Why is cross-origin storage important for your use case?
The United States Code, the codified laws of the United States, is published as pdfs and XML files by the Office of Law Revision Counsel, as an official government source. This is the essential, official data for federal legal work in the US. With cross-origin storage, third party developers could provide an improved user interface and experience, while serving the original, official documents.
This is an example of the more general use case of government data being repackaged and reused (eg weather apps based on NOAA data.
An example of how the same data can be applied in different sites is visible by comparing the official site (uscode.house.gov) and my conceptual re-envisioning: uscode.linkedlegislation.org. With the cross-origin proposal, the source data for both could be the same, legitimate, official source, rather than a copy with unknown provenance.
