i18n: remaining untranslated screens after #45 #47

Closed

Description

@hollabee

Follow-up to #45, now shipped in 1.37.0. Running it in German, here's
what's still English.

The translation layer covers navigation, Settings, the default Dashboard
cards, the week Calendar and the event modal. Everything below was out of
scope for that PR (and the commit body said so), but a few spots are more
visible in daily use than I expected.

Most visible first

cards/registry.tsx
This one causes the worst effect. Card titles
and config labels live here as plain strings, so a card's body renders
in German while its heading stays English. The Shopping card is the
clearest example: the 7 keys from #45 translate its contents, but it's
still headed "Shopping", and its settings show "Shopping List Entity".
Same for "To Do". One unwired file, affects every card. ~18 strings.

WeatherView.tsx is partially translated. Only 8 t() calls; the
condition descriptions and some labels are still literals. Half-German
screen. ~10 strings.

Never wired up

  • Timer.tsx (~7) and CountdownWidget.tsx (~1)
  • PhotoFrame.tsx (~4) and ScreenSaver.tsx
  • ChoresView.tsx (~15), ChoreCard.tsx (~2), Leaderboard.tsx (~1),
    StreakBadge.tsx
  • GroceryView.tsx (~2), FamilyFilter.tsx
  • MusicView.tsx (~9), NowPlayingBar.tsx (~5)
  • OnboardingView.tsx (~6)
  • CardPickerModal.tsx, CardConfigModal.tsx, and the other Advanced
    Dashboard modals

Counts are rough; grep, not a careful audit.

Suggested order

  1. registry.tsx + Timer/Countdown/PhotoFrame/ScreenSaver + finish
WeatherView. Small, and fixes the half-German cards
  2. Chores area: ChoresView, ChoreCard, Leaderboard, StreakBadge
  3. Grocery, Music, FamilyFilter
  4. Onboarding and the Advanced Dashboard modals. Rarely seen after setup,
    lowest priority

Happy to do all of these. Separate PRs per group, or one sweep; your
call, whichever is easier to review.
Same as before: I can vouch for the German, the rest are machine-generated.

Group 1 is done (merged in #48): dashboard card registry + its picker/config modals, and the rest of WeatherView, Timer, CountdownWidget, and PhotoFrame are all translated now, with real (non-placeholder) strings across all 8 non-English locales — not just English filled in everywhere else. ScreenSaver.tsx was already fully translated, no changes needed there.

Leaving Groups 2–4 (Chores area; Grocery/Music/FamilyFilter; Onboarding/Advanced Dashboard modals) as-is for now, per your own prioritization — happy to pick those up in follow-up PRs whenever you want them tackled, but didn't want to bundle a much bigger, lower-priority diff into this pass. Leaving this issue open to track that remaining work.

    Thanks! Group 1 looks great.

One thing before anyone tests it: I think #48–#51 aren't in the add-on HA actually builds. beacon/config.yaml has no image:, so HA builds from beacon/, but those PRs only touched root src/. On main, src/ and beacon/src/ now differ in 24 files (all the translation files, registry.tsx, WeatherView, Timer, photos.ts, useNotifications, App.tsx…). So 1.39.3 probably still ships the pre-#48 cards, the old photo-frame auth, and the old notification and kiosk behavior. A rsync -av --delete src/ beacon/src/ plus a patch release should fix it.

On Groups 2–4: I'm still happy to take them, starting with the Chores area, as separate PRs. Just let me know if you'd rather do them yourself so we don't duplicate work. Either way, I can check the German in #48 once it's live in the add-on.

Thanks for the quick sync + CI check! 1.39.4 looks good.

Small note: #47 got auto-closed by the "Fixes #47" in #52, but Groups 2–4 are still open. Could you reopen it, or should I open a fresh issue for the remaining screens?

Thanks for flagging this, @hollabee! The translations had landed in the standalone build but not in the Home Assistant add-on. That's fixed in v1.39.4, and we added a CI check so the add-on can't fall out of sync again. Update the add-on and the translated screens should show up. Let us know if anything still shows in English.
