Walkeremote – Stepper to Brushless Motor Control Adapter Description
This project was born from the curiosity to understand whether it was possible to extend the capabilities of common low-cost Chinese surveillance cameras and use them not only as static devices, but also as small mobile surveillance rovers.
The idea was to take advantage of the electronics already present inside the camera, which normally controls small stepper motors used for moving the camera head, and reinterpret those control signals in order to drive a traction system based on motors.
The experiment turned out to be successful.
Below is a description of how the system works and the approach used to transform the camera control signals into commands capable of driving two motors.
Project idea
Many inexpensive PTZ cameras use stepper motors driven by a ULN2803 driver to control the movement of the camera head (up, down, left, right).
The internal controller of the camera generates digital sequences that activate the coils of the stepper motors.
In this project these sequences are not used to directly drive the stepper motors. Instead, they are:
intercepted
decoded
converted into motion commands
These commands are then used to drive two motors through an L298N driver, allowing the camera control system to operate a small rover platform.
Future extensions
The code will be further extended to support additional command combinations from the control pad.
By detecting combinations of movement commands, it will be possible to trigger additional functions such as controlling relays or other external devices.
For example:
a small relay could be used to bypass the camera head movement from the brushless motor movement, allowing the camera to move independently again
additional relays could be activated to control other functions or peripherals
This approach will allow the system to become more flexible and expandable, enabling multiple features to be controlled through the same original camera interface.
