feat: distribute the Windows CLI through the Microsoft Store - #631
rhuanbarreto wants to merge 17 commits into
Conversation
Package the compiled Windows binary as an MSIX and publish it to the Microsoft Store, which signs it and surfaces it in winget through the msstore source. `winget install --id 9MSZ1ZDKSW8Z` becomes the Windows install command. - distribution/msix: manifest, logos, Store product ID, and a build script that packs the binary with makeappx - upgrade and the update notice send a Store install to `winget upgrade`, since the package directory is read-only - install.ps1 runs `winget install` first and keeps the direct download for machines where winget is missing or blocked, CI, and pinned versions or directories - release-binaries.yml uploads the MSIX; publish-shims.yml submits it with the Microsoft Store Developer CLI - remove the Go-shim winget package and its winget-pkgs submission - ARCH-013 syncs the manifest version; ARCH-017 gains a store-identity rule covering the product ID, install.ps1, and the install pages Signed-off-by: Rhuan Barreto <rhuan@barreto.work>

Review comments at @install.ps1:
- Line 40: Update the winget invocation in the installer so a nonzero native
exit code does not terminate the script when
`$PSNativeCommandUseErrorActionPreference` is enabled. Capture the exit code for
that invocation, then preserve the existing `$LASTEXITCODE` success check and
direct-download fallback behavior.
Review comments at @src/commands/upgrade.ts:
- Line 445: Update the Store branch that prints STORE_UPGRADE_COMMAND so it does
not call exitWith(0) while the installed version remains unchanged; return a
nonzero exit status when manual action is required.
Review comments at @tests/helpers/update-check.test.ts:
- Line 151: Ensure the `methodSpy` lifecycle in this test restores the spy even
when an assertion fails; wrap the assertions in `try/finally` and call
`methodSpy.mockRestore()` in the `finally` block.

Learning: In this Bun + TypeScript repo, for rejected-promise assertions use the unawaited form: `expect(promise).rejects.toThrow(...)`. Do NOT add `await` to `expect(promise).rejects.toThrow(...)` (Bun’s types model this as `void`), because it will violate the type-aware oxlint rules `typescript(await-thenable)` and `typescript(no-confusing-void-expression)`. Only request an `await` if the repo adopts a typed, lint-compliant assertion helper or Bun’s typings change.

v1.4tag is an exact release tag, not a floating patch alias. It resolves directly to commitcc9910a8d59f2eb55cbb83df0a3800cf3b5300e0, which matches the workflow pin. No correction is needed.
A Store install cannot replace itself, so `archgate upgrade` prints the winget command and exits 1 instead of reporting an upgrade that did not happen. install.ps1 reads winget's exit code even when the session turns native failures into errors, and the update-check test restores its spy on assertion failure. Replace the Microsoft Store Developer CLI, which authenticates only with a client secret or certificate, with a small client for the Store submission API. The publish job signs in to Microsoft Entra through the microsoft-store environment's OIDC token and passes the resulting access token to publish.ts, so the repository stores no Partner Center secret.

The Store denied unvirtualizedResources. From Windows 10 1903, the package's minimum, a packaged app's edits to existing files under %APPDATA% reach the real file; only files it creates there are redirected. A Store install therefore edits VS Code's user settings in place and, when that file does not exist yet, prints the setting to add instead of creating it. ## Validation Gate
**`bun run validate` must pass before any task is considered complete.** Fail-fast pipeline: lint → typecheck → format:check → test → ADR check → knip → build check. Mirrors CI in `.github/workflows/code-pull-request.yml`.

## Compliance and Enforcement
### Manual
Code reviewers MUST verify new shims download (never bundle) the binary, add zero runtime dependencies, share the `~/.archgate/bin/` cache, and register their version file in `.simple-release.js` and the ARCH-013 companion rule. Changes to `distribution/msix/` MUST keep the compiled binary as the package payload and declare no restricted capability beyond `runFullTrust`. New code that writes under `%APPDATA%` MUST handle a Store install, where only edits to existing files reach the real file.

## Do's and Don'ts
### Don't
- Don't create a file under `%APPDATA%` from a Store install — it lands in package-private storage, invisible to the program meant to read it

Learning: In archgate/cli TypeScript code, use `Bun.file(path).exists()` only to check whether a file exists; it must not be used for directory existence checks. For helpers such as `isCopilotAvailable()` that need to detect a configuration directory, use an appropriate directory-aware check such as `existsSync` from `node:fs`.

The Store rejects a package version whose first part is 0. Release x.y.z now ships as (x+1).y.z.0, which keeps every release valid and in order; the bump hook, build script and ARCH-013 rule apply the same mapping. The publish test asserts each request's signal instead of a collapsed boolean. Signed-off-by: Rhuan Barreto <rhuan@barreto.work>

#647) ## Problem and behavior Windows binary upgrades can report Sentry CLI-D when `powershell` is absent from PATH. ZIP extraction resolves Windows PowerShell on PATH, then `%SystemRoot%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe` (falling back to `C:\Windows` for unusable SystemRoot). Missing PowerShell raises an actionable `UserError` before spawn. ZIP packaging, checksum verification, archive validation, replacement, cleanup, and unrelated internal-error handling are preserved. PowerShell Core support remains outside this change. CLI-C is verification only: deleted-cwd review-context exits 1 with an actionable message and no Sentry capture; an unrelated TypeError exits 2 and is captured. The production fix from #621 is already on main and was first published in v0.58.1. Sentry references (unchanged): https://archgate.sentry.io/issues/155567289/ and https://archgate.sentry.io/issues/150086449/. ## Scope Two commits, three files: `src/helpers/binary-upgrade.ts`, `tests/helpers/binary-upgrade-archive.test.ts`, and `tests/commands/review-context-cwd.test.ts`. No #631 Store/distribution work or #641 overlap. Base: `fd92933ccad95468772b1aec18cda0f959394450`. Head: `f44a5f2f92c58921f8a33af6b8f0ef263e0c8ba9`, with first commit `edc0cbc73a88c28fae6fdfdaeaaeb9494e8e11cf`. Tree: `55b2060a97c8dbc84d9f1404e7f75a8cc78c546d`, identical to independently reviewed head `327b2145118905e62e11efeb564fc42e3c7c0a61`. ## Actual full CI Marked ready for review to invoke the workflow's supported `ready_for_review` event. Draft conditions previously skipped validation/smoke jobs, causing the aggregate to fail. No workflow rules, required checks, test gates, or skips were changed. [Full Validate run on the unchanged tree at f44a5f2](https://github.com/archgate/cli/actions/runs/40098167162) **PASSED**, including: - Linux full `validate:coverage`: 2,963 passed, 22 existing skips, zero failures; lint, typecheck, formatting, ADR checks (22 passed), Knip, compilation, dependency audit, and generated-doc verification passed. - Windows full coverage suite: 2,961 passed, 22 existing skips, zero failures; lint/typecheck/formatting, compiled binary and installer smoke job passed. - Linux smoke, workflow security/schema, ADR SARIF, merged coverage threshold, and aggregate Validate Code passed. Shim tests used the workflow's existing conditional skip because no shim files changed. - Required DCO is blocked: both original commits lack Signed-off-by trailers. A worker briefly added matching-author trailers, then removed them after confirming that matching global Git configuration does not establish authority to certify for that contributor. Contributor certification under DCO 1.1 is required before sign-off can be added. No DCO bypass or policy change is proposed. Latest results are available in [PR checks](https://github.com/archgate/cli/pull/647/checks). ## Additional verification and limitations Test-first CLI-D regressions failed against the unchanged extractor and passed with the fix. Scoped suite: 104 passed, three platform skips, zero failures. Coverage includes PATH precedence, custom/unset/empty/literal-undefined SystemRoot, missing shell, extraction cleanup, and preservation of unrelated spawn errors. A real Windows ZIP probe with PowerShell excluded from PATH verified SHA256 and extracted payload. Independent ADR review found no code issues. Prior local full `bun run validate` runs FAILED and are not represented as passing. The bounded Windows comparison had patch 2,921 passed / 39 skipped / 23 failed, versus clean main 2,911 / 39 / 24. All 23 patch failure names also appeared on baseline: 18 Antigravity reader cases, one credential-helper case, and four startup budgets. Both standalone startup runs passed six tests, but differing host load leaves timing attribution inconclusive. CI's fresh full Linux and Windows coverage runs above passed without changing those unrelated suites or weakening gates. Ready for review; no approval or merge performed. Sentry issues remain unchanged. --------- Signed-off-by: Rhuan Barreto <rhuan@barreto.work>
