Public Health - Exploration of Various Health Factors in the United States

Authors

  • Alison Case
  • Leonard Kendall

Description

This interactive web application leverages D3.js to visualize potential relationships between various health outcomes (e.g., diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol) and health risk behaviors (e.g., physical inactivity) across U.S. counties. Using data from the CDC Places Survey, the app enables users—such as public health officials, health policy analysts, and the general public—to explore geographic trends and relationships between health factors.

Key features include:

  • A bivariate choropleth map that allows users to select and compare one health outcome and one health risk behavior.
  • Case studies with supplemental data visualizations and narratives to highlight the utility of the tool.

The app is designed to help communities pinpoint local health challenges, target disparities, understand interconnected needs, guide resource allocations, and set meaningful health goals. This project was developed collaboratively in GitHub as part of the Interactive Cartography and Geovisualization course at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Dependencies

  • D3.js: For creating interactive visualizations.
  • CDC Places Survey Data: Publicly available health data.
  • GitHub Pages: For hosting the web application.
