands in that window was missed, because addEventListener('abort') never fires for a signal that is already aborted. The command then ran to completion and was reported as an ordinary failure (isAbort: false). This is the intermittent BashTool error output (#1231) > user-cancel abort ... timeout seen on main CI (shard 7, ShellError code 144, abortReason: "user-abort", isAbort: false).

Impact

  • user-facing impact: a cancel that arrives while a Bash command is still being set up now stops the command instead of letting it run to the end.
  • developer/maintainer impact: removes a timing-dependent failure in the BashTool cancel test. No timeouts raised, no tests weakened. The existing 'interrupt' survivor rules (backgrounded and keep-alive commands) are unchanged, since the same handler is invoked.

Testing

  • I ran the required local preflight.
  • exact commands and results:
    • bun run check:static: pass
    • bun run typecheck: pass
    • bun run scripts/run-tests.ts --shards=8 --shard-index=7 --feature=UNATTENDED_RETRY --max-concurrency=1: 3 runs, all pass (1216 pass, 0 fail)
    • bun test src/tools/BashTool/BashTool.errorOutput.test.ts src/utils/ShellCommand.test.ts: 20 runs, all pass (27 pass, 0 fail)
  • focused tests: new already-aborted user-cancel kills a real child promptly in src/utils/ShellCommand.test.ts spawns a real sleep 5 with an already-aborted signal and asserts it resolves quickly with isAbort: true, abortReason: 'user-abort' and interrupted: true. With the fix reverted it fails (isAbort is false, resolves only at the 1s tool timeout); with the fix it passes in about 17ms.
  • documented skipped checks, platform limitations, or verified pre-existing failures: full suite left to CI.

Notes

  • provider/model path tested: n/a (shell execution only)
  • screenshots attached (if UI changed): n/a
  • follow-up work or known limitations: no extra pre-spawn re-check in Shell.ts; the listener fix covers aborts at any point before or after spawn.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed an issue where shell commands could continue running when their cancellation signal had already been triggered.
    • Commands now stop promptly and report the correct cancellation status and reason when aborted before execution completes.
    • Improved handling of interrupted processes to ensure they are marked as terminated and do not remain running in the background.
    • Ensured cancellations requested before command completion are consistently recognized and handled.

Explanation

The PR touches shell child-process and background-execution behavior. The PR description identifies the cancellation race, states that backgrounded and keep-alive survivor rules remain unchanged, and reports no weakened tests or raised timeouts. No blocking risk is identified.

Full details: No Hidden Policy Change

Explanation

No hidden policy change found. The PR changes only src/utils/ShellCommand.ts and its test. The implementation invokes the existing abort handler when an already-aborted signal is observed after listener registration. The handler preserves the existing interrupt survivor rule and otherwise uses the existing kill path. No product routing, trust-model, telemetry/network, or permission-policy settings change.

Confirm the required pre-push validation.

CONTRIBUTING.md requires the full local preflight before every push, including bun run check, type tests, launcher checks, and the security scan. The supplied report lists focused checks and says the full suite was left to CI, but it does not establish whether the required preflight ran separately. Confirm the preflight results or document an applicable exception.

Merge readiness

  • Rebase: Head is one commit behind live main (ae83f6e4cf9201ef65ececd09b16c2d0de267879). Rebase before merge.
  • Draft PR: Still marked draft until you mark it ready for review.
  • CI: All required jobs green at head (unit-test shards, smoke-and-tests, dedicated-tests, typecheck, launcher compatibility, pr-intent-scan, CodeQL). No failing required checks.
  • Production abort fix: The three-line sync drain in ShellCommand.ts remains correct at head (no double-invocation on Node/Bun for already-aborted signals; handler safe after constructor init; omitting a second Shell.ts pre-spawn check is a deliberate spawn-cost tradeoff, not a lost cancel).

Findings

🟡 P2 — Use a portable long-lived child in the already-aborted regression test

📍 Where: src/utils/ShellCommand.test.ts — already-aborted user-cancel kills a real child promptly (line 133).

💥 What fails: The test spawns sleep, which is not on the standard Windows process PATH. On bare Windows the child errors before exercising cancellation, so the test fails for spawn/PID reasons instead of asserting abort semantics. That contradicts the test’s purpose and OpenClaude’s cross-platform product scope.

const child = spawn('sleep', ['5'], { stdio: 'ignore' })

🔎 Root cause: This file’s other cases use mock EventEmitter children; this is the only real spawn. It reuses a POSIX utility on PATH rather than the repo’s established long-lived-child pattern (process.execPath). Production bash may run sleep inside Git Bash, but this test bypasses Shell.exec and hits Node’s executable lookup directly.

📜 Stated contract:

Review tests for meaningful coverage of the changed behavior, isolation of global/env/config state, async cleanup, fake timers, provider profile leaks, and Windows-compatible assumptions.

🏷️ Attribution: PR-introduced. Merge-base had no this test; head adds the non-portable spawn.

📌 In this PR:

  • src/utils/ShellCommand.test.ts — spawn('sleep', ['5'], …) at line 133

🔒 Unchanged on main: ShellCommand.ts sync abort drain; no change required there for this finding.

🔧 Required correction: Spawn a JavaScript timer via process.execPath and -e, matching sibling tests such as runAgent.output.test.ts, and keep the same timing and abort assertions (elapsedMs < 2_000, isAbort, abortReason, interrupted, signalAborted, status === 'killed').

const child = spawn(
  process.execPath,
  ['-e', 'setInterval(() => {}, 1000)'],
  { stdio: 'ignore' },
)

Validation: Run bun test src/utils/ShellCommand.test.ts -t 'already-aborted' on the PR branch (Linux is sufficient for CI; optionally repeat on Windows cmd/PowerShell to confirm the spawn no longer depends on sleep).

🛠️ Author fix: Replace the sleep spawn with the process.execPath -e timer above in this test only; leave assertions unchanged.

🚫 Out of scope: Rewriting other ShellCommand mock tests, changing Shell.ts, or repo-wide Windows CI matrix expansion.

Scope: Re-reviewed ae83f6e4cf9201ef65ececd09b16c2d0de267879..13319ad29b73be9e242fd1b6351c22d3a10609f9 (live-base-three-dot on rebased main). Two commits, two files (ShellCommand.ts, ShellCommand.test.ts), +43 lines. Head pinned at 13319ad29b73be9e242fd1b6351c22d3a10609f9.

Follow-up on prior review

The prior P2 asked for a portable long-lived child: process.execPath with -e and setInterval, keeping the under-2s and abort assertions. Verified fixed at this head — matches the pattern in runAgent.output.test.ts, replaces sleep, and bun test src/utils/ShellCommand.test.ts passes (6/6, including already-aborted user-cancel kills a real child promptly in ~17ms). Revert of the production sync drain still fails the new test (isAbort: false at tool timeout).

Production change unchanged from the first commit: three-line sync #boundAbortHandler() when abortSignal.aborted at listener attach. Rebase onto ae83f6e4 introduced no additional hunks beyond the portability test commit.

Merge readiness

  • Rebase: Complete — merge-base equals live main; behind_default_count is 0.
  • Mergeability: mergeable_state: clean at head (draft flag may still block the GitHub merge button until the PR is marked ready).
