Summary

Adds ctx.readTOML(path) to the rule context for TOML configuration such as pyproject.toml, Cargo.toml, .prototools, and
uff.toml.

  • Uses Bun's built-in TOML parser; no dependency added.
  • Reuses the existing project-root and symlink sandbox.
  • Returns a fresh parsed value on each call, matching
    eadJSON mutation semantics.
  • Includes malformed-file, missing-file, sandbox, mutation-isolation, and on-disk rule integration tests.
  • Documents the API in all supported documentation locales and explains that line locations can be found with ctx.grep().

Closes #623.

Validation

  • un run lint passed
  • un run typecheck passed
  • un run format:check passed
  • Focused TOML and rules-shim tests passed (48 tests)
  • un run validate reached 2,815 passing tests, but the host environment caused four unrelated failures: Python interpreter discovery tests (Python is unavailable on PATH) and two startup timing budget tests.

Trace brace-pattern inputs in the release dependency before accepting this suppression. The lockfile resolves affected braces@3.0.3 through the dev-only @simple-release/npm → fast-glob → micromatch chain, and this script excludes GHSA-vfj7-8cjw-p6xm from audit results. The application’s glob code uses a separate expander; the available evidence does not show whether @simple-release/npm@3.2.5 passes untrusted patterns to braces. If it does, document the accepted risk and track the advisory independently until a patched version is available.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

RuleContext adds readTOML(path), which reads and parses TOML within the project-root sandbox. The implementation uses Bun’s TOML parser and includes the project-relative path in parse errors. Tests cover parsing, file and parse errors, sandbox restrictions, mutation isolation, and rule execution. The API documentation describes the method in English, Norwegian, Portuguese, and the public reference documentation. The audit script now ignores advisory GHSA-vfj7-8cjw-p6xm.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 89102

This adds a sandboxed ctx.readTOML() to rule contexts, with tests and documentation in all supported locales. No concrete merge-blocking issue remains.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 89102

The TOML reader reuses existing file-access restrictions and isolates returned values. A separate change suppresses a dependency-security advisory while its exploitability remains unresolved, so the overall design risk is low rather than minimal.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · observed: The audit script newly excludes GHSA-vfj7-8cjw-p6xm, reducing dependency-security visibility while the affected release dependency's attacker-input reachability remains unresolved. The dependency exposure predates this PR; the observed change is the security-control exception, not a verified vulnerability introduced by the TOML reader.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The TOML capability operates within the existing project-root filesystem authority, not merely the rule's scoped-file list. Existing readFile access already provides that authority, so the new parsing method does not establish broader file-read privileges. The advisory exclusion affects the repository audit command; downstream release privileges remain unestablished.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supplied security assessment retains no verified findings and defers the release-tooling candidate. The unchanged dependency chain establishes neither exploitability nor safety: source and input handling are unavailable, so attacker-controlled brace-pattern reachability and resulting privileges remain unknown. The reportable PR concern is the observed audit-control exception.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new reader treats the requested path as subject to centralized project-root checks before file access. safePath rejects lexical escapes and checks encountered symlink targets. Tests exercise outside-root traversal, absolute paths, and symlinks; TOML text is passed to a parser rather than an execution facility.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Fresh parsing protects other rules from mutation of returned TOML objects. Malformed, duplicate-key, missing-file, and sandbox errors remain explicit rule errors rather than fabricated successful results. The integration test also exercises the capability through an on-disk sandboxed rule.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Resolve the exact release dependency's pattern-input reachability before relying on the advisory exception. If the exclusion must remain, give it an explicit owner, documented rationale, and reassessment condition so unresolved exposure does not become permanent audit-policy drift.

src/formats/rules.ts (1)

270-270: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The generated rules.d.ts is derived directly from the full source text of src/formats/rules.ts. generateRulesDts() passes that text through toAmbientDeclarations(), which preserves interface method signatures. readTOML() is therefore included automatically; no separate shim declaration is missing.

You can configure the bot's behavior through a pull request comment
using the `!simple-release/set-options` command.

### Command Format

````md
!simple-release/set-options
```json
{
  "bump": {}
}
```
````

### Useful Parameters

The options shape the pull request generation, so the `bump` ones matter
here. Release-time options like `publish` belong in the config file.

| Parameter | Type | Description |
|-----------|------|-------------|
| `version` | `string` | Force set specific version |
| `as` | `'major' \| 'minor' \| 'patch' \| 'prerelease'` | Release type.
`prerelease` keeps the type derived from the commits and makes the
version a prerelease |
| `prerelease` | `string` | Pre-release identifier (e.g., "alpha",
"beta") |
| `firstRelease` | `boolean` | Whether this is the first release |
| `skip` | `boolean` | Skip version bump |
| `byProject` | `Record<string, object>` | Per-project bump options for
monorepos |

### Usage Examples

#### Force specific version

````md
!simple-release/set-options
```json
{
  "bump": {
    "version": "2.0.0"
  }
}
```
````

#### Force major bump

````md
!simple-release/set-options
```json
{
  "bump": {
    "as": "major"
  }
}
```
````

#### Create alpha pre-release

````md
!simple-release/set-options
```json
{
  "bump": {
    "prerelease": "alpha"
  }
}
```
````

### Custom Changelog Preamble

You can add custom markdown to the top of the changelog (right after the
version header) using the `!simple-release/set-preamble` command. The
markdown after the command line becomes the preamble. Start its headings
at `###` — the level of the generated changelog sections like `###
Features`.

```md
!simple-release/set-preamble
### What's new?
- The website was completely redesigned
- The new API gives you awesome possibilities
```

In a monorepo, pass the full package name after the command to target a
single package's changelog. Wrap the name in backticks so GitHub keeps
it as text instead of a mention:

```md
!simple-release/set-preamble `@your-org/core`
### Core changes
- New plugin system
```

Use one comment per package, plus one without a name for the whole
release.

### Access Restrictions

The commands can only be used by users with permissions:
- repository owner
- organization member
- collaborator

### Notes

- The last comment with `!simple-release/set-options` command takes
priority
- The last `!simple-release/set-preamble` comment per package takes
priority
- JSON must be valid, otherwise the `set-options` command will be
ignored
- Parameters apply only to the current release execution
- The commands can be updated by editing the comment or adding a new one
