Why

ARCH-025 forbids loops that stand in for test.each(), and names an oxlint plugin as its enforcement layer while marking it unimplemented. Reviewers have been the only check; the fix for #630 shipped one such loop that a reviewer had to catch by hand. This adds the rule.

The rule: test-cases/no-loop-test-cases

lint/no-loop-test-cases.ts, registered in .oxlintrc.json and enabled as an error for tests/**/*.test.ts. It follows the no-lowered-test-timeout pattern (a Program visitor with an explicit walk context, so it works on both the oxlint AST and meriyah's in the unit harness). Three shapes, each message ending in (ARCH-025):

  1. Registration inside a loop — test()/it()/describe() (any chain, outermost call only) lexically inside for/for...in/for...of/while/do...while or an iteration callback (.forEach, .map, .flatMap, .filter, .some, .every). Only genuine bun:test chains count (test.skip, test.each(rows)(...), describe.only), so a loop variable named it or test is not a registration. Nested registrations under a reported one are not re-reported.
  2. expect() over rows that exist at registration time — a for...of or iteration callback over a non-empty array literal, or a const NAME = [...] binding visible from the test (module, describe, or test scope; as const/satisfies unwrapped). Reported once per loop; test.each(rows) always applies here.
  3. A loop carrying a test's only expect() calls — an empty collection would assert nothing. Reported once per loop.

Not reported: a runtime-derived loop of per-item expect()s with an assertion on the collection outside the loop (the sanctioned guarded shape, including Promise.all(items.map(...))); loops inside hooks or describe bodies; an empty const found = [] accumulator is runtime-derived, not static rows.

The plugin is named test-cases because oxlint refuses a second plugin file named bun-test ("Plugin name 'bun-test' is already registered").

What it caught

Six existing loops, converted 1:1 (every per-iteration assertion still runs per case):

  • tests/formats/adr-fuzz.test.ts — five shape-2 loops over local const input arrays → test.each([...])("… (%j)").
  • tests/engine/check-case.test.ts — one shape-3 loop over schemeKeys(cases) → test.each(schemeKeys(cases))("… (%s)").

Fire-tested from the CLI with a throwaway file holding one instance of each shape: three findings naming the rule, then a clean run after deleting it.

ADR

ARCH-025: Compliance → Automated Enforcement describes the rule and its three shapes; the Don'ts align with the Decision (static rows → test.each; a loop never carries a test's only expect(); a guarded runtime-derived loop is allowed); the remaining risk and the unenforced pattern are the boolean-collapse Don'ts (no-boolean-collapse is the follow-up). rules: false stays — no companion .rules.ts.

Tests

tests/lint/no-loop-test-cases.test.ts — 31 cases through the same parse-and-visit harness the other plugin tests use.

`test-cases/no-loop-test-cases` is an oxlint JS plugin enabled as an
error for `tests/**/*.test.ts`. It reports a `test()`/`it()`/`describe()`
registered inside a loop or iteration callback, an `expect()` looped
over rows that exist at registration time (a non-empty array literal or
a `const` array visible from the test, `as const`/`satisfies` unwrapped),
and a loop that carries a test's only `expect()` calls. A runtime-derived
loop guarded by an assertion on the collection is not reported.

Six existing loops become `test.each` tables, 1:1. ARCH-025 describes
the rule as its automated enforcement and keeps boolean collapse as the
remaining unenforced pattern.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds an Oxlint rule that detects specified loop-based test registrations and assertions, and enables it for test files. The ADR documents the rule’s scope and manual-review cases. Rule tests cover violations and exclusions. Selected tests now use parameterized cases. Developer memory guidance adds checks for ADR claims, hook-created worktrees, and regression testing.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to ea53c

A narrow shadowing case can make the new test lint rule reject a guarded runtime loop. The change is mergeable with this false positive addressed or accepted.

289-289: Guarded detection counts every expect outside a loop, including expects in nested helper callbacks.

finishTest skips the only-assertions report when any ExpectSite has loops.length === 0. A nested non-loop function, such as const check = (x) => expect(x)... or a run(items, cb) callback, also records an expect with no loops. Assume a test body holds results.forEach(check) and a helper with that expect. The rule treats the helper's expect as a guard, but that expect only runs inside the loop. The result is a false negative, not a crash. Bodies of this kind are uncommon, so I am not raising this as a defect.

29-29: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The check preemption claim is supported. check awaits loadRuleAdrs() before calling runChecks(). loadRuleAdrs() invokes generateRulesDts() before rule loading. A generation error therefore reaches the command error boundary before any rule runs. No narrowing is required.

An `attempt()` helper captures either the parser result or the thrown
value, and each fuzz table asserts on the matching branch, so an
assertion failure is never swallowed by the catch that checks the
parser error. The memory note on hook-created worktrees orders the
foreign-file check before the commit it protects.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Resolve static rows by lexical binding, not identifier name.

collectStaticArrays stores only id.name in one shared set. Therefore, a static const ROWS = [...] in module or describe scope makes a shadowing runtime-derived ROWS appear static in another scope. isStaticRows then reports the for...of loop before the outside-expectation guard runs. This produces a false-positive lint error for a guarded runtime loop.

Use lexical binding identity or a scope-aware declaration map for static-row lookup. Add a regression case with shadowing and an outside expectation.

The concern is refuted. ensureRulesShim() calls generateRulesDts() before loadRuleAdrs() parses ADRs. check awaits loadRuleAdrs() before calling runChecks(). Any generation error reaches handleCommandError(), which exits instead of returning, so it preempts rule execution.

!simple-release/set-options

```json
{
  "bump": {
    "prerelease": "alpha"
  }
}
```
````
### Custom Changelog Preamble
You can add custom markdown to the top of the changelog (right after the
version header) using the `!simple-release/set-preamble` command. The
markdown after the command line becomes the preamble. Start its headings
at `###` — the level of the generated changelog sections like `###
Features`.
```md
!simple-release/set-preamble

### What's new?

- The website was completely redesigned
- The new API gives you awesome possibilities
```
In a monorepo, pass the full package name after the command to target a
single package's changelog. Wrap the name in backticks so GitHub keeps
it as text instead of a mention:
```md
!simple-release/set-preamble `@your-org/core`

### Core changes

- New plugin system
```
Use one comment per package, plus one without a name for the whole
release.
### Access Restrictions
The commands can only be used by users with permissions:
- repository owner
- organization member
- collaborator
### Notes
- The last comment with `!simple-release/set-options` command takes
priority
- The last `!simple-release/set-preamble` comment per package takes
priority
- JSON must be valid, otherwise the `set-options` command will be
ignored
- Parameters apply only to the current release execution
- The commands can be updated by editing the comment or adding a new one
