test(cli): pin sandbox policy golden temp roots - #1139
Conversation
TestRunSandboxPolicyJSONGoldenIncludesManagerBaselineFields compared the policy snapshot to a fixed golden after stripping only the temp roots NewScope keeps. NewScope drops a candidate that sits inside an earlier one, while the JSON (built with a nil scope) still lists it, so a TMPDIR inside /tmp — or TMP inside TEMP on Windows — survived normalization and failed the golden. Pin the variables that path reads (TMPDIR on Unix, TEMP and TMP on Windows) and cover a nested temp dir that is not inside the earlier candidate, so the normalizer removes it instead of leaving it in the JSON. Refs Twigpine#1121
The nested golden created its temp dir in the package working directory and failed when that path sat inside /tmp, so a checkout under /tmp could not run it and the test wrote into the source tree. Stage the issue's shape first — TMPDIR inside /tmp, or TMP inside TEMP — then let the pin override those variables. Directories come from t.TempDir. If the nested shape cannot be built, skip. Thank you for taking a look. A note on CI so it does not get in the way of review. The only red job is This PR only touches Could a maintainer re-run the failed job when convenient? I am not pushing an empty commit to re-trigger it. |
Summary
Makes
TestRunSandboxPolicyJSONGoldenIncludesManagerBaselineFieldshermetic by pinning the temp variables the policy snapshot reads, and adds a nested-temp case for the shape described in #1121. Test-only. The golden normalizer is unchanged.Linked issue
Closes #1121
The parent issue has the
issue-approvedlabel.Problem
TestRunSandboxPolicyJSONGoldenIncludesManagerBaselineFields(internal/cli/sandbox_test.go) compareszero sandbox policy --jsonto a fixed golden after stripping temp roots. It fails when the process temp directory is nested inside an earlier candidate.Repro from the issue:
The failing shape is narrower than "any non-default
TMPDIR". On Unix it isTMPDIRinside/tmp(for exampleTMPDIR=/tmp/user/<uid>/...). On Windows it isTMPinsideTEMP.Cause
The normalizer already removes every temp root that
sandbox.NewScope(workspace, nil).Roots()reports beyond the workspace.NewScopedrops a candidate that sits inside an earlier one. The policy JSON is built with a nil scope and still lists that inner root, so the normalizer leaves it inreadRootsandwriteRootsand the golden mismatches. That is the case the maintainer reproduced on the issue:
/tmpfollowed by aTMPDIRunder/tmp. The Windows equivalent isTEMPset to a directory andTMPset to a folder inside it:NewScopereports only the outer directory and the inner one survives. Reversing that order keeps both, and the test passes. The production behavior (including the extra temp root in the policy) is correct. This is a test hermeticity bug.
Fix
Test-only, in
internal/cli/sandbox_test.go. The normalizer is not taught about nesting.pinSandboxPolicyGoldenTempEnvruns before anyt.TempDirthat could leak into the snapshot. On Unix it setsTMPDIRto empty witht.Setenv, so the only candidate is the hard-coded/tmp. On Windows it setsTEMPandTMPto the samet.TempDir()directory, so neither is nested in the other.XDG_RUNTIME_DIRis not a temp write-root candidate and is left alone.TestRunSandboxPolicyJSONGoldenNestedTempDirstages the issue's shape first, then applies the same pin. On Unix the staged path is a directory fromt.TempDir()that resolves inside/tmp, exported asTMPDIR. On Windows it isTMPinsideTEMP, both fromt.TempDir(). After the pin, the golden matches and the staged path must not appear in the normalized JSON./tmp, or/tmpis not a directory), the nested test skips. Directories come fromt.TempDir(), not from the package working directory. Before / after
Before: an ambient
TMPDIRinside/tmp, orTMPinsideTEMP, survives normalization and the golden fails. After: the golden pins those variables for the duration of the test. The nested case stages the leaking shape, then pins over it, and asserts the inner path is gone from the normalized policy. A temp layout that cannot reproduce the nested shape skips that case.
Tests
TestRunSandboxPolicyJSONGoldenIncludesManagerBaselineFields.TestRunSandboxPolicyJSONGoldenNestedTempDir.Locally, on this branch:
gofmton the file,go vetofinternal/cli, andgo test ./internal/cli/ -run Golden -race. The fullgo test ./...suite is not claimed here.internal/cliwith-raceis long; that package run already passed in an earlier local round. The same change, on the fork, went through CI on FabioLeitao/zero#13 (merged as
aa14f17e), including the Linux unit/race jobs and the smoke jobs on Ubuntu, macOS, and Windows. Windows was not run locally.Risk
No production code changes. A Unix environment whose temp dir is not inside
/tmpskips the nested case; the pinned golden still runs. The pin usest.Setenv, so it does not leak into other tests. How to verify
Unset
TMPDIR, set it to/tmp, and set it to a directory inside/tmp. The pinned golden should pass in each case. The nested test skips when its temp dir cannot be placed inside/tmp.Scope
