160+ video editing tools for your AI agent, over the Model Context Protocol. Shorz is a free-to-download Windows desktop app that ships a full MCP server inside the installer — connect it once and your agent can auto-edit long videos, clip a podcast into shorts, add subtitles, generate avatars and thumbnails, and schedule the result to YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Threads and Pinterest.
This is Shorz MCP — the Model Context Protocol server that ships inside the free Shorz desktop app, turning any MCP-capable agent into an AI video editing agent.
Coding agents got good. Video agents didn't — because they had no hands. Shorz gives them hands.
The Shorz desktop app is an AI video editor for Windows (macOS in progress). Every install includes a standalone MCP server — no separate package, no API keys to wire up, no subscription. Point Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, Codex or Gemini at it and the agent gets the same controls a human editor has in the app:
- 6 project types — Auto Edit Video, Text-to-Video, Avatar, Podcast, Advertisement, Clipping
- Headless single-file edits — trim, crop, resize, concat, speed, reverse, fades, audio extraction and more, straight on loose files with no project needed (these run locally and are free)
- Panels — subtitles + dubbing, B-roll, animated titles, borders, overlays, audio visualizers, thumbnails, Animation Studio motion graphics
- Publishing — post or schedule to YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Threads, Pinterest
- Live UI control — the agent can drive the actual app window, with a visible cursor
144 of the 160 tools are free to run. The rest are AI generation tools that spend prepaid Shorz credits from your signed-in account (1 credit = €0.01, packs from €19.90, credits never expire, no subscription) — and every tool's cost is labeled in the catalog below, so your agent can check the price before spending anything. One tool (validate_elevenlabs_api_key) uses your own ElevenLabs key, and only if you want your own cloned voice.
Vibe create videos at the speed of ideas.
- Get Shorz — free download, no card — install and sign in.
- Open Connect AI Agent in the app header. Pick your client — Shorz writes the MCP config for you with one click (Cursor, Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex, Antigravity) and can install the agent skills too.
- Restart your agent and ask it for something:
"Take podcast.mp4, make a 9:16 project, turn subtitles on, and render it."
Shorz must be running — the app hosts the bridge the MCP server talks to.
The server ships at %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Shorz\resources\mcp-server\index.js (Node.js required). The app's Connect AI Agent modal prints your exact path and copies it to the clipboard.

gemini mcp add shorz -- node "C:\Users\you\AppData\Local\Programs\Shorz\resources\mcp-server\index.js"Real prompts that map onto real tool chains — every one of these works with the tools below:
| Prompt | What happens |
|---|---|
| "Make a 9:16 project from podcast.mp4, turn subtitles on, add AI B-roll, and render it." | Podcast → vertical short with subtitles and B-roll |
| "Trim ad.mp4 to 0:12–0:41, crop it to 9:16, fade the audio out at the end, and save it to my Desktop." | Headless file edit — no project, runs locally, free |
| "Check my Shorz balance first, then generate four thumbnail options for the title 'I quit my job'." | Agent checks cost before spending a credit |
| "Build a Text-to-Video project from script.md, use this photo as the character reference so she looks the same in every scene, then render it." | Consistent-character video from a script |
| "Tell me what it costs to publish today's render to TikTok, Instagram and YouTube — then schedule all three for 6pm." | Priced, then scheduled to three platforms |
| "Find five Pexels drone clips of a coastline, download them, and import them into my project's B-roll lane." | Stock sourcing → B-roll, end to end |
| "What's getting traction on X about AI video this week? Take the strongest angle, write a 30-second script, and set it as my brief." | Research → script → project brief |
| "Make an avatar video from headshot.jpg reading this script, add two more angles of the same avatar, and put subtitles on it." | Talking-head video from one photo |
The app download is free. On top of that, signed-in users get a real free tier: Auto Edit and Clipping, 4 free videos a week (resets Monday, no card, source videos up to 30 minutes). Everything that spends credits stays locked on the free tier — and Text-to-Video, Avatar, Podcast and Advertisement are paid features.
What Shorz never does, on any tier: watermark your output. There is no watermark to remove, at any price, on anything.
MCP exposes the tools; agent skills teach your agent how to use them well — the workflows, the panel order, the cost checks, the gotchas. The agent-skills/shorz-mcp folder in this repo is the same skill bundle every Shorz install ships:
SKILL.md— the operating manual for driving Shorz over MCPreferences/project-workflows/— end-to-end recipes per project typereferences/panel-workflows/— every panel (subtitles, B-roll, titles, borders, overlays, audio, thumbnails…)references/headless-workflows/— loose-file editing, stock media, X research, free image generationreferences/guided-creation/— interview-style flows that turn a vague idea into a finished spec
Install from the app (Connect AI Agent → Install skills now) or copy the folder into your client's skill directory (~/.claude/skills/, ~/.cursor/skills/, ~/.agents/skills/, or ~/.gemini/ for Antigravity).
Claude user? There's a dedicated install guide at Vossy/claude-video-editing-skill.
Cost column: Free = runs locally or against the app bridge at no cost · Shorz credits = AI generation billed from your prepaid balance (the agent can price it first) · Your own key = optional ElevenLabs key for voice cloning.

Is Shorz free? The download is free and 144 of the 160 MCP tools run at no cost. There's also a real free tier — Auto Edit and Clipping, 4 videos a week, no card. AI generation beyond that runs on prepaid credits (1 credit = €0.01, packs from €19.90, credits never expire). No subscription, and no watermark on anything, ever.
Which AI agents work with it? Anything that speaks MCP over stdio: Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, Codex, Antigravity, Gemini CLI — the app writes the config for most of these with one click.
Do I need API keys? No. The agent uses your signed-in Shorz account. The one optional key is ElevenLabs, and only if you want your own cloned voice.
Can the agent publish videos for me? Yes — post now or schedule to YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Threads and Pinterest, after you connect the accounts in the app. Publishing tools report their cost before running.
What models power the generation tools?
Leading models like Claude, GPT, Veo, Seedance, Kling, Nano Banana and ElevenLabs — the lineup is server-driven and current pricing is always visible to the agent via get_shorz_usage_and_pricing.
Does this work on macOS or Linux? Windows today; macOS is in progress. The MCP server itself is plain Node.js, but it needs the running desktop app next to it.
Where does the tool list come from?
Straight from the server's tools/list — the same catalog the app documents at shorz.ai/tools/mcp. If a tool is in this README, it's registered in the shipped app.
